‎Of Mice and Men.‎

‎New York: Covici Friede Publishers 1937. Early printing of Steinbeck's "marvelous picture of the tragedy of loneliness" Eleanor Roosevelt. Octavo original cloth blue topstain. In very good condition. Bookplate. John Steinbeck began Of Mice and Men as a children's story. "Although the finished novelette does not seem appropriate for children--that intention was obviously abandoned--the simplicity of its style and the clarity and precision of its imagery may well have been prompted by this original purpose. " Benson 326. The result is "a sophisticated and artful rendering of the basic conflict between two worlds: between an idealized landscape and the real world with its pain and anguish" Literary History of the American West. "A thriller a gripping tale . . . that you will not set down until it is finished. Steinbeck has touched the quick" The New York Times. Covici Friede Publishers hardcover books‎

‎Original John Steinbeck Engraved Calling Card Accompanying a John Steinbeck Text Full Page Newspaper Clipping Given to Jack Valenti‎

‎New York 1966. Original John Steinbeck engraved printed calling card 2 1/4 by 1 3/4 inches in very good condition with evidence of a former paperclip. This card was attached to a full page clipping which prints a John Steinbeck letter from the April 30 1966 issue of Newsday which Steinbeck sent to his friend Jack Valenti. The page clipping has tears and is fragile. The Steinbeck letter text deals with his opinions on assorted aspects of America. Accompanied by a COA from the Jack Valenti estate. Jack Valenti 1921-2007 is best known in his role as President of the Motion Picture Association of America. During his 38 year position in the MPAA Valenti created the MPAA film rating system which is still used today. Previously he had been a right hand man to President Lyndon Johnson. In 1963 Valenti was in the John F. Kennedy motorcade in Dallas and he is seen in the famous photograph of Lyndon Johnson being sworn in as President on Air Force One. Valenti flew back to Washington with Johnson and literally lived in the White House for two months helping Johnson take the reins of the presidency. Hollywood mogul and Democratic fundraiser Lew Wasserman pressured Lyndon Johnson to let Valenti leave in 1966 to run the MPAA. A striking and articulate man who easily made friends Valenti became a figure of considerable influence in both Hollywood and Washington. Few people have known as many famous and powerful people as Valenti. unknown books‎

‎Original Poster for the Bantam Books Paperback / Movie Tie-In Edition for: THE PEARL‎

‎New York: Bantam Books 1948. Vintage poster approximately 28" x 22". A bit of minor discoloration at top right corner some unfortunate tape to verso to remedy an 8" tear from the bottom edge and a 2½" tear at upper right corner. Just good but the colors bright and fresh. An uncommon promotional poster for the first Bantam Books paperback edition issued to coincide with the release of the motion picture directed by Emilio Fernández and starring Pedro Armendariz and Maria Elena Marques. The poster reproduces the front wrapper of the paperback against a background of images of Armendariz and Marques from the film. The potential proper remedies for rendering this poster archivally and aesthetically pleasing are varied and we will leave the specific path to pursue a personal decision for the buyer. ‎Original Publisher’s Advertising Poster for The Grapes of Wrath‎

‎New York: Viking Press 1939. Original advertising poster issued by the Viking Press as for display in bookstores to promote the original publication of The Grapes of Wrath. The poster’s lettering announces “John Steinbeck's New Novelâ€. Illustrated with a reproduction of the now classic original dust jacket art by Elmer Hader 12-1/4 x 18-1/4 inches a much larger form than that of the issued jacket image. Overall 22 x 18-1/4 inches. Some very unobtrusive light spotting; minor use at edges with a slight bump to the lower left corner; but unfaded and unchipped. Would be most attractive framed. An excellent literary poster which was rarely preserved. Viking Press unknown books‎

‎Pian della Tortilla. Romanzo. Traduziane de Elio Vittorini‎

‎Firenze: Valentino Bompiani 1943. Paperback. 239p. wartime printing the Milano issue a year earlier softbound in 8x4.5 decorated wraps and a color-decorated dust jacket. Not a bad copy but quite acidic and toned with outermost leaves fragile find tiny marginal tears to early and terminal pages. Cover of book itself is also very toned and a tad fragile. The dj was printed on better paperstock there's a little foxing along joint-folds serious top-edge wear with small chips to the head recto dust-soil but colors are fast and no damage to flap-texts. All things considered like WW Two a good copy. One wonders did Vittorini do the translation while in prison he'd published an anti-fascist novel in 1941 that put him behind bars. I stared at the black print with hatred and then gradually the pages opened and let me in. The magic happened.I think my sense of right and wrong my feelings of noblesse oblige and any thought I may have against the oppressor and for the oppressed came from this secret book".
