Overall a superb example.<br /> <br /> Originally published in 1929 Cup of Gold was Steinbeck's first book - a romantic and imaginative re-creation of the life of the Welsh privateer Sir Henry Morgan. Though quite different in tone from the social realism that would later define his reputation the novel reveals early evidence of Steinbeck's narrative power and his fascination with myth ambition and the human condition.<br /> <br /> This 1936 Covici Friede issue represents the first reappearance of the work following Steinbeck's growing success in the mid-1930s. The edition is bibliographically significant: it utilizes unsold sheets of the original 1929 Robert M. McBride edition newly issued with a Covici Friede title-page and binding. In effect Covici Friede acquired the remaining McBride stock and reissued it under their own imprint. When these sheets were exhausted later printings were produced independently by Covici Friede typically in blue cloth.<br /> <br /> As such this edition occupies an important transitional position between the exceedingly rare McBride first issue and the later more common reprints. Goldstone and Payne call this the "first edition second issue" but is more properly simply the second edition. This maroon cloth issue retains the McBride bell logo on the final page which seemed to indicate these were first issue sheets reissued with a new title page and cover. Covici Friede however made up new sheets for this edition. This book comes with a later 1938 Sun Dial dust jacket which is decidedly original to this book. Jacket has some chipping at spine head and rear corner and also soiled on rear panel. Sun Dial apparently bought out remaining stock when Covici Friede went bankrupt in 1938 and then sold them with their own dust jackets. Sun Dial later went on to release other later reprints of this book. <br/> <br/> Covici Friede / Sun Dial Press hardcover

Despite these flaws a bright and entirely original copy of a book infrequently found in collector's condition. First edition first issue of the author's first book. vi 269 3 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. FIRST EDITION of the future Nobel laureate's elusive first book published when he was 27 years old. One of 1537 copies the publisher printed 2476 copies 939 of which were remaindered as unbound sheets. Morgan was obsessive. He had two driving ambitions: to possess the beautiful woman called La Santa Roja and to conquer Panama the "cup of gold." <p>New York: Covici Friede 1936. 2nd Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. The second printing of the Covici Friede edition in blue cloth with gilt titles and decorations. Front panel of dust jacket states that Steinbeck is the author of "Of Mice and Men" and no publisher's imprint on the spine. Near-fine with a touch of offsetting to endpapers otherwise clean and tight. In a very good dust jacket with slight rubbing to the spine ends and corners and a bit of staining to the top edge more noticeable on the reverse. CUP OF GOLD Mcbride 1929 first edition spine and upper 2cm of front panel lightened some off-setting to the front cover else a tight vg or better copy in just about vg second printing dust-wrapper with some wear and tear mostly to the dust-wrapper spine extremities. Actually a very nice copy of this the second issue of the first edition sheets of the authors first book bound in maroon cloth with the McBride colophon on the last page of text and released here in 1936. Not to be confused with the very common 2ND EDITION NOT second issue published by Covici Friede in blue cloth without the McBride colophon on the last page of text. McBride / Covici Friede hardcover

CUP OF GOLD Mcbride 1929 first printing of the Covici Friede binding in burgundy cloth edges of spine extremities and edge of front cover lightened else just about fine in vg/near fine first state of Covici Friede dust-wrapper with the publishers name blocked out and then reprinted and spelled correctly on the dust-wrapper spine and WITHOUT mention of OF MICE AND MEN on the front dust-wrapper panel which was duh published a year later in 1937 making any who list this title which has this work printed on the front dust-wrapper panel and then adjudicating it as the correct first state dust-wrapper a most dubious scholar and with a small chip missing from the head of the dust-wrapper spine slight fraying to the base of the dust-wrapper spine and some light dust-soil to the rear dust-wrapper panel. Actually a very nice copy of this the second issue of the first edition sheets of the authors first book bound in maroon cloth with the McBride colophon on the last page of text and released here in 1936.
