The Grapes of Wrath
New York: The Viking Press 1939 First edition first printing; in the original first issue dust jacket with the original $2.75 price and "First Edition" to corner of front flap. Publisher's beige cloth boards illustrated with an image of migrant families heading West after Elmer Hader's dust jacket design pictorial endpapers illustrated with sheet music for the "The Battle Hymn the Republic"; in its original dust jacket with an illustration by Hader depicting tenant farming families looking out on a caravan of migrant families heading West across a valley towards a mountain range. Very good book with light toning to spine a touch of soiling to top right of front board some spotting to top- and fore edge small bookshop label to front pastedown some offsetting to endpapers and trace of bookplate removal to verso of front free endpaper; very good unclipped dust jacket with light toning to spine some very shallow chipping to spine ends a few nicks and small closed tears here and there 1.5 inch closed tear to foot of spine and some creasing to bottom edge of rear panel. Overall a sturdy and attractive copy of this iconic work of 20th century literature. In this powerful and compelling novel Steinbeck tells the story of a poor "Okie" family who travels westward to California after their home state of Oklahoma is decimated by the Dust Bowl in the 1930's. Steinbeck's keen sense of human emotion and humanitarian interest in the plight of the tenant farmer make this novel a classic and timeless masterpiece that provides a unique insight into the history of the American Midwest. Symbolizing the novel's motifs of sacrifice and the American dream The Grapes of Wrath takes its title from Julia Ward Howe's "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" whose lyrics reference the Biblical apocalypse and divine deliverance from oppression. The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award in 1939 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1940. It was also considered a major contributing factor in Steinbeck's 1962 awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. Very light soiling to textblock edges else Fine. Binding very square and tight; spines never opened. Housed in the original brown paper-covered slipcase moderately chipped and worn.<br /> <br /> <p>A beautiful unread set made with great care. Two publisher's slips laid in explain that the book's binding was designed to inspire "emotional sympathy" in the reader before he had even cracked it open:<br /> <br /> <p>"The 'grass cloth' should if the intention of the designer is realized put the prospective reader in mind of of the parched sun-baked grass of the Dust Bowl. Silver is used for the stamping rather than gold because this is a novel about people in 'the silver country.' And rawhide was planned for the backs of the volumes because it is a leather which might very well have come from an Oklahoman steer."<br /> <br /> <p>The book's contents are enhanced with duotone lithographs by Thomas Hart Benton a painter and muralist in the vanguard of the Regionalist art movement. Benton was also commissioned to create lithographs to help promote the critically acclaimed film adaption that appeared the same year; his style of populist realism was acknowledged to be a perfect match for Steinbeck's. STEINBECK, John
The Grapes of Wrath.
New York: The Viking Press 1939. The fields were fruitful and starving men moved on the roads First edition of the author's masterpiece widely regarded as the supreme literary achievement of the Depression era. The film adaptation by Darryl F. Zanuck produced the following year is similarly one of the greatest 20th-century American films. "Lauded by critics nationwide for its scope and intensity the book attracted an equally vociferous minority opinion" with some debating Steinback's use of supposedly crass language and his unwavering sympathy for the disenfranchised ANB. It was consequently banned in several counties until well into the Second World War. The jacket design is by the children's writer and illustrator Elmer Hader 1889-1973 the joint recipient alongside his wife Berta of the 1948 Caldecott medal. Steinbeck was so taken with the illustrations in their book Billy Butter 1936 that he specially requested Elmer design the jacket for The Grapes of Wrath. Elmer later designed the jackets of East of Eden 1952 and The Winter of Our Discontent 1961. Octavo. Original buff cloth spine lettered in brown pictorial design in brown wrapped around spine and covers endpapers printed with sheet music for "Battle Hymn of the Republic" top edge yellow.
With dust jacket. Housed in custom green cloth slipcase and chemise. Tiny spots to bottom edge; jacket unclipped spine toned and creased at head minor rubbing to extremities: a fine copy in very good jacket. Goldstone & Payne A12a. hardcover
