‎[RADICAL & PROLETARIAN LITERATURE] STEINBECK, John‎

‎John Steinbeck Replies‎

‎New York: L.M. Birkhead Friends of Democracy 1940. First Edition. 12mo bifolium 19.5cm.; faint uneven toning to upper panel else Near Fine. Small leaflet reproducing the correspondence between Birkhead Director of the Friends of Democracy and John Steinbeck in regards to the latter's 1939 novel "The Grapes of Wrath." The first letter from Birkhead is originally dated May 2 1940 and opens "I hope that you will not think I am impertinent but our organization has had put up to it the problem of your nationality. You may consider that it is none of our business nor the business of anyone else in the country. However there is a very widespread propaganda particularly among the extreme reactionary religionists of the country that you are Jewish and that 'Grapes of Wrath' is Jewish propaganda." Steinbeck's response is dated Los Gatos California May 7 1940 and begins "I am answering your letter with a good deal of sadness." Steinbeck goes on to describe in detail his heritage noting that his paternal grandfather was a German farmer many of whose relations still reside "on a fairly large farm near Dusseldorf." On his mother's side "my blood is all north Irish my grandfather whose name was Hamilton having come from Mulkeraugh near Londonderry." Steinbeck concludes "I can prove these things of course--but when I shall have to--the American democracy will have disappeared." In a postscript Steinbeck remarks "On both sides and for many generations we are blond and blue eyed to a degree to arouse the admiration and perhaps envy of the dark complexioned Hitler." The correspondence was reprinted later that year under the title "A Letter in Reply to a Request for a Statement" in a limited edition of 350 copies by the Overbrook Press in Stamford Connecticut. GOLDSTONE & PAYNE A13a. L.M. Birkhead, Friends of Democracy unknown‎

‎[STEINBECK, JOHN]. Beecher, William Ward, Photographer‎

‎Original photographic silver print portrait of John Steinbeck‎

‎N.p. n.d. but circa 1960 1960. Hinged on the verso of a board and matted which should probably be replaced. Original wooden frame preserved but chipped and worn. 27 x 20 cm signed on the verso in pencil by the photographer William Ward Beecher. A photographic portrait of John Steinbeck taken by artist William Ward Beecher 1921-2006 a descendant of the famous New England Beechers. How many portraits were produced from this one sitting is not recorded but there were at least two: this one and a similar one that was used in 1961 on the rear panel of the dust jacket of Winter of Our Discontent. This one which apparently was not published was the personal property of John and Elaine Steinbeck and was sold as part of the remains of their estate in February 2020. Betty and William Ward Beecher and the Steinbecks were apparently friends. The Beechers had books inscribed to them by John Steinbeck and the Steinbecks owned a few of Beecher's lithographs and paintings. N.p., n.d. [but circa 1960] unknown‎

This is one of only 380 copies issued and is signed by the author. ‎The Wayward Bus 1947 First Edition First Printing First Issue Dust Jacket‎

‎New York: Viking Press 1947. First Edition First Printing. Good/Good.
A Mid-Century Study in Human Desperation. John Steinbeck's 1947 novel explores the internal lives of a group of travelers stranded on a backroad bus in post-war California.

While critics at the time were divided the public embraced it making it one of Steinbeck's most immediate financial successes. This copy features the First Issue dust jacket and represents a key moment in Steinbeck's transition into the late 1940s. It was later adapted into the 1957 film starring Jayne Mansfield and Joan Collins.

KEY FEATURES
Bibliographic Point: First Edition First Printing Viking Press 1947.
The Jacket: First Issue dust jacket with the book title correctly positioned at the top of the front flap.
Hollywood Connection: The basis for the 1957 film; a high-water mark for mid-century melodrama staring Jayne Mansfield / Joan Collins/Dan Dailey and Rick Jason.
Reference: Cited in Zempel 218 and Allen 624; Hayashi: 4; Railsback: 419; Firsts:17:1

CONDITION: Good / Good
The Book: Bindings are tight and square. The text is clean with light even age-toning throughout. Minimal handling wear with minor rubbing to the bottom edges.
The Jacket: First issue state $2.75 price intact. Housed in a new clear protective Mylar sleeve. The jacket shows age-toning and significant loss at the spine tips and top corners. Despite the losses the front panel remains vibrant and the critical first-issue flap points are clearly legible. The novel is about a group of people on a bus traveling California's back road it is unclear whether the characters are traveling toward a hopeful destination or merely fleeing something. Although considered one of Steinbeck's weaker novels at the time of its original publication The Wayward Bus was financially more successful than any of his previous works.

A black-and-white film version of The Wayward Bus was released in 1957 with a cast including Jayne Mansfield Joan Collins Dan Dailey and Rick Jason. Much of the dramatic action in Steinbeck's novel consists of internal monologues which the film version does not render. The movie was released in May 1957 at the height of Mansfield's popularity and enjoyed some box office success despite middling reviews. wiki Viking Press unknown‎

‎New York: Martin Beck Theatre1942. Gouache in 8 colors on board.'22 x 14 inches "Free men cannot start a war but once it is started they can fight on in defeat. Herd men followers of a leader cannot do that and so it is always the herd men who win battles and the free men who win wars.â€â€• John Steinbeck The Moon Is Down. The Moon is Down was John Steinbeck's second attempt at writing a novel in play form Of Mice and Men was his first. It was composed while on assignment from the Foreign Information Service a division of the Office of Strategic Services charged with combating Nazi propaganda. His original story depicting a small American town invaded by enemy troops was rejected by the FIS who feared that it might demoralize the civilian public. In his revised manuscript published by Viking in 1942 Steinbeck kept the same plot but set it in an unnamed Scandinavian town rather than the United States. Despite mixed critical reception the book was a remarkable public success outselling The Grapes of Wrath two-to-one in pre-publication; it would eventually pass through 76 editions. Shortly after publication the producer Oscar Serlin purchased the dramatic rights to The Moon is Down Herman Shumlin initially bought them but passed them on saying he “did not care for The Moon is Down’s politics.†Serlin known for his production of “Life with Father†accepted the challenge believing Steinbeck’s play would attract a large audience. “The Moon is Down†premiered on Broadway in April 1942 starring Otto Kruger as Colonel Lanser and Ralph Morgan as Mayor Orden. Like the novel before it the play was publicly adored but critically lambasted. Life magazine reported that it was “trumpeted louder than any literary event of the season†while the critical consensus was that “Steinbeck was too easy on the Germans too optimistic about the ultimate victory of the Allies and ultimately too moralistic." Despite its initial Broadway run lasting only nine weeks the play was immensely successful on the road and abroad especially in London and Stockholm. Rather surprisingly it was nominated for Best Play by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle and placed second.Provenance: From the estate of producer Oscar Serlin.
