Rob van Gennep (1937-1994) leidde een van de meest geruchtmakende uitgeverijen die Nederland in de twintigste eeuw gekend heeft: een 'zeeroversuitgeverij' volgens de Zuid-Afrikaanse dichter Breyten Breytenbach. De teneur van het fonds was zonder meer links te noemen, maar toch zeker niet louter politiek. Want juist dankzij literaire trouvailles, zoals Gyorgy Konrad en Breyten Breytenbach, is Uitgeverij Van Gennep overeind gebleven en kan in 2009 het veertigjarig jubileum worden gevierd. In Zeerovers. Uitgeverij en Boekhandel Van Gennep besteden diverse auteurs aandacht aan de opmerkelijke en soms hilarische geschiedenis van deze firma. Onderwerp van deze bundel zijn de politiek getinte affiches in het fonds, de seksboekjes die met de NVSH werden uitgebracht, ja zelfs de boeken die Rob van Gennep prive kocht en las. Een fondslijst maakt het beeld compleet. Zeerovers is rijk geillustreerd en zal menig kind van de jaren zestig met weemoed vervullen. Translated from the French, by C. Hullmandel.
Third Edition, corrected, xix,117,[3]pp., 2 fold-out lithographed plates, the first containing twelve figures of tools and implements, the second nine figures of printing presses and parts, both plates are lightly water-marked affecting the image, & with 1" marginal tear to vertical fold of each, final leaf includes publisher's advertisements for two additional titles by Hullmandel; front & back endpapers soiled, with early owner's signature (L. Stilson) & date on front pastedown, final two blank leaves bit stained, half calf with early marbled paper over boards, red leather label (3x2") with gilt border & title, "A Manual of Lithography", & the name "L. Stilson" added to front board; spine worn & rubbed with 1-1/4" piece missing at head & small label with black "C" at foot; 3" split in front joint; corners, edges & joints worn, paper boards chipped, edges of cover label chipped. Hullmandel's best know work and most influential publication is his book 'The art of drawing on stone' which was first published in 1824. But in terms of establishing lithography in Britain, his translation from the French of this treatise by Raucourt de Charleville was probably just as important. This third and final edition contains some important new additions. Colonel Antoine Raucourt was chief engineer at the Ecole des Ponts et Chauss?es in Paris and ran its in-plant lithographic press. His book was originally published in Toulon in 1819. Hullmandel thought highly of Raucourt's treatise and wrote in the preface: "The books which have hitherto been published on lithography are very imperfect, and are much more adapted to persons who already understand the art than those who wish to learn it... I have repeatedly wished for a guide to explain the new accidents which occur every instant, and which... appear each time so new and intricate, that the beginner is consequently tempted to give up all hopes of ever succeeding. I am consequently better enabled to appreciate the value of this excellent treatise on lithography, and hesitate not an instant to pronounce it the best work which has ever been published on the art." Het idee dat oorlogvoering niet alleen een praktisch vak is, maar ook een goede theoretische onderbouwing nodig heeft, ontstond al aan het eind van de vijftiende eeuw. Daarbij speelde de boekdrukkunst als nieuw communicatiemiddel een cruciale rol, want juist via het gedrukte woord konden kennis en informatie op krijgskundig gebied gemakkelijk en breed worden verspreid. Aan dit aspect is tot nu toe nauwelijks aandacht besteed en er bestaat van geen enkel land een algemene studie over militaire boekcultuur. Gewapend met kennis presenteert een eerste overzicht van de rijke Nederlandse militaire boekcultuur: van de eerste militaire vakbibliotheek, in 1600 ontstaan aan de Leidse universiteit, tot de eerste druk van het bekende Handboek voor de soldaat uit 1933. De eerste werken werden gedrukt door Christoffel Plantijn in Antwerpen, maar al snel werden Den Haag en Amsterdam het centrum van de Nederlandse militaire publicistiek. Tot in de achttiende eeuw was de Nederlandse Republiek zelfs internationaal een belangrijke producent van militaire literatuur. De auteur had voor zijn onderzoek toegang tot het omvangrijke en unieke historisch boekbezit aanwezig in het cultureel erfgoed van Defensie. Gewapend met kennis bevat een schat aan materiaal voor onderzoekers, geinteresseerden en erfgoedinstellingen, en geeft de militair een ander gezicht.

Hardback, VI+347 p., 138 b/w ill. + 112 colour ill., 190 x 250 mm. ISBN 9782503521930. Jean Poyer ist ein aus Quellen uberlieferter Buchmaler aus Tours, der am Ausgang des 15. Jahrhunderts fur die franzosische Konigin Anne de Bretagne tatig war. Hochstes Lob erfuhr der Kunstler in der zeitgenossischen franzosischen Kunstliteratur, wo er in einem Zug mit Jean Fouquet, Jan van Eyck, Albrecht Durer oder Michelangelo genannt wird. Dennoch geriet er in Vergessenheit, und kein einziges heute bekanntes Werk kann sicher mit Poyer verbunden werden. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entdeckte die kunstgeschichtliche Forschung den Kunstler neu, dabei schrieb man seinen Namen durch einen Transkriptionsfehler Poyet ? ein Irrtum, den das vorliegende Buch nach den Quellen korrigiert. Wenig uberzeugend oder unzureichend wurde der Name immer wieder fur verschiedene Einzelwerke in Anspruch genommen. Zu Beginn der 1980er Jahre machte die stilkritische Forschung das neu definierte Oeuvre eines Touroner Malers von ausserordentlich hoher Qualitat bekannt und brachte den hochgeruhmten Jean Poyer wieder ins Spiel. Allerdings blieb der Identifikationsvorschlag umstritten, da Poyer fur das letzte Drittel des 15. Jahrhunderts belegt ist, wahrend einzelne fur ihn in Anspruch genommene Werke uber seinen angenommenen Tod hinaus im fruhen 16. Jahrhundert entstanden scheinen. Erst jungste Erkenntnisse lassen Poyer als einen Kunstler hervortreten, der bereits um die Jahrhundertwende revolutionare Neuerungen in die franzosische Malerei einfuhrte. Poyers Oeuvre, das Handschriften, Tafelgemalde, Zeichnungen sowie nach stilverwandten Entwurfen ausgefuhrte Glasfenster umfasst und dessen Kompositionen ebenfalls in die Pariser Druckgraphik Eingang fanden, erfahrt hier erstmals zusammenhangende Betrachtung.
