‎ORWELL George.‎

‎Inside the Whale‎

‎London: Victor Gollancz Ltd 1940. An exceptionally nice copy retained by the publisher Octavo. Original black cloth titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a quarter morocco green solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Publisher's file copy with their inkstamp to the half-title and pencilled mark to front free endpaper and front panel of the jacket. Very mild spotting to boards an exceptionally nice copy in the nicked little tanned and lightly rubbed dust jacket. First edition first impression one of 1000 copies printed. The publisher's retained copy with their rubber stamp to the half title leaf. Orwell may well have been the finest essayist England produced in the entire century. Despite his radical credo in his essays he remains the last of the great Victorian prose stylists. Besides the title essay this book prints his notable studies of Charles Dickens and boy's weeklies. A scarce book in any condition - copies as nice as this are rare. Provenance: from the publisher's archive of Victor Gollancz 1893-1967 one of the revolutionary figures of 20th-century publishing. Everything about Gollancz was distinctive from his business practices - he flouted convention backed newcomers extravagantly and held unique sway over the Book Society choices - to the appearance of his books. The famous yellow jackets a collaborative design between Gollancz himself and the typographer Stanley Morison bristle with blurbs recommendations and reviews in black and magenta. Prior to its acquisition by Peter Harrington the archive was shelved together from first publication though occasionally moved from warehouse to warehouse over the decades. The copies were retained by Gollancz as "archive" or "file" copies and most are stamped in ink with rubber stamps usually on the front panel of the dust jacket the front free endpaper and the title page. ‎Inside The Whale - in the original dust wrapper‎

‎Gollancz 1940. Hardcover. Very Good. A first edition first printing published by Gollancz in 1940. Some light spotting to end papers. Some foxing to edges which are a little dusty. Very slight wear to head and tail of spine. Cloth dull with a few blemishes. The unclipped dust wrapper priced 7/6 net on the spine dust marked with some creasing and rubbing. Spine of dust wrapper tanned. Some ink marks to rear. One crease to the spine and to the top of the front panel. Initially a review of 'Tropic of Cancer' by Henry Miller Orwell moves on to discuss Charles Dickens and 1920s to 1930s literature. The biblical story of Jonah and the whale is used as a metaphor for accepting experience without seeking to change it Jonah inside the whale being comfortably protected from the problems of the outside world. A very rare Orwell title with no US equivalent edition. Gollancz published 1000 copies were published of which 'several copies were destroyed in an air raid.' cf. Fenwick G. 1998. Copies in dust wrappers are exceptionally scarce. Gollancz hardcover‎

‎JAMES BURNHAM AND THE MANAGERIAL REVOLUTION wrapper title‎

‎Berkeley: Berkeley Young Socialist League 1955. 215 leaves. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript printed on rectos only. Stapled at left with mimeographed upper wrapper. Old folds from mailing lacks lower wrapper which included YSL info and adverts a bit of sunning else very good. A possible candidate for being the first separate US printing of Orwell's essay first published in POLEMIC May 1946 then published separately in the UK the same year by the Socialist Book Centre and eventually collected in SHOOTING AN ELEPHANT both UK and US 1950. The 1 1/3 page "Publisher's Remarks" by James Robertson is dated 29 January 1955 and curiously remarks about the lack of availability of the essay in the US. The YSL was one of the most visible and influential of the leftist campus groups of the 1950s and evolved as an offshoot of Max Shachtman's Workers Party. Robertson's "Prefatory remarks" reflect the YSL's Trotskyite affiliation by taking issue with Orwell's "slight acquaintance" with Trotsky's writings. OCLC/Worldcat locates a single copy at Brown. Not In Fenwick and even if wanting in chronological priority and perhaps even wanting in authorization by Orwell's estate of significant bibliographic and contextual interest. OCLC: 54827397. Illustrated in colours. First Danish edition of one of the most important literary works of the 20th century the satirical-political masterpiece that so magnificently reflects the events leading up to the Russian Revolution and brilliantly caricatures Stalinism. As Orwell himself put it with this work he deliberately tried "to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole". Orwell "Why I Write". <br><br>"Animal Farm" brilliantly portrays not only the corruption of the revolution but also how traits of human character themselves corrupt society. The greatest flaw of revolution is not the corrupt leadership on its own but also the greed indifference ignorance shortsightedness wickedness etc. that govern the individuals that make up the masses. <br><br>The work was written between late 1943 and early 1944 when the wartime alliance with the Soviet Union was at its height and Stalin was held in highest esteem in Britain among both the people and intelligentsia. Not surprisingly it was initially rejected by both British and American publishers and the publication of it was thus delayed. When it did appear 1945 it became a great commercial success however probably not least due to the soon to follow Cold War. <br><br>The work is generally considered one of the best and most influential literary productions of the 20th century. unknown‎

‎ORWELL George.‎

‎Keep the Aspidistra Flying.‎

‎London: Victor Gollancz Ltd 1936. An exceptional association copy inscribed by Orwell to Anthony Powell Octavo. Original blue cloth titles to spine in blue. A very good copy light soiling with a little wear to the spine ends and rear joint and the faint remains of a Boots label to the front cover. First edition first impression. Signed by the author for fellow novelist Anthony Powell "Geo. Orwell" on the front endpaper with Powell's bookplate to the front pastedown. The first edition consisted of 3000 sets of sheets of which only 2500 were bound. Of these more than 200 were destroyed during the war. The book which "would eventually produce one of his Orwell's most substantial adult friendships" Taylor - Orwell The Life. Powell recalls buying this book and the friendship with Orwell which followed in the first volume of his autobiography Infants of the Spring 1976. "When Down and Out in Paris and London appeared in 1933 someone recommended it. I read the book and was impressed by its savagery and gloom. At the same time I cannot claim to have immediately marked down Orwell as a writer of whom one would obviously hear more. However a year or two later when I saw a copy of Keep the Aspidistra Flying in a secondhand bookshop I bought it. Again I liked the novel for its violent feelings and presentation of a young man at the end of his tether rather than for its form or style which seemed strangely old fashioned in treatment. I spoke of the book dining with Cyril Connolly. Connolly then told me Orwell was one of his oldest friends. He urged me to write a fan letter. This I did thereby making my first Orwell contact in 1936" Powell included a copy of his recently self published Caledonia and received a friendly if hesitant reply from Orwell. It was not until some five years later that they met in person whereafter they would meet and correspond regularly for the remainder of Orwell's life. An exceptional association copy. George Orwell was a parsimonious signer of his books and signed copies of his early novels especially are uncommon. London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, hardcover‎
