A first edition thus published under the editorship and translator William Tooke. A New Edition of this dictionary but a first edition thus overall. The General Biographical Dictionary was first published in 1761 in eleven volumes with a supplement released in 1767. Tooke notes to the preface that 'though the work is apparently extended only by the addition of three volumes the actual augmentation is much greater'. Collated complete. A comprehensive study due to Tooke's capability to translate German French and Russian. Tooke was assisted in this work by William Beloe and Robert Nares. Tooke was a regular contributor to the Monthly Review and the Gentleman's Magazine. With entries on numerous important people including George Abbot Abraham Cowley William Cowper William Dampier Isaac Newton Nicholas Rowe Palladius Wiliam Shakespeare and Tobias Smollett. In a uniform half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally generally smart. Some rubbing to the spines and boards. Small loss to the head and tail of spines. Internally firmly bound. Dublin: Browne & Nolan 1968. Map. Offset lithograph. 18" x 23 1/2".<br/><br/> This brightly colored tourist map of the city of Dublin folds out of a pamphlet. A colorful border shows 25 important buildings and landmarks including Trinity College St. Audoen's Arch and the National Gallery as well as the dates they were established. The map itself has illustrations of different historical scenes at the locations they took place with explanatory notes. Interesting facts are noted as well for example an arrow pointing to where W.B. Yeats went to school and the hill where according to legend St. Patrick foretold the rise of Dublin City from a small village. A simple cartouche in the bottom left includes the coat of arms of the City of Dublin. Included with pamphlet cover some stains otherwise good condition. The Foreword notes that the original edition published in 1536 is of great rarity and that the attribution of authorship to Sir John Cheke is "hardly well founded". Number 32 of a limited edition of 100 copies printed at the Chiswick Press. The short-lived Golden Hours Press was established by Christopher Sandford who in the same year as this volume was published took over the Golden Cockerel Press and the Golden Hours Press was then abandoned; its other publication was a three-volume edition of the works of Christopher Marlowe. Original brown morocco blind stamped to upper board and spine a little darkened at top of front board top edge gilt remainder untrimmed; 60 pages on watermarked paper including facsimile of the original title-page within woodcut bordercontents clean and crisp.
