Disbound from volume of pamphlets uncut and stitched with old stitch-marks on inner margin the first and last pages dusty and a small hole in the paper of the lower margin of the title not affecting text a few corners and the fore-margins of the first few leaves creased and dusty but mostly clean. FOR EXAMPLE : If one mouse can draw one ounce and a half how many mice can draw 50000 tons Answer in half a minute : 1194666666. COPAC/JISC gives copies at the BL and Bodleian for this imprint. It was also printed by Pollard in Exeter in the same year and in Bristol by Bryan in 1850. George Parker Bidder 1806-1878 was born in Moretonhampstead Devon became famous nationally as a boy prodigy at mental arithmetic was exhibited at fairgrounds and 'freak shows' by his father and rescued from that life by Sir John Herschel eventually sent to study mathematics at Edinburgh University and then entered the Civil Engineering profession just at the time when his skills were valuable in the enormous development of the railway system and the docks. He prospered and helped his Devon relatives to prosper bought property at Dartmouth and eventually retired there. He was an influential figure in the development of railway systems in Norway Denmark Belgium and India. A full account of his varied life in engineering was given in the biography "The Calculating Boy" by his great-great-grandson E.F. Clark MA MIMechE. R. Bond & Co. Exeter. [1821]. 12mo. unknown

A Specimen of Arbitrary Power; in a Speech Made by the Grand Seignior to his Janizaries
London: W Pepper 1731. First edition. Disbound. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". None. An extremely scarce political pamphlet from 1731 written anonymously and regarded as attacking the Prime Minister Robert Walpole. The first and only edition of this work. Written anonymously and purtporting to be a speech given by 'The Grand Seignior to his Janizaries'. This work uses many forms of rhetoric to discuss war and the role of a 'Sovereign Judge' in a satirical manner. Walpole's own foreign policy was to avoid wars so that he could lower taxes. With a frontispiece of a Turkish infantryman. Walpole was the first British Prime Minister and held the position for twenty years. This pamphlet was published in 1731 and has been regarded by critics to be an attack on Walpole with the ESTC notes on this work support this view. Walpole had many enemies who were prominent in the literary scene such as John Gay Jonathan Swift Alexander Pope Henry Fielding and Samuel Johnson. With only one entry of this work in the ESTC. no. T106325. Pamphlets became a powerful source of strife in the seventeenth and eighteenth century with dozens being published about each any every political moral or social situation. They were often printed anonymously providing a sense of protecting for the person writing it. Disbound without both boards but with evidence of having been previously bound. Externally generally smart. Light bumping to the extremities. Small contemporary ink inscription to the head of first page. Internally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to the edges. Blind stamp to the title page. Chip to the head of pages five and nine not affecting text. Otherwise just the odd spot. Very Good W Pepper unknown

The fictional prose is set around Christmas time as inferred from the title. The frontispiece is titled 'Christmas in the Olden Time'. Very scarce - only held in four locations worldwide institutionally. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD 1906-1973 a noted book collector and diarist. In a full cloth binding with gilt stamping to the front board and spine. Externally generally smart with bumping to the head and tail of spine as well as the extremities. Small ink spills to the front board. Cloth has aged. Walter Flinn bookplate to front pastedown. Later spotted full calf blind double fillets to boards titles gilt to spine all edges speckled red. An early English account of Morocco by an anonymous pamphleteer sometimes called 'Robert Cottingham'. This volume gives an account of the privateer and adventurer Sir Anthony Sherley's 1565-1636 ambassadorships from Rudolf II Holy Roman Emperor to Mowlai Abd-el-Aziz son of Ahmed II Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. These accounts were made famous in Samuel Purchas's influential 'Purchas his Pilgrimmes' 1614 which is a rather more robust volume. Sherley was a remarkably well travelled Elizabethan gentleman beginning his career as a captain in Robert Dudley's forces before becoming a knight of Henri IV and then launching military expeditions to West Africa Sao Tome and Jamaica. Sherley journeyed to Persia where he became the representative of the Shah in Moscow Prague and Rome. Effectively exiled from his own country Sherley went to Prague where he became emissary of the Holy Roman Emperor to Morocco. He would later became an admiral of the Spanish fleet in the Levant. He died in 1635 penniless and obscure. This pamphlet presents Sherley's experiences in Morocco as well as accounts from other travellers like him as it would have appeared to the English reading public for the first time. Slight nicks to boards joints beginning to crack. First and final leaves a little soiled and small contemporary ink numeral to title-page. Modest paper repair to margin of C4 and occasional light spots of soiling to margins only. A very good copy. Rare in commerce we can locate one copy only at auction in the last 70 years.
