Ephemeris or Leaves from ye Journall of Marian Drayton
London: Robert and George Seeleye; Seeley 1854. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 7" by 5". None. An anonymously published historical novel purporting to be the diary of a sixteenth century lady Marion Drayton. The first edition of this work. An uncommon work which is a Victorian imitation of a sixteenth century diary. The syntax and spelling loosely resembles that of the early modern era as an attempt to convince the reader they are reading a diary. Undated dated from Copac. Copac entries date the work at either 1853 or 1854. Dated from the 1854 listing of Cambridge University and the National Library of Scotland. This diary of one Marian Drayton is said to have been written from 1553-1559 and was published from the manuscript by her nephew Richard Falkenridge in 1592 as stated to the preface. A fascinating historical novel from the Victorian period. In a full tooled morocco binding. Externally smart. Rebacked with the original boards and backstrip preserved. Light rubbing to the boards. Hinges have been reinforced. Prior owners' inscriptions to the recto of front endpaper M A Wilkinson M E Milward and E M Pugh. Internally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges. Everyman. A 15th century English Morality Play. 3 large original watercolor costume designs by noted American artist Robert Perdziola born 1961 two titled signed and dated February 1983 in pencil by the artist one titled and dated but unsigned
The designs depict the characters Knowledge Angel and Confession with colored fabric swatches attached to each Executed on quality watercolor paper. Sheet size 510 x 380 mm.

Some browning. "Everyman an English morality play of the 15th century probably a version of a Dutch play Elckerlyc. It achieves a beautiful simple solemnity in treating allegorically the theme of death and the fate of the human soul-of Everyman's soul as he tries to justify his time on earth. Though morality plays on the whole failed to achieve the vigorous realism of the Middle Ages' scriptural drama this short play about 900 lines is more than an allegorical sermon because vivid characterization gives it dramatic energy. It is generally regarded as the finest of the morality plays." Britannica Online revised and updated by J.E. Luebering.

Perdziola an internationally-recognized set and costume designer for theater opera and ballet has worked extensively throughout the United States at such venues as the Metropolitan Opera San Francisco Opera Santa Fe Opera Lyric Theatre of Chicago American Ballet Theater Shakespeare Theater in Washington Boston Ballet and Miami Ballet as well as for various Broadway productions. He has also worked internationally for productions at the Monte Carlo Opera the Niedersächsische Staatsorchester in Hannover the Garsington Opera in the United Kingdom the Finnish National Ballet the Saito Kinen Festival in Japan and the Sydney Opera House. The artist has received three Helen Hayes awards and a Helpmann award; he has also been nominated for numerous additional awards. unknown
