Anon Mungo Park and Others?
Scenes of Travel and Adventure in Central Africa
London: Thomas Nelson and Sons. Fair with no dust jacket. 1851. Reprint. Hardcover. In the original publishers Light Brown cloth covered boards with blind stamped decoration to the front and rear covers but with quite bright gilt titling/decoration/illustration to the spine. All corners and the head/tail of the spine are 'bumped/rubbed with a small split to the cloth either side of the top and bottom of the spine. There is a fading Ink blotch about 1.5 cms to the bottom half of the front cover. Overall the covers are quite clean and it is an attractive little book. All edges gilt. Internally it lacks the first plain yellow free endpaper and there are No Inscriptions. The front inner hinge has sprung. The text/guttering has some grubby marks/thumbing/spotting and a centimetre round brown spot running through the blank margin from pp 45-55. Otherwise the text is clean and bright - Overall. Illustrated with a tissue guarded b/w Frontispiece and an engraved Title page with a b/w vignette. There is also a separate printed Title page. 5 other tissue guarded b/w plates. The heavier duty paper all the plates/engravings are on has browned quite heavily but mainly on the blank reverse and the blank edges - the small tissue guards have done their jobs pretty well protecting the images - but for full protection they should have been bigger! ! . 447 pp. Contents include chapters such as : - 'Progress of African Discovery'; 'The Trade between Europe and the natives of Africa'; 'Observation on the Native Tribes'; 'Privations and ill treatment of Park' Mungo Park ; 'Oppression and cruelty of the Moors'; 'Occurences during the Author's confinement at Benowm'; 'Discovery of the Niger'; 'Kindness of the Mansa of Sibidooloo'; 'Observations on Slavery in Africa'; 'The Trade in Gold dust and Ivory'; 'Travels of Horneman Nicholls Roentgen and Adams'; 'Laing & Caillie'; etc etc. Probably some sort of reprint/pirate edition of Mungo Park's 'Travels in the interior districts of Africa'. Attributed to Mungo Park cf OCLC. but with additions and other African Travels added in . Overall the book is a little better than it sounds - it is generally clean and an attractive little copy - but with some faults as noted above. See Images. ; 24mo 5" - 6" tall . ANON NATURAL DISASTERS SOUTH AMERICA
A Wonderful Account of Two Faithful Lovers Who Were United by the Fury of a Most Terrible Earthquake - From Authentic History. Cornelia Perez a Native of S. America. Juann Mendoza a Native of Old Spain.
N.p. n.d. ca 1826. Narrative poem of forty-two four-line stanzas arranged in two columns within typographical borders. The narrative incorporates the real-world events of the Lima-Callao Earthquake of 1746 and tells the tale of a pair of lovers who after being separated in love by her cruel father are providentially reunited following the devastation of the earthquake. Her father having perished in the disaster the lovers sail away to Spain with the moral: "The Earth and Elements themselves / Shall plead for Virtue's Right; / The Furious Storm - the whelming waves / Shall in her cause unite." The typographical borders are unusual and rustic consisting of short black hashes arranged horizontally vertically and diagonally. Apparently not recorded in OCLC or COPAC; however a prose account of the tale of "Cornelia and Juan" appears in Josiah Priest's The Wonders of Nature and Providence Displayed. Albany: 1826 and this composition appears to be modeled closely on that version. Issued without author imprint or date. Narrow folio broadside 52cm x 22cm. Verse in two columns typographical borders; portion of title within heart-shaped typographic ornaments. Old folds; faint stains and a few small punctures; Very Good. unknown

ANON PRANGE FG. F. G.
Art Criticism in Three Hours. On the principle of French before Breakfast.
Liverpool.: Self-published. First edition. Paperback. Poor. Printed by Hossfeld in Liverpool. 8vo.49pp. Bound in original paper wrappers which have comic drawings on the cover. Illustrated with five black and white drawing reproduced using lithography. They are all in the comic nature reminiscent of Cruikshank Jame Ross etc of the 1850s period. The book is looking at the comic side of contemporary artists who take art very seriously i.e Whistler Turner Etty Watts etc. The illustrator has remained anonymous. I suspect they were drawn by Prange The book is in a mess. There is some foxing throughout which is heavier on the end papers. ;the paper cover is frayed soiled with small pieces missing the stitching is loose I am unable to guarantee that the book is complete as the copies in COPAC do not mention number of illustrations. However it is very scarce/rare only a few copies would have been printed and an interesting view point on art of the period. Size 21 x 14cm 8.5 x 5.5 inches Within the COPAC collection of books there are only three copies of the book Art Criticism in Three Hours held within British Library collections. None are dated and all have varying dates guessed between 1850-1875. Francis Gerard Prange was the Art manager at The Grafton Galleries in the 1890s. There are certainly many letters to and from Prange and Whistler in the 1890s when he was manager at the Grafton Galleries. Previously he appears to have given a lecture on Art. It appears that Prange published The Sixtine Madonna by Raphael' : a paper read before the Liverpool Art Club January 31st 1876 / by F.G. Prange. He also wrote Specification of Francis Gerard Prange and William Whitthread: Utilizing Sewage. Published in 1870. This is held at the Wecome Institute who have also stated that : "Francis Gerard Prange of Liverpool in the county of Lancaster merchant and William Whitthread of the same place analytical chemist". Same person or different people with exactly the same name Appears to have been born circa 1843 in Liverpool. Interesting character.

Self-published. paperback
