A Rare Siam Photograph of a Large Ceremonial Temple Structure.
Siam Thailand circa 1908. 1908. Original photograph of a magnificent five-tier temple or structure possibly relating to a Royal cremation ceremony. Manuscript pencil inscription to verso suggests the date the photograph was taken. Gelatin silver print photograph. Measures approximately 10 x 145 cm. Very good condition. Suitable for framing. Very rare photograph. This grand structure features dancing Hindu deities lining its perimeter and numerous multi-tier umbrellas. Being supported by ropes on four sides an exquisite pavilion is carried high above by a mythical deity with features of the golden swan or hamsa the mythical steed of Hindu God Brahma and the face of Garuda the vehicle of Vishnu the symbol of divine power and authority of the king. Evidently welcome to visitors there is an open entrance and a man within the low brick wall which surrounds the temple. A single food vendor has positioned himself just outside of the wall. There is no indication of electric lighting and the structure is backed by an uncleared fully-treed area suggesting that the scene is outside of a city. Photo. unknown
