This book is in Good condition and alcks the DJ. The blue boards ahve some dirt and scrtaches ont he front and rear and there is sunning of the spine. The black wraparound with gold/black lettering is still bright though the gilt is rubbed off the spine letters. There is very minor wear at the corners and spine ends. The interior has mild yellowing to the endpapaers and boards. However the spine is tight and the text very clean not yellowed and unmarked throughout. There is a previous owner signature on the ffep. One of nine binding variants for this stated second printing. "There is reason to believe that these second printings were perhaps printed and certainly bound many years after 1935. The jacket for the second printing uses the design of the first printing but there is different printed matter on the front flap. The back panel and the rear flap are blank. Faulkner himself came to Toronto near the end of WWI to train to fly in the Canadian air force but the war ended before he could be shipped over to France. Original blue cloth titles to spine and front board gilt on black ground top edge black. With the dust jacket. Housed in a blue cloth folding case. Gilt titles chipped lightly rubbed at extremities mark to edge of rear board. A very good copy in the rubbed and chipped jacket. First edition first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by the author and Phoebe Omlie who inspired one of the characters in the novel on the front free endpaper "To a little 'big girl' in the south from Phoebe Omlie signed in her own hand and William Faulkner. Miss Stella Aiken. Oxford Miss April 29 1935". Phoebe Omlie was a female aviation pioneer celebrated in the national press for her aerial stunts and was the first woman appointed to the Bureau of Aeronautics. Her husband Vernon taught Faulkner to fly in 1933 and two months after he received his license the two flew to New Orleans to see the Pan-American air races. Faulkner began work on what would become Pylon as soon as he returned from the trip and it reflects "all the enthusiasm and fascination for aeronautica of the newly-fledged pilot" Harrison p. 153. Faulkner drew upon the Omlies for the characters of race-pilot Roger Shumann and his wife Laverne in the novel.
