Faulkner William
SANCTUARY
Random House NY. 1958. 1958. Octavo hardcover VG in red cloth with gilt lettering. No dj. Previous owner's label on inside cover. Deckled pages 250 pp Faulkner's sixth novel published February 1931 which marked his first commercial success. Faulkner almost tore it up after reading the galley proof but decided instead to rewrite it. This is the novel Faulkner wrote when his literary aspirations weren't paying the bills and he hoped to get a quick cash pay day to keep him in silk. One of his most violent dramatic and blatantly money hungry novels ever. The story was bought by Paramount in 1932 and was adapted twice for film as "The Story of Temple Drake". Both the book and film were controversial and the latter was banned for several years. The 1961 production was directed by Tony Richardson and featured Lee Remick and Yves Montand and was called Requium for a Nun. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Random House, NY. 1958. Hardcover
