CHAPMAN Edward.John..
A Drama of Two Lives; The Snake-Witch; A Canadian Summer Night; And Other Poems.
By E.J. Chapman Late of the University of Toronto Canada. London Kegan Paul Trench Trübner and Co. 1899. Post 8vo; blank before half-title; three blanks at end; pp.viii97i printer’s imprintvi; quarter cream smooth cloth ruled and lettered gilt on spine blue-green boards the front board lettered gilt; a.e. uncut; text-paper end-papers. Very slight wear to head and tail of spine and spine darkened to ivory; slight spotting to sides. Lengthy inscription on front blank v. note; otherwise a virtually fine copy. TOGETHER WITH: CHAPMAN Edward.John. A sequel to ‘Christabel’. A Review by L. No place privately printed May 1899. One gathering lge.12mo; issued without wrappers or half-title; final page blank; pp.24. Slight foxing to margins; faint vertical crease throughout suggesting it has been folded for posting; staples a little rusty; otherwise a very nice copy. Scarce. The lack of publisher’s advertisements on the terminal blanks of the first title may suggest that it was printed for the author. The inscription on the front blank is signed by Frances Chapman The Pines Hampton Wick Middlesex and dated 1908. It gives biographical information about the author who was a professor at London University before he went to Toronto and was concerned with natural history as are some of the poems in this volume. Reilly p.90. The second work which was certainly printed privately is a pseudonymous review of the first. It is quite scarce. COPAC records only the Cambridge London Library Trinity College Dublin and Oxford copies. Cambridge and the London Library ascribe it to Chapman. There is no copy in BLC. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated. hardcover
