I cittadini di Pine Cove, un'amena cittadina della California, si riuniscono all'emporio del vecchio Augustus Brine per discutere perché i cani abbiano tanto abbaiato la notte precedente. Si unisce a loro un piccoletto dai lineamenti da arabo appena arrivato in paese che si ostina ad affermare di essere il re dei ginn (anche se nessuno ha idea di cosa siano i ginn) e mastica in continuazione sale da cucina. Nel frattempo, il giovane Travis O'Hearn sta lasciando l'autostrada per entrare in città, convinto di avervi individuato la persona in grado di liberarlo dall'incubo che lo ha perseguitato negli ultimi settant'anni (già: non è che Travis sia poi tanto giovane). L'incubo in questione è un demone e si chiama Catch: è voracissimo e molto furbo, riconosce in Travis il suo padrone, e non ha nessuna intenzione di farsi separare da lui. E dato che è visibile solo a lui e a nessun altro, la sua posizione parrebbe inattaccabile. Catch non sa però della presenza in città del re dei ginn, suo eterno avversario; e non sa che il sovrano ha scelto il saggio Gus Brine perché lo assista nella caccia. Ha così inizio un epico, tragicomico, grottesco scontro fra il bene e il male, dove il bene ha difensori fra i meno efficienti: il povero Travis, il proprietario di un caffè appassionato di horror che parla esattamente come Howard Phillips Lovecraft, un fotografo in crisi matrimoniale, un poliziotto disastroso. Ce ne potrebbero essere altri, ma Catch se li è mangiati...
