COBBOLD The Reverend Richard AM.. A. M.
Valentine verses; Or Lines Of Truth love and virtue.
Ipswich: Printed and sold by E. Shalders 1827. Demy 8vo; blank before half-title blank at end; lithographic frontispiece 100 plates and one large folding plate by the author; two engraved portraits by Worthington after Gardiner with tissue guards; pp.4xvi not paginated1 - 244241 - 244245 - 262ii; later full dark green morocco ruled blind on sides spine with five raised bands ruled and lettered gilt; leaf of thin card bound in after front end-paper v. note. Light dusting and foxing passim; otherwise a nice copy. Presentation copy inscribed on the verso of the inserted leaf of thin card: “Charlotte Moore. / presented by The Author / Febry 14th 1848.†The second of Wolff’s two copies was also a presentation copy from the author given with a similar inscription in the same year to Charles John Martyn on August 31st raising the suspicion that he may have discovered a cache of them - or perhaps repurchased a small remainder stock from Shalders - at about this date. Wolff’s first copy was in the original boards and had a spine label claiming that there were “100 platesâ€. Neither Wolff nor Sadleir seem to have counted the plates in any of their copies nor do they mention the reduplicated page numbers. Both however call for an errata slip not present here. There is no list of plates but they are bound in to face pp.1 3 5 9 11 13 15 17 19 21 23 25 27 29 31 33 35 39 41 43 45 47 49 51 53 55 57 59 61 63 67 69 71 73 77 79 81 85 89 91 93 95 97 99 101 105 107 109 111 113 117 119 121 123 125 127 129 131 135 139 141 143 145 147 149 151 153 155 157 159 161 165 169 171 173 175 177 179 181 185 189 193 197 199 201 207 209 211 217 221 225 227 231 237 243 241 245 249 259 262. The large folding plate faces p.213. The engraved portraits of John Cobbold the author’s father and Elizebeth Cobbold his mother face respectively the dedication and p.xiv. The book was published at 30s. “Both the verses and the author’s own illustrations are highly entertaining.†- Wolff. Sadleir 575; Wolff 1286 and 1286a; NCBEL 3:717. Cobbold’s second book published in the same year as the first. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated. hardcover
