BOONE James Shergold.
Men and things In 1823: A poem in three epistles With notes.
By James Shergold Boone M.A. London: Printed for Harchard and Son Piccadilly 1823. Med.8vo; half-title not called for; pp.viii155i printer’s imprint; original light drab boards anciently and crudely re-backed with drab paper preserving a paper spine-label possibly a clipping from an old book catalogue v. note; a.e. uncut. Boards worn at corners and a little marked; paper of spine rubbed and a little cracking at joints despite the reback with the original paper in places showing through; end-papers foxed with offsetting onto facing page but otherwise internally nice. Reflections on politics European and British by a moderate libertarian. The author better known for his earlier verse epistles ‘The Oxford Spy’ became the first Vicar of St. John’s Paddington in 1832 having previously taught in Cheltenham. He had also won the Newdigate Prize in 1817 for his poem ‘The Farnese Hercules’. The present volume belonged to one of his former pupils W.D. Fane who has recorded these details lightly in pencil on the title-page and inscribed his name also in pencil on the front paste-down. The spine label reads vertically upwards in three lines of very small type: “340 Men and Things in 1823 a Poem in / three Epistles with Notes by J. Shergold / Boone 8vo boards od cost 8s. W 19 1823.†The wording is somewhat mysterious the ‘340’ and also the ‘8s’. suggesting to our minds a book catalogue. The volume was published according to the ‘English Catalogue of Books’ in June 1823 at 5s. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated. hardcover
