"L'occhio di Praga" è un saggio poetico di Michel Butor, costruito come "collage letterario" ispirandosi ai collages di Jiri Kolàr sulla Praga di Kafka. L'opera è unita, in dialogo strettissimo, a "Risposte", una riflessione di Kolàr sul proprio fare artistico. Nell'"Occhio di Praga" di Butor, il punto di partenza è la poesia di Baudelaire. La scelta potrebbe parere anomala, dal momento che è Kolàr stesso, in "Risposte", a indicare Mallarmé (ma, con qualche limite, pure Marinetti) come iniziatore della langue poetica contemporanea; in questo fiancheggiando una lunga e autorevole tradizione critica. Ma Mallarmé è etereo, di una raffinatezza estenuata, difficile, a volte impervio; e sempre teso in una ricerca nervosa, di uno splendore metallico, tanto quanto Baudelaire è imbevuto degli umori e delle opacità, dei profumi e dello sporco del vivere. Per questo la "materia Baudelaire" assomiglia così tanto alla "materia Kolàr", alle vecchie banconote usurate, alle scatole di cartone con le marche e i disegni, ai libri che nessuno legge più, ma che rivivono scolpiti, bucherellati, a strisce e frange. Una materia impura, carica di batteri, di segni, di storie, che viene rimontata - come fa Butor con un mazzetto di celebri versi baudelariani a risignificare e risignificarsi.
