Printed and decorated green cloth cord sewn with rear advertisement: "Printing in its various branches executed with neatness and accuracy by John Eliot No. 5 Court Street Boston". 14cm. pp. 11-34 39-44 of 72. Poor. Literally a fragment of a fragment 366/950 lines.with some pages detached small ink checks and a bracket on p.21 in "That harbinger of fate and gloom" stanza two checks on p. 24 and a pen note p.26 in the scorpion footnote. Still a curious item in its lacking state. The 1st edition 6/5/1813 had 685 lines the 2nd had 816 3rd with 950 5th with 1215 to the 7th and 8th of 1334 lines and all in one year. The incredible swelling poem with vampires scorpions adultery with Christian and Muslim slants on death love and sex. Giaour is Turkish for infidel or nonbeliever. Half title endpapers and title page are all present no evidence of past writing or bookplates is found on pages but there is some light foxing on some throughout. Book contains a Preface pp. ix to xxi followed by untrimmed pages of content and a VII-part Appendix pp. 173-208 plus a page of publisher's announcements at the back listing the titles of Byron. The signature letter "b" is displayed at the foot of the page vii. Page 101 is misnumbered as 110. Copy is identified as First Edition Second Issue published the same year as the First Issue with the Doge's longer speech on p. 151 extended by 7 lines to 12 1/2 lines long total. Printed by Thomas Davison Whitefriars. Scarce Out Of Print Book. Plot Synopsis: "The play is set in Venice in 1355. Marino Faliero recently elected Doge of Venice offends one of the chief officers of state Michel Steno. Steno retaliates by writing on the Doge's throne an indecent libel on Faliero's wife. For this he is tried by the Council of Forty and convicted but is only sentenced to a month's imprisonment. Faliero is so outraged by this as he believes inadequate punishment that he secretly joins in the conspiracy of a group of malcontents to overthrow the constitution of Venice thinking thereby to gain revenge on his enemies. The plot is discovered and Faliero is executed.": 6.5 x 10 in.: 261 pages . John Murray hardcover
