Contains ballads primarily concerning horse racing. Also includes some boxing billiards and baseball base ball and more. Rare photo of thoroughbred McChesney known as the West's Greatest Thoroughbred. Also numerous rare photos of turn of the century jockeys including Grover Cleveland Fuller who in 1902 earned $30 a month as a stable boy and less than a year later made $50000 equal to the American president. Fuller won nearly 300 races in just a year including the Futurity Suburban and Excelsior handicaps winning $250000 in purses. Also included are photos of McChesney's jockey C. Gray; Jockey George Odom who is in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame as a jockey and trainer and who is only one of two people to ever have won the Belmont Stakes as both a jockey and a trainer; Jockey Henry "Iceman" Spencer who was the leading American jockey in 1900 when he won the Futurity on Chanornac; as well as photos of jockeys Lucien Lyne Domnick and Robbins. A collection of 100 poems by Phoebe 1824 - 1871 who could be called an early feminist. The younger sister of Alice Cary she was raised in Ohio and moved to New York City in 1850 with her sister where they often hosted literary evenings attended by both the famous and the interested. The book shows moderate external wear with bumped and worn corners and similar spine tips. The front free end paper has been removed and the back free end paper is creased and soiled. The text block top edge is gilt while the tail edge is untrimmed. Some fore edges have been roughly opened with no damage to any text though. In her earlier published works her last name was often misspelled as Carey. . Hurd and Houghton hardcover
