br. Miss Jane Marple è nata dalla fantasia di Agatha Christie nel 1930: un'epoca nella quale le signorine non sposate di una certa età si chiamavano ancora "zitelle". E proprio un'attempata ma decisamente arzilla zitella è Miss Marple: tra un lavoro a crochet e una tazza di tè, infatti, finisce sempre per essere casualmente implicata in una serie di delitti che riesce a risolvere facendo appello alle proprie doti di "osservatrice della natura umana" (qualche maligno direbbe più banalmente di "pettegola"). Nella biblioteca di villa Bantry viene trovato il corpo di una sconosciuta in abito da sera. Chi è? Com'è finita lì? Chi l'ha uccisa? "C'è un cadavere in biblioteca" (1942) mostra una Miss Marple in piena forma, capace di far luce sui più tortuosi meandri dell'animo umano. Un quotidiano locale pubblica un curioso annuncio a pagamento nel quale si prevede un delitto. Tutti pensano a una burla, ma l'incredibile programma viene puntualmente rispettato: anche in "Un delitto avrà luogo" (1950) l'angelica Miss Marple capiterà nel posto giusto al momento giusto e riuscirà a chiarire l'enigma. In "Polvere negli occhi"(1953) Miss Marple saprà risolvere un'intricata vicenda: un facoltoso uomo d'affari, Rex Fortescue, muore subito dopo aver bevuto del tè. E poco dopo in casa sua avviene un secondo omicidio: la vittima è una conoscenza di Miss Marple.

Corpi al sole (1941) ci offre ancora l'immagine di un Poirot vacanziero, questa volta al Jolly Roger Hotel, sull'Isola del Contrabbandiere.
