Faulhaber spoke out against some Nazi policies, but publicly recognized the Nazi government as legitimate, required Catholic clergy to remain loyal to the Nazi government, and maintained bridges between fascism and the Church. Grazie al lavoro di contestualizzazione storica operato da Mara Fazio, in queste pagine il lettore ha il privilegio di seguire la storia in prima persona, condividendo la commozione, l'angoscia, le esili speranze, la dignità, l'impotenza e il terrore che le parole di queste lettere ancora suscitano a distanza di ottant'anni. Ed è tanto più importante che l'operazione di recupero di questo materiale unico sia stata compiuta proprio da Mara Fazio, una diretta discendente, che oltre alla competenza storiografica mostra una dedizione ostinata, ispirata da profonda pietas filiale, dolorosamente percepibile.

It is printed here in its original Geez, with a running Hebrew translation, a French translation, and with Arabic extracts. Jacques Faïtlovitch studied Ethiopian languages at the Sorbonne, visiting Ethiopia for the first time at the age of 23 in 1904 and dedicating the rest of his life to studying and improving the conditions of the Beta Israel. In 1864, 26 congregants of Bostons Adath Israel (now Temple Israel) and Ohabei Shalom held a meeting to launch the United Hebrew Benevolent Association (UHBA). The founders, many of whom were merchants and manufacturers, joined together in response to the growing number of Jewish immigrants arriving from Eastern Europe. Recognizing a cultural and economic divide between these newcomers and the earlier generations of Jewish immigrants from Central Europe, they sought to secure if possible the cooperation of the Jews of every nationality residing in or near Boston and to dispense the charities of the Israelitish persuasion with a greater degree of system and effectiveness than has heretofore prevailed. Members paid annual dues, though records were not kept. People in need applied to UHBA officers at their places of business for cash gifts or loans. Beginning in 1869, the UHBA began holding social events to raise funds, hosting a Purim Ball and annual picnics and banquets.
