‎FRANÇOIS FUMELLI.‎

‎Istanbul d'hier, sans lendemains. Edited and presented by Rifat N. Bali.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In French. ISTANBUL Constantinople Memoirs Social history Jewish society Judaica.‎

‎Freedman, Benjamin (Ben) H.‎

‎"Facts are Facts"‎

‎[2], 62 pages. Facsimile reproduction of letter addressed to Dr. David Goldstein, LL.D., by Benjamin H. Freedman, dated October 10, 1954. Freedman, a Jew turned Catholic, presents carefully researched and extensively referenced arguments, including why Jesus was not a Jew. His arguments lean heavily upon the history of the Chazars (Khazars) and cited Talmudic passages. Copy of detailed two-page typescript letter from Conde McGinley, Editor of the semi-monthly publication Common Sense, laid-in. McGinley encourages readers to order more copies of this work to help spread its message and to help fund his legal defense against Rabbi Joachim Prinz (who had accused Common Sense of libel for characterizing him as a "Red Rabbi"). Also laid-in is a copy of a one-page typescript page imploring readers to get copies of this book into the hands of half-a-million American community leaders. Light wear to book. Underlining and marginal lines in colored pencil on seven pages, inside back cover, and on first page of McGinley letter. Seven years after this letter was written, Freedman gave a shocking speech (audio available online) in which he linked the signing of the Balfour Declaration with America's entry into WWI. A sound vintage copy of this profound work. (Singerman 928) Book‎

‎POLYCHROME HISTORICAL HAGGADAH FOR PASSOVER, HAGGADAH.‎

‎8vo; 1st edition. Original Cloth in dustjacket, 4to, xxvi, 134 pages. Illustrates the quilt like nature of the text by color coding Bible, Mishnah, Talmudic passages (etc.) based on when they were added to the Haggadah as we know it today. In his article for volume 77 of the American Jewish Year Book entitled "Jewish Scholarship in the United States: Selections from the Literature, 1973-1975," Menahem Schmelzer highlighted Freedman's Polychrome Haggadah: "Seven colors indicate the seven periods, from biblical to modern, in which the various layers of the Haggadah came into being. Marginal comments on each passage give the source and comprehensive references to scholarly literature. Freedman's new translation and reproductions of many beautiful pages from medieval Haggadah manuscripts make this Haggadah particularly attractive." (1977, pp. 211-212). Very Good in Very Good Jacket. A Beautiful copy (HAG-8-22A)‎

‎8vo. Ix, 307 pages. First edition. SUBJECT (S) : Reform Judaism – customs and practices; Jewish law – Reform Judaism; Responsa -- 20th century. ISBN: 0878201084. “Freehof, [1892-1990] born in London, was taken to the United States in 1903 by his parents, who settled in Baltimore... He graduated from the University of Cincinnati and a year later was ordained at Hebrew Union College, whose faculty he then joined. After serving as a chaplain with the American forces in Europe during World War I, Freehof became professor of liturgy at Hebrew Union College. In 1924 he became rabbi of Congregation Kehillath Anshe Maarav in Chicago, and in 1934 he was appointed rabbi of Congregation Rodef Shalom in Pittsburgh. He remained at Rodef Shalom until his retirement in 1966. Freehof's scholarly endeavors were largely in two fields. The first was Jewish liturgy. In 1930 he was appointed chairman of the Reform Committee on Liturgy of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, whose work led to the publication of the two-volume Union Prayer Book and the Union Home Prayer Book, both of which stressed relevance to modern life and the inclusion of contemporary material in the service. He served as President of the CCAR from 1943 to 1945. His second main interest was the development of Jewish law as displayed in the literature of the responsa and its bearing on modern Jewish practice. He was appointed head of the Responsa Committee of the Central Conference of American Rabbis in 1955.” (EJ, 2007) Ex library, otherwise very good condition. (RAB-25-1) xx‎
