‎1st Edition. Original Paper Wrappers. 8vo. 32 pages ; 25 cm. In English. Two papers on Spinoza read before the Jews’ College Literary Society on June 5th 1887 and April 22nd 1888. “Jews' College was opened in Finsbury Square, London as a rabbinical seminary in 1855 with the support of Chief Rabbi Nathan Adler and of Sir Moses Montefiore, who had conceived the idea for such a venture as early as 1841. The college quickly established itself as a place where high quality rabbinical training was available and its alumni and staff often became prominent in Anglo-Jewry. In 1881, the College moved to larger premises in Tavistock Square, close to University College, where it was envisaged that Jews’ College students would be able to combine their religious studies and university studies to degree level. ” (Wikipedia, 2016) OCLC lists 17 copies worldwide. ‎TUV TAAM: LIVYAT HEN : HEN TOV : TAAM VE-REAH TOV.‎

‎1st edition, Original orange printed paper wrappers bound into later cloth, 12mo, 107+ 4 pages. The necessity for Jews to maintain the laws of ritual slaughter. In Hebrew and some English plus three different subtitles. Singerman 2503 (listing 7 copies) , Deinard 335. A Response to the First Anti-Shechitah Campaign in America. Aaron Zebi Friedman (1822-76) , served as shohet, or ritual slaughterer, in his native Poland before immigrating to New York in 1848, where he found employment in one of the city’s largest kosher slaughterhouses. In 1866 the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals launched the first anti-Shehitah campaign in America. The president of the Society, Henry Bergh, dispatched a letter to the proprietor of a kosher abattoir in New York accusing him of engaging in "barbarous, revolting, and wicked" practices. Bergh further called on him to desist from violating the laws of New York and of God by "mangl[ing] and tortur[ing] his creatures. " In 1875, Aaron Zebi Friedman, renowned for his piety, composed a sharp rejoinder entitled, Tub Taam, to refute Bergh's accusations. He not only succeeded in silencing Bergh, but even in convincing him: In 1885, Bergh defended shechitah against charges of cruelty leveled by the Philadelphia branch of his Society. (Goldman, 1092; JE, Vol. V, p. 518) . Apropos of the current culture wars, animal rights organizations and activists, within and outside of the Jewish world, continue to criticize kosher slaughtering practices on the grounds of animal cruelty. The orange wrappers present here are not noted by (perhaps unknown to? ) Goldman. A copy sold at auction in 2013 for over $4900 (with commissions) . The 2nd edition from 1876, translated into English, sold at auction 2 years later, in 2015, for over $8, 000 (with commissions) . The present copy, here: Ex-library with usual marks. Some old staining and toning, otherwise Very Good Condition. Rare and important. (KH-8-58)‎
