The Culture of Critique: An Evolutionary Analysis of Jewish Involvement in Twentieth-Century Intellectual and Political Movements
lxxiv, 421 pages. Bibliography, index and endnotes. "The Culture of Critique (CofC) was originally published in 1998. It described how Jewish intellectuals initiated and advanced a number of important intellectual and political movements during the 20th century. I argue that these movements are attempts to alter Western societies in a manner that would neutralize or end anti-Semitism and enhance the prospects for Jewish group community either in an overt or in a semi-cryptic manner." - Preface. "This first paperback edition attampts to answer some criticisms leveled against CofC. I also discuss issues including Jewish involvement in Communism, the emergence of the Holocaust as a central cultural icon in Western societies, Jewish invovlement in the U.S. media, and the role of Jewish organizations in censoring the Internet." - back cover. Unmarked with very light wear. Appears unread. A high-quality copy. Book

JUSTICE, RESPONSIBILITY AND RECONCILIATION IN THE WAKE OF CONFLICT
Hardback. 8vo. VIII, 230 pages. 24 cm. First edition. What are the moral obligations of participants and bystanders duringand in the wake of a conflict? How have theoretical understandings of justice, peace and responsibility changed in the face of contemporary realities of war? Drawing on the work of leading scholars in the fields of philosophy, political theory, international law, religious studies and peace studies, the collection significantly advances current literature on war, justice and post-conflict reconciliation. Contributors address some of the most pressing issues of international and civil conflict, including the tension between attributing individual and collective responsibility for the wrongs of war, the trade-offs made between the search for truth and demands for justice, and the conceptual intricacies of coming to understand just what is meant by peace and conflict. Individual essays also address concrete topics including the international criminal court, reparations, truces, political apologies, truth commissions and criminal trials, with an eye to contemporary examples from conflicts in the Middle East, Africa and North and South America. Magnes, J. L.
JEWISH REVIEW OF BROOKLYN [VOL. III ; NO. 4]
1st Edition. Original Wrappers. 8vo. 23 pages ; 24 cm. In English. A monthly publication that ran for about 3 years. The publication was edited by Judah Leon Magnes. Magnes (1877 1948) was a prominent Reform rabbi in both the United States and Mandatory Palestine. He is best remembered as a leader in the pacifist movement of the World War I period, his advocacy of a binational Jewish-Arab state in Palestine, and as one of the most widely recognized voices of 20th century American Reform Judaism. The Review was Magnes first American publication, long before he gained national fame. Originally, from San Francisco, Magnes moved to New York and set himself the task of uniting the Jewish communities. In 1880 the city contained around 50, 000 Jews mostly of German origin. By 1900 there were nearly a million Jews, most coming from what is now Poland, Hungary, Romania, Belarus and Ukraine, making it the largest Jewish population in the world. (Wikipedia, 2016) This issue of The Review is from April 1906. Articles provide a sketch of Jewish life in Brooklyn in the early 20th century. Includes a piece called, A Short History of Brownsville, which outlines Jewish poverty in the historic East Brooklyn neighborhood. Also includes a list of local Jewish publications, Brooklyn Synagogues, Educational Societies, and Benevolent Societies. Period Ads throughout. Very rare. OCLC lists just 1 copy worldwide (HUC) . Edgewear with tears. One word effected on cover page. Bottom right of every page is folded over. Text is bright and readable. About good condition. (AMR-49-7)

Magnes, J.L. (Judah)
LIKE ALL THE NATIONS?
1st edition. Original Paper Wrappers, 8vo, 77 pages. "'Can we establish our life here,' he asked in his 1930 pamphlet Like All the Nation? 'not upon the basis of force and power, but upon that of human solidarity and understanding?' His tireless pursuit of a cooperative relationship between Jews and Arabs was a manifestation of his philosophy of life; his effort on behalf of the binational plan stands as one in a series of efforts by him to change Jewish public life in both American and Mandatory Palestine" (Kotzin, 2010). In this pamphlet, Magnes includes his essay with the pamphlet's title, as well as his recent New York Times article and Philby's plan. He also republishes his 1921 letter to the editor of the London Jewish Chronicle in which he claims that redemption would come to the Jews only if they stop infringing on Arab national aspirations in Palestine. He placed this article in the pamphlet, he says, "to show that my present attitude is not new, and that it is the result of a view of life and a conception of the ethical function of Judaism and does not just spring from tactical or strategic motives." Finally, he also includes an English translation of Ahad Ha-Am's 1921 Preface to a new edition of his works. Important. Light wear & stains to cover, Very Good Condition. (zion-9-1) xx

Magness Jodi
Masada: From Jewish Revolt to Modern Myth
8vo, cloth in dj, pp.265. Two thousand years ago, 967 Jewish men, women, and children?the last holdouts of the revolt against Rome following the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Second Temple?reportedly took their own lives rather than surrender to the Roman army. This dramatic event, which took place on top of Masada, a barren and windswept mountain overlooking the Dead Sea, spawned a powerful story of Jewish resistance that came to symbolize the embattled modern State of Israel. The first extensive archaeological excavations of Masada began in the 1960s, and today the site draws visitors from around the world. And yet, because the mass suicide was recorded by only one ancient author?the Jewish historian Josephus?some scholars question if the event ever took place. Jodi Magness, an archaeologist who has excavated at Masada, explains what happened there, how we know it, and how recent developments might change understandings of the story. Incorporating the latest findings, she integrates literary and historical sources to show what life was like for Jews under Roman rule during an era that witnessed the reign of Herod and Jesus?s ministry and death. Featuring numerous illustrations, this is an engaging exploration of an ancient story that continues to grip the imagination today.
