MEKHILTA DE-RABI SHIM? ON BEN YOHAI ? AL SEFER SHEMOT: MELUKETET MI-TOKH MIDRASH HA-GADOL = MECHILTA DE-RABBI SIMON B. JOCHAI [BOUND WITH] ZUR EINLEITUNG IN DIE MECHILTA DE-RABBI SIMON BEN JOCHAI
Period Cloth. 4to. XVI, 180; 15 pages. 26 cm. First edition. In Hebrew and German. Mekhilta of Rabbi Simeon ben Yohai; 180 pages, in Hebrew. A reconstructed collection of biblical interpretations ascribed to Simeon ben Yohay. Bound with: Hoffman, Zur Einleitung in die Mechilta de-Rabbi Simon ben Jochai (15 pages, 1906, in German) , "Sonderabdruck aus dem Jahrbuch der Ju¨disch-literarischen Gesellschaft in Frankfurt a. M. , 1906." David Zevi Hoffmann (18431921) , rabbi and biblical and talmudic scholar; Rector of the Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin. The Mekhilta of Rabbi Simeon ben Yohai is a halakhic Midrash on Exodus from the school of R. Akiva , which is attributed to R. Simeon b. Yohai because of his exposition at the beginning of the book.
This Midrash was subsequently lost, and only portions were found by modern scholars. Meir Freidmann (Ish Shalom) was the first to collect the quotations from MS that were known in his time, and his list was augmented by a number of items by Hoffmann in his pioneering study of the tannaitic Midrashim. Israel Lewy then discovered that large portions of the Midrash had been cited by R. David ha-Adani in Midrashha-Gadol on Exodus, and Schechter published a few fragments from MS itself that he uncovered in the Cairo Genizah. The first edition of MS was published by Hoffmann (Frankfurt, 1905) , based on Midrash ha-Gadol and a small number of Genizah fragments identified by Schechter. - 2008 EJ. Attractively bound in period marbled boards and cloth. Subjects: Commentaries. Bible. Exodus - Commentaries. Bible. Exodus. Mekhilta of Rabbi Simeon ben Yohai Commentaries. Midrash. Haggada. OCLC lists 23 copies of the Zur Einleitung and 29 copies of the Mekhilta; not commonly bound together, according to oclc listings. Light wear to edges of binding, otherwise clean and fresh. Hofstein, David
FRAYD FUN NAYEM ZAYN: FERTE ZAMLUNG. [FREYD]
1st edition.original modernist covers,12mo, 141 pages ; 20 cm. In Yiddish. Text partially vocalized. David Hofstein (1889-1952) was a Russian-born Jewish poet who, after the Russian Revolution of 1917, which he welcomed...wrote only in Yiddish. He was coeditor of the Moscow Yiddish monthly Shtrom, the last organ of free Jewish expression in the Soviet Union. The poems in which he acclaimed the communist regime established him as one of the Kiev triumvirate of Yiddish poets, along with Leib Kvitko and Peretz Markish. Hofstein's elegies for Jewish communities devastated by the White movement pogroms appeared in 1922, with illustrations by Marc Chagall. Both had worked together as teachers at shelter for Jewish boys in suburban Malakhovka, which housed and employed boys orphaned by Ukrainian pogroms. Hofstein protested the banning of Hebrew and the persecution of Hebrew writers, arousing the suspicion of the authorities
. In 1939, Hofstein became member of the Communist Party. Hofstein hailed the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948; however, in the same year, when Joseph Stalin withdrew his support for Israel, Hofstein was arrested, together with Kvitko, Markish and other members of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, first transported to Moscow and then to Siberia. He was executed on the Night of the Murdered Poets (August 1213, 1952) , together with twelve other Yiddish writers and artists. After the death of Stalin, they were posthumously rehabilitated, and Hofstein's selected works reappeared in a Russian translation in 1958 (Wikipedia) . SUBJECT(S) : Yiddish poetry. Poems. OCLC: 19306078. OCLC lists 7 copies worldwide (Hebrew U, NLI, YIVO, Stanford, LOC, Harvard, HUC) , none west or south of Cincinnati. Cover toned with some edgewear, with a little loss to publishing info at lower inside margin, Good Condition overall. (Yid-42-3A)

He rose to prominence through his elegies of the Jewish communities that suffered during the White pogroms of 1922, many of which were illustrated by Marc Chagall. He emigrated to Palestine in 1923 as a result of the official banning of Hebrew and subsequent persecution of Hebrew writers. He ultimately returned in 1939 and joined the Communist Party. Holdheim, Samuel
Divre Ha-Shem= Worte Gottes, Oder Gottesdienstliche Vorträge Gehalten in Der Synagoge Zu Frankfurt A. O.
FT) Clothbound. 8vo. XX, 208 pages. 21 cm. First edition. In German. Three volumes in one. Half leather and cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Title translates as: Words of God, or liturgical presentation; Sermons and lectures in the synagogue at Frankfort-on-the-Oder. Samuel Holdheim (1806-1860) , a renowned extreme reform Rabbi, starting his Rabbinical career in 1936 at the synagogue at Frankfort-on-the-Oder, where these sermons were conducted. The Jewish Encylopedia relates his career and ideas during this period of writing thus: Here he remained until 1840, encountering many difficulties, due both to the distrust of those within the congregation who suspected the piety of a rabbi able to speak grammatical German, and who was a graduate of a German university, and to the peculiar legislation which in Prussia under Frederick William III. Regulated the status of the Jewish congregations. To bring about a change in this state of affairs was the purpose of Holdheim. In the preface to his "Gottesdienstliche Vorträge" (Frankfort-on-the-Oder, 1839) he appealed both to the government to accord the modern rabbinate the dignity due to it, and to the congregations to cease regarding the rabbi as an expert in Jewish casuistics mainly charged with the duty of answering "she'elot" (ritual questions) and inquiries concerning dietary laws. He insisted upon the recognition of the rabbi as preacher and teacher, who at the same time gives attention to the practical requirements of his office as the expert in Talmudical law. While in Frankfort, Holdheim scrupulously decided every question according to the Halakah. In his pulpit discourses belonging to this period the intention is plain to steer clear of mere rationalistic moralizing, on the one hand, and dry legalizing and unscientific speculation (in the style of the old "derashah") , on the other. Holdheim thus deserves to be remembered as one of the pioneers in the field of modern Jewish Homiletics, who showed what use should be made of the Midrashim and other Jewish writings. He also repeatedly took pains to arouse his congregation to help carry out Geiger's and Philippson's project of founding a Jewish theological faculty. Judaism even then had ceased for Holdheim to be an end unto itself. He had begun to view it as a force in the larger life of humanity. Subjects: Jewish sermons, German. Jews -- Poland -- Slubice. OCLC lists 12 copies worldwide. Covers soiled, leather rubbed. Pages wavy, foxed throughout, but clean, and pages firm. Very good condition. (GER-36-39)

Holdheim, Samuel [1st Edition Of Holdheims Most Important Work]
UEBER DIE AUTONOMIE DER RABBINEN UND DAS PRINCIP DER JÜDISCHEN EHE; EIN BEITRAG ZUR VERSTÄNDIGUNG ÜBER EINIGE DAS JUDENTHUM BETREFFENDE ZEITFRAGEN.
1st edition. Period Wrappers, 8vo, xii, 263 pages 26 cm. In German. Includes bibliographical references. Title translates as, On The Autonomy of the Rabbis and ahe Principle of Jewish Marriage; A Contribution to Understanding About Some Relevant Jewish Issues of the Day. Samuel Holdheim (1806 1860) was a German rabbi and author, and one of the more extreme leaders of the early Reform Movement in Judaism. A pioneer in modern Jewish homiletics, he was often at odds with the Orthodox community
. The most important work by Holdheim appeared under the title Die Autonomie der Rabbinen, (Schwerin and Berlin, 1843) . In this he pleads for the abolition of the antiquated Jewish marriage and divorce regulations mainly on the ground that the Jews do not constitute a political nation. The Jewish religious institutions must be rigidly kept distinct from the Jewish national ones, to which latter belong the laws of marriage and divorce. The laws of the modern states are not in conflict with the principles of the Jewish religion; therefore these modern laws, and not the Jewish national laws of other days, should regulate Jewish marriages and divorces (see Samuel Hirsch in Orient. Lit. , 1843, No. 44) . The importance of this book is attested by the stir it created among German Jewish communities, many members of which found in its attitude the solution of the problem of how loyalty to Judaism could be combined with unqualified allegiance to their German nationality. Evidence of its incisive character is furnished also by the polemical literature that grew out of it. In these discussions such men as A. Bernstein, Mendel Hess, Samson Raphael Hirsch, Zacharias Frankel, Raphael Kirchheim, Leopold Zunz, Leopold Löw, and Adolf Jellinek took part (Wikipedia, 2015) . SUBJECT(S) : Judaism and state. Marriage (Jewish law) . OCLC lists 28 copies worldwide. Spine cocked, otherwise Very Good Condition, an attractive copy. (women-4-8)
