‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original wrappers. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 13 p., a b/w picture shows John D. Rockefeller sitting and reading a newspaper on the front cover, and three unnumbered b/w ills. Chipped on spine and a small tear on the back cover. Otherwise a good copy. First and only edition of this rare biography of any member of the Rockefeller family in the Middle East. This exceedingly rare booklet (only three institutional paper copies) contains a brief biography of John Davison Rockefeller Sr., (1839-1937), known as an American philanthropist and the richest man in the world of his time. "Büyük Adamlar Serisi" [i.e. The "Big Men" series] consists of about 41 small books. They were all published in the same year (1927) by a delegation under the presidency of Gövsa and some of them were written by him personally. This series was groundbreaking since biography was not a much-explored genre in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. Ibrahim Alaeddin Gövsa was an Ottoman / Turkish writer, educator, and poet who is known for his biographic and encyclopedic studies. Özege 17040.; Three paper copies in OCLC: 460160558 & 79161461.‎

‎1st edition. Lacking outer color Wraps (thus starting on page 3). 4to. 40+12 page (total 52 pages) 28 cm. First edition. In Yiddish, with English section at rear. Nazi-era single issue of Nailebn, whole nr 78, May1936. Contains news from Birobizhan, reports from ICOR sections; etc. Nazi-era Communist monthly in support of Soviet Birobidjan, the Soviet Autonomos Jewish Republic. Much on rising Antisemitism in Germany, as well as, of course, the history of antisemitism in pre-Soviet Russia, reports Icor and settlement of Jews into Birobidzhan, why Icor opposes Zionism, photos, literary works, including poetry, fiction, humor, satire and other materials covering virtually all aspects of life in the Jewish Autonomous region. In the first issue of Nailebn, the editors proudly proclaimed that the magazine “will bring out more to the fore the work and objects of ICOS [Idishe Kolonizatsie Organizatsie, also known as IKOR]. This organisation is one of a body of similar organisations carrying on the same work in 22 countries. This work is to propagate in this country the complete reconstruction of the Jewish life in the U.S.S.R. What is actually the position of the Jewish masses in the U.S.S.R.? While in Germany, Poland and Romania new waves of pogroms and persecution indicate the terrible plight of millions of Jews in Europe, we have in contrast to this in one part of the world which covers one-sixth of the world's surface, a completely different picture. There, in the Soviet Union, where a new social order is being built the Jews have achieved an economic and political freedom which the Jews in the most democratic capitalist country have never known. Within 10 years the whole mode of Jewish life in the U.S.S.R. has been completely reconstructed. From an isolated and persecuted caste of economic parasites they have been transformed into healthy productive workers on an equal footing with all other citizens in the Soviet Union. The five flourishing Jewish National Regions and the Jewish Autonomous Territory of Biro Bidjan show what the erstwhile ‘Luft Mensch’ has accomplished under a government which stands for the complete freedom and self-determination of all its nationalities. The new Jewish life in the U.S.S.R. stands out as a beacon for those struggling and persecuted Jews in Fascist and semi-Fascist countries. This is the task which ICOS has set itself and which ‘New Life’ will help considerably in carrying out - of showing more and more people the way the Jewish problem has been solved in the U.S.S.R. In a period like the present, when some of the bloodiest pages in Jewish history are being written, an organisation like ICOS, carrying on such important work, should have the support of every progressive Jew in this country." Includes news from Birobizhan, reports from ICOR sections; etc. Like IKOR before it, Naylebn (New Life) was the monthly official organ of the pro-Soviet Jewish organization ICOR (Idishe kolonizatsya organizatsye, Association for Jewish Colonization in the Soviet Union). ‎Eros e Qabbalah‎

‎THE MYSTICAL EXPERIENCE IN ABRAHAM ABULAFIA.‎

‎8vo. 246 pages. First edition. SUBJECT (S) : Cabala – history; Ecstasy (Judaism) ; Abulafia, Abraham ben Samuel, 1240-ca. 1292. CONTENTS: Techniques for attaining ecstasy -- Music and ecstatic Kabbalah -- The mystical experience -- Erotic images for the estatic experience. SERIES: SUNY series in Judaica. ISBN: 0887065538. “Idel [b. 1947] was born in Romania and immigrated to Israel in 1963. He became a lecturer at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1977 and was subsequently Max Cooper Professor of Jewish Thought. From 1990 he was also a fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. In 1999 he was awarded the Israel Prize in Jewish thought. ...Idel expanded Scholem's distinction between "theosophical" and "ecstatic" forms of Kabbalah into a phenomenological distinction between two main kinds of Kabbalah. At the same time he stressed the theurgical practice attendant on theosophical discourse. In his book on Hasidism, Idel developed a "panoramic" account of the history of Kabbalah as the interplay of three models: theosophical, ecstatic, and magical. These models transformed the previous "monochromatic" picture of Kabbalah into a more complex view of tensions between schools and combinations between models, as evidenced in Idel's book on Messianism... Besides his broader contributions, Idel's writing includes many historical discoveries, such as the scope and influence of the writings of Ecstatic Kabbalist R. Abraham Abulafia, the uniqueness of the Italian kabbalists, as well as identification and dating of dozens of texts. ” (EJ, 2007) Ex library, otherwise very good condition. (RAB-26-11)xx‎

‎Kabbala und Eros. Moshe Idel. Aus dem Engl. übers. von Elke Morlok 1. Aufl.‎

‎SEFER HA-SHIRIM : LE-GANE-YELADIM U-LE-VATE-SEFER `AMAMIYIM VE-TIKHONIM, LE-BAYIT ULE-MAKHELAH‎

‎Revised edition, this edition containing first publication of Hava Nagila anywhere. Original boards. 8vo. 168 pages. 23 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates to “Book of Songs : For Kindergartens and National Schools. ” Abraham Zevi Idelsohn was a prominent Jewish musicologist, composer, and cantor. He is perhaps best known for his lyrical contribution to the song Hava Nagila and for his 10 volume work "Thesaurus of Hebrew Oriental Melodies. " (Wikipedia, 2016) In the work for sale here, Idelsohn analyzes various musical modes and intonations that are present in the wide spectrum of Jewish music. Thus, the reader gains a greater understanding of how songs are adapted to the various Jewish cultures of the Diaspora. “‘Hava Nagila’ (Havah Nagilah, ‘Let us rejoice’) is an Israeli folk song traditionally sung at Jewish celebrations. It is perhaps the first modern Israeli folk song in the Hebrew language that has become a staple of band performers at Jewish weddings and bar/bat mitzvah celebrations…. Abraham Zevi Idelsohn (1882–1938) , a professor at Hebrew University, began cataloging all known Jewish music and teaching classes in musical composition; one of his students was a promising cantorial student, Moshe Nathanson, who (with the rest of his class) was presented by the professor with a 19th-century, slow, melodious, chant (niggun or nigun) and assigned to add rhythm and words to fashion a modern Hebrew song. There are competing claims regarding Hava Nagila's composer, with both Idelsohn and Nathanson being suggested. The niggun he presented has been attributed to the Sadigurer Chasidim, who lived in what is now Ukraine, which uses the Phrygian dominant scale common in music of Transylvania. The commonly used text was probably refined by Idelsohn. In 1918, the song was one of the first songs designed to unite the early Yishuv [Jewish enterprise] that arose after the British victory in Palestine during World War I and the Balfour Declaration, declaring a national Jewish homeland in the lands newly liberated from Turkey by the Allies and entrusted to Britain under the Treaty of Versailles. Although Psalm 118 (verse 24) of the Hebrew Bible may have been a source for the text of ‘Hava Nagila’, the expression of the song and its accompanying hora (‘circle’) dance was entirely secular in its outlook” (Wikipedia, 2016) . Ex-library with usual markings. Binding is starting. Internally Very Good. Overall Good Condition. (MUSIC-6-24) xx‎
