NETIVOT SHALOM: KOLEL ORHOT HAYIM [MI-TUR SHULHAN ARUKH EVEN HA-EZER]: VE-ORHOT MISHPAT [MI-TUR SHULHAN ARUKH HOSHEN MISHPAT]: IM NETIV YAM, DEREKH TESHUVAH, DEREKH TEVUNOT
(FT) Hardcover, 8vo, 12, 108, 144 pages, 22 cm. In Hebrew. SUBJECT(S) : Karo, Joseph ben Ephraim, 1488-1575. Even ha-ezer -- Commentaries. Karo, Joseph ben Ephraim, 1488-1575. Hoshen mishpat-- Commentaries. Kahanov (18171883) , was a Jerusalem talmudist. He was born in Belorussia but after his marriage at the age of 15, settled in Petrovice where at the age of 18 he was appointed assistant to the local rabbi. Some years later, he became rabbi of Khaslavich, a city noted for its scholars. In 1864 he set out for Jerusalem. On his arrival, after a journey of six months, he was appointed head of the Ez Hayyim yeshivah, the most important in Jerusalem, remaining in this position until his death. Kahanov was remarkably progressive for his time and environment. He appealed for the founding of industrial enterprises, a daring proposal for that time. He even consented to the proposal of Sir Moses Montefiore to introduce the teaching of the vernacular, Arabic, in his yeshivah, but was obliged to abandon the proposal in the face of pressure from extremist elements. One of the first of the old yishuv to speak only Hebrew, he was also one of those who encouraged settlement outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, building a house for himself in Nahlat Shivah. Among his publications were Erez Hefez, on laws of terumah and tithes; Hukkot Olam, on mixed species; Mei Menuhot on the laws of the sabbath, to which was appended Palgei Mayim, giving rules for those traveling by ship on the sabbath; and Netivot ha-Shalom on the Shulhan Arukh. He applied himself particularly to the question of the application of the laws of the sabbatical year which had become of practical importance with the establishment of the Jewish agricultural colonies, and in this connection published Shenat ha-Sheva. The eulogies he delivered on the deaths of Baron Asher Rothschild and Sir Moses Montefiore were published. His Shaalu Shelom Yerushalayim on the state of Jerusalem and its citizens was published three times. His will was published in 1968 together with a responsum on Jerusalem and a brief biography (Alfassi in EJ, 2007) . OCLC lists 2 copies worldwide (Brandeis, Univ Col of London) . Ex library. Binding repair. Chipping on corners and edges. Stained pages. Handwritten notes on inside front and back cover. Wear to cover spine. Otherwise good condition. (Rab-44-19)

SHULHAN 'ARUKH MI-TUR ORAH HAYIM. HELEK RASHON [VOL I. ONLY, OF II]
Period full leather binding, 8vo, 370 + [1] Leaves [740 + 2 pages]. In Hebrew. Printed entirely on Blue paper. Red and black lettering on title page. me-et Yosef Karo ; ?im Hidushe dinim me-et Mosheh Iserles; ve-im Baer hetev. Yehudah Ashkenazi, dayan di-k. k. Tiktin. The Shulchan Aruch, sometimes dubbed in English as the Code of Jewish Law, is the most widely consulted of the various legal codes in Judaism. It was authored in Safed (today in Israel) by Joseph Karo in 1563 and published in Venice two years later. Together with its commentaries, it is the most widely accepted compilation of Jewish law ever written. The halachic rulings in the Shulchan Aruch generally follow Sephardic law and customs, whereas Ashkenazi Jews generally follow the halachic rulings of Moses Isserles, whose glosses to the Shulchan Aruch note where the Sephardic and Ashkenazi customs differ. These glosses are widely referred to as the mappah (literally: the tablecloth) to the Shulchan Aruch's Set Table. Almost all published editions of the Shulchan Aruch include this gloss, and the term Shulchan Aruch has come to denote both Karo's work as well as Isserles', with Karo usually referred to as the mechaber (author) and Isserles as the Rema (an acronym of Rabbi Moshe Isserles). Due to the increased availability of the printing press, the 16th century was an era of legal codification in Poland, the Ottoman Empire and other countries. Previously unwritten laws and customs were being compiled and recorded; the Shulchan Aruch was one of these. In the century after it was published by Karo (whose vision was a unified Judaism under the Sephardic traditions) it became the code of law for Ashkenazim, together with the later commentaries of Moses Isserles and the 17th century Polish rabbis (WIkipedia). OCLC: 39808032/233341596. OCLC lists 3 copies worldwide (NLI, NYPL, JTSA). Period inscriptions on blank endpapers, Very Good Condition. Attractive blue paper copy. (RAB-66-29)

Karo, Joseph Ben Ephraim; Moses Ben Israel Isserles; Moses Ben Naphtali Hirsch Rivkes Beer Ha-Golah; Judah Ben Simeon Ashkenazi Beer Hetev.
SHULHAN ARUKH MI-TUR ORAH HAYIM
Original boards. 12mo. [5], 320 leaves. 19 cm. In Hebrew. Shulhan Arukh (Set Table) A summary and codification of halakhah in brief and authoritative form, completed in Safed in 1563 by the Sephardic rabbi, Yosef Karo. First published in Venice in 1565 and reprinted many times in the succeeding decades and centuries, the Shulhan arukh is an abridgement and distillation of Karos Bet Yosefcommentary and glosses on the medieval code Arbaah turim by Yaakov ben Asher. As is the Turim, the Shulhan arukh is divided into four sections: Orah hayim, on Sabbath, holiday and daily commandments; Yoreh deah, on dietary laws and various other categories such as mourning and purity; Even ha-ezer, chiefly on marriage and divorce; and ? Oshen mishpat, mainly on civil law.
Mosheh Isserles (Rema; 1520? 1572) , who had composed his own commentary on the Arbaah turim called Darkhe Mosheh, expressed strong, albeit critical, support for adopting the Shulhan arukh. He maintained that its widespread acceptance gave it halakhic status and prestige that should not be defied. Thus, a judge who ruled contrary to the Shulhan arukh would be considered to have erred and his verdict would be annulled. To prevent the Shulhan arukh from achieving authoritative status in Poland in its original form, Isserles added his own gloss to it, Ha-Mapah (The Tablecloth) , in which he presented dissenting Ashkenazic opinions. In this way, he increased the diffusion of Shulhan arukh but also stopped the spread of the Sephardic tradition represented in it through the Polish halakhic world. Subsequent Polish and Ashkenazic traditions accepted the view that whenever Isserles dissented from Karo, judges would rule according to Ha-Mapah; only the absence of a gloss was considered to be agreement with the Shulhan arukh. (Yivo Encyclopedia of Jews in Eastern Europe; Shulhan arukh) . Printed on ragpaper, with decorative border on title page. Subjects: Karo, Joseph ben Ephraim, 1488-1575. Orah hayim. OCLC lists 7 copies (of Shulhan Arukh by this printer in the 16th century; none listed for this year) . Backstrip previously rebacked with tape, previous repairs to title page, light edge wear and light soiling throughout, otherwise fresh. Good + condition. (SPEC-36-27)

Karski, Jan [Signed]
Story of a Secret State [Including Early Warsaw Ghetto Eyewitness Account]
Signed and inscribed by Jan Karski upon front free endpaper. Karski [1914-2000] recounts his experiences when his homeland of Poland was rent asunder by the joint Nazi and Soviet invasion of 1939, and his harrowing subsequent life as a member of the Polish underground, during which he was captured by the Gestapo and severely tortured. Provides a ghastly eyewitness account of life in the Warsaw ghetto, into which Karski was smuggled so his observations could be reported to the outside world. Firearms advocates will cringe at Karski's account of what happened after he and a large group of Polish soldiers handed over their weapons to their 'comrades' from the Soviet Union. In 2012 Karski was posthumously awarded America's highest civilan honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, by President Obama. 391 pages. Moderate wear to publisher's red cloth. Dust jacket now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. Binding intact. A sound copy of this truly unforgettable WWII narrative. Laska 672, Kehr & Langmaid 5407, Weiner Library Catalogue Seven 997, Enser p.343. Book
