‎THE FALLACY OF RACE AND THE SHOAH‎

‎Softbound. 4to. XXII, 358 pages. 26 cm. First edition. Profusely illustrated with over 100 photographs in color. Naomi Kramer, the Education Director of the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre, and Ronald Headland, music teacher at Vanier College, use the example of the individual to approach universal issues that inevitably arise in discussing the Holocaust - evil, courage, human dignity, moral responsibility, and the existential qualities of humankind. This book consists of two main sections - the first involves interpretation and reflections on the meaning of one individual's experiences during the Shoah. The second section sets forth the historical content in which these experiences occurred. It contains a comprehensive historical summary of the Shoah and represents a succinct synopsis of existing secondary literature and primary sources. A bibliography and extensive glossary of terms relating to both Jewish life and the Shoah are included. The strength of the book lies in its combination of micro- and macro-histories. Its micro-history section, entitled ``One, '' comes in the form of the personal testimony of Holocaust survivor Peter Kleinmann. It provides detail and individual nuance to the general, impersonal events of the Shoah. From sweet, pre-war memories of Jewish communal life in Munkàcs, to his death march from Gross-Rosen to Flossenbürg, Kleinmann's voice quietly evokes a small, tragic piece of the puzzle of Holocaust suffering. His experience of being saved from certain death only by a chance encounter with his brother who was a prisoner processing other prisoners in Flossenbürg, reminds us of the often arbitrary, slight difference between survivor and victim. Subjects: Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) . Antisemitism - Germany - History. Racism - Germany - History. Jews - Persecutions - Germany - History - 20th century. Light shelf wear to covers, upper edge lightly soiled. Light blue highlighting of scattered sentences in the later “Ghetto: Identification and Isolation” section; otherwise clean and fresh. Good condition. (HOLO2-97-3)‎

(Verlag). - Mit einem Literaturverzeichnis. - Karl Kraus (1874-1936). - Einbandgestaltung: Tuna Çiner.‎

‎OUR DEBT AND DUTY TO THE REV. DR. ISAAC M. WISE: AN ADDRESS [AT] PHILADELPHIA, APRIL 5TH, 1903‎

‎1st edition. Original stapled paper wrappers with illustration of the Rev. Dr. Isaac M. Wise on front and illustration of Hebrew Union College on back. 8vo, 10 pages. €œNo other Rabbi ever achieved what Dr. Wise had achieved for Israel’s sacred cause; no other Rabbi ever toiled and suffered for reform as he toiled and suffered…. He was the Jochanan ben Zaccai, who, by establishing the Hebrew Union College, founded a new centre for Israel’s religion and literature, and saved his people from the threatening doom of dissolution. € Krauskopf’s eulogy here discusses at great lenght Hebrew Union College, which was founded by Dr. Wise. It ends with “Ours is the obligation to endow the Hebrew Union College, - as our debt of gratitude to Dr. Wise, as our duty to our children and ourselves, ” and with a form to donate to the Isaac M. Wise Memorial Fund National Committee which was an endowment fund for the Hebrew Union College. Joseph Krauskopf, (1858–1923) the author, was himself a leading U. S. Reform rabbi who very much led the movement following Wise’s death which he memorialized here in 1903.. While enrolled at HUC in the first class of Hebrew Union College, “he wrote a periodical for Jewish youth entitled the Sabbath Visitor and three textbooks for religious education. After serving a congregation in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1887 Krauskopf became rabbi of the Reform Congregation Kenesseth Israel, Philadelphia, which he served for the remainder of his life. Krauskopf became a leader of radical Reform, introducing Sunday services and compiling a Service Ritual (1888, 1924) . A leading figure in the national organizations of Reform Judaism, he served as a vice president of the conference which adopted the Pittsburgh Platform in 1885, the conference which he first proposed to Kohler, and president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (1903–05) . He was active in work for the poor, arguing for increased sanitation and better living conditions. He proposed a program of direct contact between successful and poor Jews, an unsuccessful forerunner of Big Brother programs. A man of forceful energy, he paid attention to the need for Jewish literature, and the outcome was the foundation in 1888 of the Jewish Publication Society of America, of which he was the first honorary secretary. Impressed during a visit to Russia in 1894 by the zeal with which Jews engaged in agriculture where the Russian government allowed, he established the National Farm School at Doylestown, Pennsylvania, in 1896 ‘as one of the best means of securing safety and happiness to the sorely afflicted of our people. €™ In 1917 he was appointed to direct food conservation among Jews for the U. S. Food Administration. At first an anti-Zionist, Krauskopf modified his attitude as a result of the labors of Jewish agriculturalists in Palestine. There too he was impressed with their agricultural work and soon found himself a defender of Zionism against anti-Zionists” (Temkin in EJ, 2007) . OCLC: 173007139, OCLC lists 2 copies worldwide (Hebrew Union College, National Library of Israel) . Pencil marks in margins on few pages, slight tearing along spine. Overall Very Good Condition. Rare (AMR-57-3)‎

He only learned of Hebrew Union College by reading a book from a library, ostensibly to improve his English, and enrolled in 1875 in the first class of Hebrew Union College, receiving his ordination in 1883. At the College he wrote a periodical for Jewish youth entitled the Sabbath Visitor and three textbooks for religious education. Impressed during a visit to Russia in 1894 by the zeal with which Jews engaged in agriculture where the Russian government allowed, he established the National Farm School at Doylestown, Pennsylvania, in 1896 "as one of the best means of securing safety and happiness to the sorely afflicted of our people. " In 1917 he was appointed to direct food conservation among Jews for the U. ‎THE ASCENDENCY OF WOMANHOOD. A DISCOURSE‎

‎1st Edition. Original Wrappers. 8vo. [19]- 34 pages ; 22 cm. From Sunday Discourses by Rabbi Joseph Krauskopf. In this discourse, read by Rabbi Krauskopf at Temple Keneseth Israel in Philadelphia in 1908, the massively influential and revered Philadelphia Rabbi takes a pro-suffrage stance and reflects on the 19th century as a time of immense progress for womens rights. He begins (12 years before Women would obtain the right to vote in the United States) , "The press has had much to say of the riotous methods which the London suffragettes recently pursued to obtain a hearing before the British Parliament Women (these critics) claim, are moved too much by hysteria and too little by reason That some of the methods pursued by the English suffragettes are to be deplored is freely admitted even by men who are favorably disposed towards extending the full franchise to women. But they recognize nothing distinctively feminine in such riotous procedures men have adopted similar courses, and have through them won great victories" "Joseph Krauskopf (1858 1923) was a prominent American rabbi, author, leader of Reform Judaism, founder of the National Farm School (now Delaware Valley University) , and long-time (1887-1923) rabbi at Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel (KI) , the oldest reform synagogue in Philadelphia which under Krauskopf, became the largest reform congregation in the nation. " (Wikipeida, 2017) . Series XXII. Nos. 3 &4. ‎Die Wiener Geserah Vom Jahre 1421‎

‎FT) Clothbound. 8vo. X, [1], 264 pages. 24 cm. First edition. In German, with some Hebrew. Cloth and decorative paper boards, with original paper wrapper title pastedown. “The Vienna Geserah of 1421”, written by Samuel Krauss, stands as one of the finest histories and documentation of literature on the Vienna Geserah, the “persecution of Jews in Vienna and its environs in 1421. The early 15th century was a period of rising hatred of the burghers of Vienna against the Jews, kindled in part by Jewish wealth. The Hussite heresy had widespread reverberations in Austria at the time, and it was generally held that Jews and Hussites maintained close contact. Duke Albert V, inclined to religious fanaticism and disturbed by the Hussite rebellion, was also deeply in debt to Jewish moneylenders and without the means of repayment. At Easter 1420 a rumor was spread among the population of Vienna that a rich Jew named Israel had bought consecrated hosts from the wife of a Church sexton in Enns, and distributed them among other Jews who desecrated them. The Jews who were implicated were brought to Vienna, imprisoned, and tortured. On May 23, 1420, the Jews were rounded up in all the cities and towns of Austria and their possessions taken from them. The wealthy were imprisoned in Vienna, while the poor were put into boats without oars on the Danube at the mercy of the stream. Some Jews were held captive in houses, others in the synagogues. Children were separated from parents and husbands from wives, and an attempt was made to convert them to Christianity. The rabbis of Italy appealed to Pope Martin V for his intervention on behalf of the Jews of Austria. He reacted by threatening with excommunication anyone who forced Jews to convert. Nonetheless, many of the children taken from their parents were carried off to monasteries and there forcibly converted. A great many of those imprisoned committed suicide, including those held in the synagogues; the last one alive, R. Jonah, set fire to the corpses and died on the funeral pyre. The Jews who were left, 120 women and 92 men, were burned at the stake on March 12, 1421. All the property of the Jews passed to Duke Albert. The stones of the synagogue were used in building the university. Some Jews escaped to Bohemia; a very few managed to maintain an illegal existence in Austria. The proud Vienna community numbering between 1, 400 and 1, 600 existed no longer, and the city became known in Jewish tradition as "Ir ha-Damim" ("The City of Blood") . ” Samuel Krauss (February 18, 1866 - June 4, 1948) was professor at the Jewish Teachers' Seminary, Budapest, 1894–1906, and at the Jewish Theological Seminary, Vienna, 1906-1938. He came to England as a refugee and spent his last years at Cambridge. He was a contributor to the Jewish Encyclopedia as “S. Kr. ” In 1910, he became a pioneer in Talmudic archaeology with the publication of Talmudische Archäologie, which was reprinted in Hebrew in 1924. His 1922 study of the ancient synagogue, Synagogale Altertümer is still considered essential reading on the topic. In 1935 he published a comprehensive and detailed study of Biblical names of ninety eight then modern nations. (Encyclopedia Judaica 2008) . Subjects: Jews -- Austria. Backstrip shaken, edges of cover boards worn, with upper right edge on back cover absent. Endpages heavily worn, with torn corners on back endpages and bibliography, not affecting text.
