Important issue from just prior to statehood of this important Zionist photographic periodical, filled with black-and-white photographs, tables, maps, and articles. The Histadrut was founded in December 1929 in Haifa to look out for the interests of Jewish workers...The Histadrut became one of the most powerful institutions in the state of Israel, a mainstay of the Labour Zionist movement and, aside from being a trade union, its state-building role made it the owner of a number of businesses and factories and, for a time, the largest employer in the country. Until Israel began moving away from a socialist economy, the Histadrut, along with the government, owned most of the economy (Wikipedia 2017) . Newspaper headlines report the sensational side of events in Palestine, but rarely the important things that happen daily. The Jewish State is being built by men and women with a single mind and single purpose, men and women of the Histadrut who stick to their task in fields and factories, who reluctantly take the gun in hand to ward off the enemy. HISTADRUT FOTO-NEWS will bring to American Jewry the story of Palestine in its proper perspective. Its heroes will be workers. Original Wraps. 8vo. 92 pages. 25 cm. First edition. First general convention report of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods. Founded in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1913 as the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods (NFTS)
Largely at the instigation of Mrs. Abram (Carrie) Simon of Washington D. C. And Rabbi George Zepin, the director of Synagogue and School Extension of the UAHC, the sisterhoods of the Reform congregations of America were federated in 1913. The first meeting of the NFTS brought together 156 delegates from 49 sisterhoods. Mrs. Simon was elected temporary chair and later served as the NFTS's first president. Rabbi Zepin was elected executive secretary of the new organization. Initially, the NFTS emphasized its religious role as an auxiliary and support to the synagogue and various institutions of Reform Jewry. Committees were set up on religious education, museums and Jewish ceremonial objects, scholarships for the Hebrew Union College (HUC) , cooperation, and public relations. Within a few years, however, the NFTS set the pattern for taking stands on issues of national and international importance by passing a resolution protesting the passage of an immigration bill stipulating literacy tests for all immigrants entering the U. .In 1921, several organizations merged with the JWB to become a national association of Jewish community centers around the country in order to integrate social activities, education, and active recreation. These merged organizations included the YWHA, YMHA, and the National Council of Young Men's Hebrew and Kindred Association (Wikipedia). These quarterly journals report on those efforts and make suggestions for how to improve outreach, activities, and leadership; they also make other proposals and raise questions for the Jewish Community Center movement to grapple with. The Book of Proverbs (Mishli Shlomoh," or Solomons Proverbs) is a book in the third section of the Hebrew Bible, Ketuvim. Written by King Solomon, it discusses values, moral behavior, the meaning of human life, and ethical conduct. Louis Naumurg (1813-1902) went to America after 1848, and was elected cantor of Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel at Philadelphia, Pa., which position he held from 1850 to 1860. In 1865 he was chosen minister of Congregation Rodeph Shalom, Pittsburg, Pa
.During his earlier years in America Naumburg acted as teacher and reader in the synagogue of the Congregation Keneseth Israel of Philadelphia. He prepared a metrical version in German of the Book of Proverbs which is this work (Cyrus Adler & Josiah Cohen in JE). Naumburgs biography appears in the American Hebrew, March, 1902.
