JUDAISM IN THE NEW TESTAMENT: PRACTICES AND BELIEFS
Softcover. 8vo. XIX, 203 pages. 23 cm. First edition. Judaism in the New Testament explains how the books of the early church emerged from communities which defined themselves in Judaic terms even as they professed faith in Christ. The earliest Christians set forth the Torah as they understood it - they did not think of their religion as Christianity, but as Judaism. For the first time, in Judaism in the New Testament, two distinguished scholars take the earliest Christians at their word and ask: 'If Christianity is (a) Judaism, then how should we read the New Testament? ' The Gospels, Paul's Letters, and the Letter to the Hebrews are interpreted to define what Chilton and Neusner call 'Christianity's Judaism. ' Seen in this way, the New Testament will never be the same. (Publishers Description) . Subjects: Judaism (Christian theology) Christianity - Origin. Jewish sects - History. Judaism - Relations - Christianity. Christianity and other religions - Judaism. Bible. New Testament - Criticism, interpretation, etc. Light shelf wear, otherwise fresh. Very good condition. HIS BROTHER'S KEEPER: 50 YEARS OF THE AMERICAN JEWISH SOCIETY FOR SERVICE
Softbound. 8vo. XVIII, 161, [10] pages. 21 cm. First edition. With a foreword by Jacob Neusner. Ten pages of plates. Tells the story of young peoples volunteer efforts as part of the American Jewish Society for Service. This book presents a detail flashback about the American Jewish Society for Service. For half a century the Society has realized in concrete deeds the prophetic vision for the social order, a vision of service to the needy, of tzedakah, the Hebrew word for righteousness and also for charity. But that service takes the form not of donating funds, an impersonal, generic action, but of donating ones own strength and energy, personally and particularly. Giving a month and a half or more for five eight-hour days a week to build, paint, renovate, clean up, the young people gathered in the Societys projects have gotten as much as they have given. The experience of hard work for others carries with it lessons learned for a lifetime. (Publishers description) Subjects: American Jewish Society for Service - History. Clean and fresh. AHISEFER : MEASEF LE-DIVRE SIFRUT, HEKER HA-LESHONOT BE-YISRAEL VE-TARGUMIM MIN HA-SHIRAH HA-IDIT.
8vo. 583 pages. In Hebrew. English title: Studies in the literatures and languages of the Jews, short stories and translations from Yiddish poetry. SUBJECT (S) : Jewish literature - history and criticism; Yiddish literature - translations in Hebrew. Samuel Niger was the pseudonym of Samuel Charney (1883-1955) . A Zionist influenced by Adah Ha-Am and a Russian socialist revolutionary, he joined the Zionist-Socialist Workers Party, and was repeatedly arrested and tortured by Russian authorities. Though his first literary efforts were in Russian and Hebrew, his mature work was written mostly in Yiddish. After being imprisoned by Polish legionaires in 1919, Niger left for the United States. In New York, he worked for Der Tog, a Yiddish daily; beginning in 1920, he worked for the paper for 35 years, "becoming the most revered and feared Yiddish critic of his generation. " Outside of strictly literary work, Niger worked with the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research from its inception, a and helped found the Congress for Jewish Culture. (Liptzin, EJ) "Born in Chudnov, Volhynia (Russia) , Ribalow (1895-1953) received a yeshivah education and also studied at the University of Moscow; he emigrated to the United States in 1921. Two years later he was appointed editor of the Hebrew weekly Hadoar. For 30 years he wrote his weekly editorials under his pseudonym, M. Shoshani, and hundreds of essays which appeared in various periodicals and, eventually, were collected in five volumes. As an essayist he concentrated on literary criticism, especially of Hebrew poetry. Though his love for Hebrew sometimes led him to hyperbolic evaluations of Hebrew writers, he was a perceptive critic. Many Hebrew authors in the U. S. Made their debut under his guidance. Ribalow was a leader of Histadrut, an organization which propagates Hebrew culture in the United States. With Israel's President Izhak Ben-Zvi, he was co-president of the World Hebrew Union. Consists of an angry polemic written by English bishop John James Stewart Perowne (1823-1904) in regards to Donaldson's 'Jashar; Fragmenta archetypa carminum Hebraicorum', 1854. Donaldson wrote a reply considering Perowne's vitriolic response to be near-slanderous, and Perowne wrote a rebuttal, attaching it to the second edition. John William Donaldson (7 June 1811 10 February 1861) was an English philologist and biblical critic; A brilliant and original scholar; one of the pioneers in applying comparative methods to Greek and Latin Philology. In Jashar (published 1854) he advanced the bold critical theory that fragments of a book of Jashar are to be detected throughout the Old Testament up to and including the reign of Solomon, and that they are 'the religious marrow of the scriptures. Philo Judaeus, or Philo of Alexandria, lived ca. 20 B. C. E. To 50 C. E. His works are written in an exceedingly rich Greek, and show great erudition in classical literature and both classical and contemporary philosophy, a thorough training in the art of rhetoric, and a broad knowledge of general science. Philo must have obtained this education in Greek schools. Everything that has been inferred as to the sources of his Jewish knowledge remains highly hypothetical, since the existence of Jewish schools in the Diaspora of that time has not been proved. (Jt) Pinski, David
DOS IDISHE DRAMA: EYN IBERBLIK IBER IHR ENTVIKLUNG
(FT) Hardcover, 12mo, 57 pages, 19 cm. In Yiddish. SUBJECT(S) : Yiddish drama -- History and criticism. At head of title: The Jewish drama. Other Titles: Jewish drama. Pinski (1872-1959) was a Yiddish author. Born in Mogilev, Russia, Pinski moved to Moscow with his family at 14. He received not only a traditional but also an excellent secular education. He early became interested in literature and in socialism. After living briefly in Vitebsk, he pursued university studies in Vienna and later Berlin, also living in Warsaw, where writer I. L. Peretz became his mentor. Pinski published his first stories in Mordecai Spectors Der Hoyzfraynd and Peretzs Yontif Bletlekh in 1894. Pinskis early writing introduced the Jewish proletariat as a subject in Yiddish literature. He wrote his first full-length play, Ayzik Sheftl, which Martin Buber later translated into German, shortly before moving to New York to edit the Socialist Labor Party's Yiddish newspaper Abend Blat with labor leader Joseph Schlossberg. He also pursued a Ph. D. In German at Columbia University
Pinski wrote over 25 full-length plays, three novels, scores of short stories and one-act plays, two volumes of travel essays, a screenplay, and one of the first histories of the Yiddish theater. Until the 1940s, he was perhaps the world's most frequently and widely translated Yiddish author. Key plays include Di Familye Tsvi, written following the Kishinev pogrom, published and smuggled into Russia by the Bund; Yankl der Shmid, his most frequently performed work, which he adapted into a film for director Edgar G. Ulmer in 1938; and Der Oytser, perhaps his greatest work, a dark comedy about greed in a Jewish town that critic George Pearce Baker compared in achievement to Ben Jonsons Volpone. Yankl der Shmid, depicting a married blacksmiths relationship with his neighbors wife, is considered the Yiddish theater's first exploration of illicit sexual passion. Pinskis plays were produced by some of the worlds leading theatrical companies. Der Oytser was first produced by Max Reinhardt at Berlin's Deutsches Theater in 1911. The Theater Guild produced it in English translation by Ludwig Lewisohn in 1920, as well as Dos Letste Sakhakl. Konstantin Stanislavski selected Pinskis one-act Der Eybiker Yid for the Habimah Theatres inaugural performance in 1918. Other companies to produce Pinskis plays included the Provincetown Players, the Yiddish Art Theater, the Folksbine, and the Vilna Troupe. Very Good Condition in later cloth binding with original wrapper bound in. (HEB-40-11)
