Nelson Eric
The Hebrew Republic: Jewish Sources and the Transformation of European Political Thought
8vom 240pp. According to a commonplace narrative, the rise of modern political thought in the West resulted from secularizationthe exclusion of religious arguments from political discourse. But in this pathbreaking work, Eric Nelson argues that this familiar story is wrong. Instead, he contends, political thought in early-modern Europe became less, not more, secular with time, and it was the Christian encounter with Hebrew sources that provoked this radical transformation. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Christian scholars began to regard the Hebrew Bible as a political constitution designed by God for the children of Israel. Newly available rabbinic materials became authoritative guides to the institutions and practices of the perfect republic. This thinking resulted in a sweeping reorientation of political commitments. In the books central chapters, Nelson identifies three transformative claims introduced into European political theory by the Hebrew revival: the argument that republics are the only legitimate regimes; the idea that the state should coercively maintain an egalitarian distribution of property; and the belief that a godly republic would tolerate religious diversity. One major consequence of Nelsons work is that the revolutionary politics of John Milton, James Harrington, and Thomas Hobbes appear in a brand-new light. Nelson demonstrates that central features of modern political thought emerged from an attempt to emulate a constitution designed by God. This paradox, a reminder that while we may live in a secular age, we owe our politics to an age of religious fervor, in turn illuminates fault lines in contemporary political discourse.

NERGIS CANEFE.
The Jewish diaspora as a paradigm: Politics, religion and belonging.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 400 p. The Jewish diaspora as a paradigm: Politics, religion and belonging. It is often suggested that all of the constituent groups of the Jewish Diaspora incorporated histories of persecutions and forced expulsions into their narratives of identity, even before the Holocaust and the foundation of the State of Israel in the 20th century. Is there indeed something unusual about the ?homeland-diaspora paradigm? as the phenomenon finds its embodiment in the Jewish context? Or does the Jewish Diaspora constitute a paradigmatic case for Diaspora Studies in general? Being rendered stateless and having a religion and cultural/ethnic identity that one can ?carry along? as one wanders from place to place--these appear to be the quintessential conditions for the making of the Jewish diasporic identity. Yet, these qualifiers also constitute a generic framework for diasporic existence of many other groups. If so, what is unique and what is comparable about the forced expulsions and persecutions throughout the centuries that resulted in substantial shift of the centers of Jewish life from Judea and Babylonia to the Ottoman Middle East, Europe, Asia, and finally the Americas? This edited volume is an attempt to answer these questions in a comparative context. It is a compilation of articles written by a group of scholars coming from different disciplines and yet all with a keen investment in Jewish and Diaspora Studies. JUDAICA Jewish culture Political history.

Neturei Karta
[ANTI ZIONIST POSTER] SHUMU SHAMIM
No Date (Mid 20th Century) . 1st edition. Large poster, ca. 42 x 67 cm. In Hebrew. Anti Zionist poster by the Neturei Karta (Ha-Eidah ha-Hareidit), group of ultra-orthodox, mainly in Jerusalem, who regard the establishment of a secular Jewish state in Erez Israel as a sin and a denial of God, and therefore do not recognize the State of Israel. Their name, which is Aramaic for "guardians of the City, " derives from a passage in the Jerusalem Talmud (Hag. 76: 3) stating that religious scholars are the guardians and defenders of the city. Neturei Karta broke away from Agudat Israel in 1935, when the latter attempted to restrain extremist demands for an independent ultra-Orthodox Jerusalem community completely separate from the rest of the Zionist community. The group first adopted the name Hevrat ha-Hayyim, after Rabbi Joseph Hayyim Sonnenfeld. It aimed at creating "a circle free from the influence of the contemporary spirit and its fallacious opinions, " and a condition of membership was "the education of sons and daughters in the traditional Jewish manner, without any change (girls' schools which teach Hebrew do not provide education in the traditional Jewish manner). " The last phrase alluded to Agudat Israel's Bet Ya'akov girls' schools, where the language of instruction is Hebrew. Large poster, age staining, creased and split on folds with archival repairs to the rear. Good Condition thus. (Zion2-3-1)
