‎"Le livre de Ravage est une reconstitution habile de la mentalité des premiers Rothschild." (Jean Bouvier, Les Rothschild) — "Écrite pour le grand public, cette monographie est dépourvue de tout appareil critique, d'indications de sources et de toute bibliographie. Cependant, elle est bien renseignée, traitée avec intelligence, écrite d'une façon alerte, et l'auteur n'a pas donné dans le genre de l'« histoire romancée ». Il est vrai qu'il est peu de romans aussi amusants que l'histoire toute nue de la famille Rothschild. Cependant, son ascension a été, tout d'abord, moins rapide qu'on ne se l'imagine souvent. Le père, Meyer Rothschild, dans les trente années qui ont précédé la Révolution française, n'a vécu que d'une vie relativement médiocre dans le ghetto de Francfort. Ce sont les années troublées de la Révolution et de l'Empire qui ont décidé de la fortune de la famille, en lui permettant de gérer les intérêts financiers du fameux landgrave de Hesse-Cassel, Guillaume IX, qui avait été obligé de fuir devant les armées françaises. L'un des fils de Meyer, Nathan, doué d'un véritable génie pour les affaires, part en Angleterre, y fait valoir la fortune du prince, paye les cotonnades anglaises avec les effets de Guillaume sur Londres, crée toute une organisation de contrebande au moment du Blocus continental ; puis, ayant acquis les stocks d'or de la Compagnie des Indes, il finance les campagnes de Wellington en Espagne. Aussi, lorsque Meyer meurt, en 1812, l'avenir de sa maison est assuré. A l'époque de la Restauration, les cinq frères Rothschild disposent de tous les grands emprunts d'États. Le plus remarquable est Nathan, de Londres ; mais James, à Paris, et Salomon, à Vienne, ont aussi une réelle valeur. Anoblis en 1817, barons en 1822, les Rothschild constituent le type de l'aristocratie financière. Ils ont été puissamment servis par les événements politiques. Après 1830, ils mettent à profit les progrès du capitalisme et jouent un rôle de premier plan dans la construction des chemins de fer. Cependant, l'auteur considère qu'après la mort de Nathan, le géant de la famille, en 1836, les Rothschild ne font plus que maintenir leur situation acquise. Puis, après 1880, c'est la décadence, la nouvelle génération n'ayant plus la passion, ni même le goût des affaires. Sous le Second Empire, la maison Rothschild a dû engager une lutte très dure contre de nouveaux venus et surtout contre les Pereire, qui à la fin furent vaincus. Mais la banque tombe entre les mains de grandes sociétés par action et se spécialise de plus en plus dans les affaires industrielles. M. Ravage passe un peu vite sur ces questions et, d'une façon générale, laisse trop de côté l'histoire des faits économiques. Par contre, tout l'aspect psychologique du sujet a été traité avec une louable finesse." (Henri Sée, Revue historique, 1932)‎

Hebrew literature made the transition to print in Italian print houses, most of which were owned by Christians. These became lively meeting places for Christian scholars, rabbis, and the many converts from Judaism who were employed as editors and censors. Raz-Krakotzkin examines the principles and practices of ecclesiastical censorship that were established in the second half of the sixteenth century as a part of this process. The book examines the development of censorship as part of the institutionalization of new measures of control over literature in this period, suggesting that we view surveillance of Hebrew literature not only as a measure directed against the Jews but also as a part of the rise of Hebraist discourse and therefore as a means of integrating Jewish literature into the Christian canon. On another level, The Censor, the Editor, and the Text explores the implications of censorship in relation to other agents that participated in the preparation of texts for publishing--authors, publishers, editors, and readers. The censorship imposed upon the Jews had a definite impact on Hebrew literature, but it hardly denied its reading, in fact confirming the right of the Jews to possess and use most of their literature.
