' With frontispiece of the synagogue in Mainz. Salomon Benjamin Salfeld (18431926) , German rabbi and historian. In 1880 Siegmund Salfeld became a rabbi of the Jewish community in Mainz, in the then Archduchy of Hessen. The Salfeld family lived across the street from the archduke's palace, in the same building as the community's Hebrew school. It was in Mainz that Siegmund Salfeld wrote his most recognized work, Das Martyrologium des Nürnberger Memorbuches, which was published in 1898. This was a scholarly work that focused not only on the book referenced in the title, but also on the Jews of Nuremberg and Germany during the Middle Ages. Salfeld also taught at both the Hebrew school and the city Gymnasium, and was a member of the local school board. Book of the wars of the Lord; containing the polemics of the Karaite Salmon ben Yeruhim against Saadia Gaon. The Book of the Wars of YHWH remained in manuscript until it was published together with a commentary by Israel Davidson under the title 'The Books of the Wars of the Lord', New York, 1934. Salmon Ben Jeroham (Sulaym ibn Ruhaym; tenth century) , Karaite polemicist and writer, a fervent spokesman for the Mourners of Zion (Avlei Zion) , a native of Erez Israel or Iraq. According to Karaite tradition, he was the teacher of Saadiah Gaon, an impossibility since Salmon was much the younger man of the two. However, the tradition may possibly reflect some actual personal conflict between them, which could partially explain Salmon's extreme hatred of Saadiah. Salmon's principal work, Milhamot Adonai, written in Hebrew, is a rhymed attack on the Rabbanites and on Saadiah. Even for an age characterized by abusive polemics, the language of the book is unusually vehement, and the author treats Saadiah more as a personal enemy than a theological adversary. In his subject matter, Salmon merely repeats the arguments of older Karaite polemicists, but the violent language and quasi-poetic form are all his own. If the hypothesis that Salmon is the same person as Ibn al-Sakawayh is correct, Saadiah refuted his attacks in a special work, only fragments of which remain. (EJ 2008) Subjects: (880-06) Karaites. Solomon ben Jeroham was a Karaite exegete and controversialist; flourished at Jerusalem between 940 and 960. He was considered one of the greatest authorities among the Karaites, by whom he is called 'the Wise' ('ha-Hakam')
His commentary on the Psalms breathes a deep hatred of all foreign nations; and he repeatedly denounces the study of secular subjects. He would not allow the Karaites to study even foreign languages, still less philosophical works. The theories of Euclid and Ptolemy were, in his opinion, contrary to the teachings of the Law. - 1906 JE. The editor, Lawrence Marwick, was head of the Hebraic section of the Library of Congress for thirty years, and served for 17 years as adjunct professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learning in Philadelphia and taught courses in Semitic languages and Israeli literature at New York University. Title translates roughly to "God's Voice From The Fire: A Speech Given in The New Israelite Temple Honoring the Best of the School Teachers and Teachers Lost in the Fire. " Gotthold (1784-1862) was a German Jewish rabbi, politician, and bible translator. He was the first Jew to translate the complete Old Testament into High German, following in the footsteps of Moses Mendelssohn. He also preached at the Hamburg Temple. This speech addresses The Great fire of Hamburg, which began early on May 5, 1842, in Deichstrasse and burned until the morning of May 8, destroying about one third of the buildings in the Altstadt. It killed 51 people and destroyed 1, 700 residences and several important public buildings, necessitating major civic rebuilding and prompting infrastructure improvements. The heavy demand on insurance companies led to the establishment of reinsurance. The Neuen Israelitischen Tempel (aka, the Hamburg Temple) was the first permanent Reform synagogue and the first ever to have a Reform prayer rite. It operated in Hamburg (Germany) from 1818 to 1938 (Wikipedia). SUBJECTS: Jewish sermons -- Germany. Title translates as: History of Roman rule in Judea and the destruction of Jerusalem. This tome on the history of Judea under Roman rule is a translation done by Ludwig Eichler from the French edition published in 1846: "Histoire de la Domination Romaine en Judée et de la Ruine de Jérusalem". The author, Joseph Salvador, was a French historian; born at Montpellier Jan. 5, 1796; died March 17, 1873, at Versailles; buried, at his own request, in the Protestant cemetery of Le Vigan, near Montpellier, in his brother's family vault, the rabbi of Nîmes officiating. Salvador's paternal ancestors, who, according to family traditions, were descendants of the Maccabees, the saviors of Israelthe name "Salvador" meaning "savior"emigrated from Africa to Spain in the ninth century, and fled from the latter country, to escape the Inquisition, in the fifteenth century, finding a refuge in France. (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia. ) He studied medicine, but devoted his life to writing histories; in his work on the fall of Jerusalem Salvador deals with his subject from the point of view of universal history, and regards the destruction of the Temple as a necessary stage in the spread among the peoples of what he would call the Christian form of Judaism. 1st edition. Original stapled mimeograph sheets, 4to (large, European Legal size) , 17 single sided leaves. Title translates as Final Report for 1939-40 and Closing Rerport. Summary report of activities in 1936-41, with primary focus on the work 1939-41 of this Swiss Spanish Civil War refugee assistance organization, whose name translates to, Samaritan Help Basle. It includes reports of their work with Basque children and other refugees of the Spanish Civil War in Switzlernad, as well as assistance to refugees still in Madrid and South France. The organizations primary focus appears to have been on clothing. Includes financial summaries as well. We could find only one reference to this organization or its publication, in the archives of the Basle City Government. Exceedingly rare. Light toning, Very Good Condition. (Holo2-138-18)

Lazare Saminsky was a famous Russian-Jewish composer and conductor. While a student in St. Petersburg, he founded the Society for Jewish Folk. After emigrating to the United States in 1920, he became a board member of the International Composers Guild and music director of Temple Emanu-El Synagogue in New York. He composed the pieces for sale here on behalf of Temple Emanu-El. Minor shelf wear. Very Good Condition. (MUSIC-6-1)
