‎Steinerne Zeugen der Vergangeneit. Der jüdische Friedhof in Kronberg. Eine Dokumentation im Gedenken der Zerstörung jüdischer Kultur. Hrsg. von der Stadt Kronberg u. Sigrid Hintze. Geleitwort von Chaim Lipschitz. (Mit 42 Grabstein-Abb. u. einem Lageplan. ) -‎

‎Darmstadt: Eduard Roether 1993. 128 Ss. 8°. Illustr. Kt.‎

‎ERSTE AUSGABE. (S. 11). Mit Registern der Bibel-, Talmud- und Midraschstellen, Literaturverzeichnis und zwei Namenslisten.‎

‎Szold, Benjamin, compiler. translated by Marcus Jastrow.‎

‎SONGS AND PRAYERS AND MEDITATIONS FOR DIVINE SERVICES OF ISRAELITES.‎

‎Leather; small 8vo. Iv, 104, vi, 590 pages. Embossed boards; raised bands; gilt titles; burgundy endpapers. Title page on verso: "Abodath Yisrael (in Hebrew) : Israelitish Prayer Book for all the Public Services of the Year. " English and Hebrew on facing pages. Appendix page 579 ff. Benjamin Szold was a Hungarian-born rabbi who became rabbi to Congregation Oheb Shalom in Baltimore. "Oheb Shalom was then on the verge of becoming Reform, but Szold led it to a Judaism which allowed for innovations in ritual practice, but not in basic tenets. He recognized and employed the educational potential of the regular Sabbath sermon. He introduced his own prayer book, Avodat Yisrael (1867) , to replace the previously used Minhag Amerikah (1857) by I. M. Wise, and the traditional siddur. The Avodat Yisrael was widely adopted by congregations throughout the country. Under Szold's leadership Oheb Shalom became one of the foremost American congregations. " (Gladys Rosen, EJ) Marcus Jastrow was a Polish-born rabbi and author who emigrated to the United States and became rabbi to Rodeph Shalom, a congregation in Philadelphia largely composed of German immigrants. He introduced some reforms, such as the use of an organ and of this prayer book; however; he opposed radical reform and emerged as one of the leaders of the historical school, which developed into Conservative Judaism. (EJ) "The authors of the American prayer-books were extremely radical in the abridgment of the Hebrew text and in eliminating all references to a personal Messiah, the restoration, and the resurrection of the dead, and in place of "resurrection, " "immortality" was sometimes substituted. " (JE) Singerman 2399; Deinard 946. SUBJECT: Jewish hymns. Hymns, English. OCLC lists 3 copies worldwide (NY Public Library, Union Theological Seminary, JNUL) . Hebrew-side title page in facsimile only. Edgeworn; front cover and backstrip absent; back cover detached but present. Ex-library with minimal markings. Otherwise, good condition. (AMR-1-6)‎

‎SZPILMAN (Wladyslaw).‎

‎Szyk, Arthur [Artur]‎

‎INK & BLOOD: A BOOK OF DRAWINGS [INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY SZYK, LIMITED EDITION]‎

‎4to ; 1st edition. Full leather in original magenta slipcase decorated in pattered orange paper mâché, matching the endpapers. Folio, 19 text pages + 74 single-sided plate leaves. Gilded lettering on the spine and black pebbled leather boards. Gilded top edge. Patterned endpapers. One of 1000 limited edition copies inscribed by the artist on the front colophon. Opens with a tipped in color frontis image of Szyk himself, surrounded by caricatures of Hitler, Goebbels, Göring, Himmler, General Franco, Hideki Tojo, and a trash can with the heads of Mussolini, Petain, and Pierre Laval. Ink and Blood is one of Szyk's most famous works. The forward was written by American novelist Maxwell Struthers Burt, with publication by the Heritage Press, an imprint of George Macy Companies. The work includes 70 monochrome and 5 tipped-in color reproductions of anti-Axis and anti-Nazi cartoons, with whimsical namesincluding: The Superkraut, The Great Fritz, Schicklgruber-Lohengrin, Hitler's Birthday in Tokyo, and The Cheerful Idiots. "Weapons of War" was how Arthur Szyk described his creations. In order to influence American opinion against the Nazis, he was dispatched from London to the United States in 1939. But his most famous works, such as Ink & Blood and the well-known Szyk Passover Haggadah, were produced by him after the war. Some fading to slipcase, with wear at open foot. Spine rubbed as often found, but gilt lettering remains sharp and bright. Small stain to margins of one monochrome plate, not affecting image; occasional light margin spotting in a few places. Leather boards, including corners, as well as batik orange endpapers and all text and illustration pages are clean and sharp and gorgeous. An attractive copy. (ART-28-5-ECC)‎

‎Szyk, Arthur [Artur]; Emergency Committee to Save the Jewish People of Europe; American League for a Free Palestine‎

‎[FOUR SETS OF STAMPS DESIGNED BY ARTHUR SZYK, WITH RELATED LETTER AND PAMPHLETS, SIX ITEMS TOTAL].‎

‎1st edition. A group of six items in total, including the following: 1) "They must not die: Save human lives," a brochure containing the Committee's plan of action (rescuing Jews from Axis-controlled countries and aiding those who have already escaped). The back cover states, "The Emergency Committee welcomes this opportunity to reproduce the inspiring creations of the virile pen and the creative heart of Arthur Szyk, in the form of Poster Stamps. The Committee hopes that generous support in contributions for and distributions of these Poster Stamps, will be forthcoming from the American people, to enable it to carry on its emergency mission for the rescue of some four million martyred humans. Let it not be said that the two million who have been exterminated have died in vain..." Inside are a folded sheet of Szyk’s 5 separate designs showing four scenes of the oppressed Jews of Europe–and, famously, one defiant image of a British Soldier, his machine gun raised in anger, holding a fallen elderly Jewish man. The sheets of stamps inside have adhered together, and we have not tried to separate them, but 2 rows of all five designs are visible. 2) There is a six-panel brochure similarly tilted: “The Shall Not Die - Save Human Lives - They Must Not Die,” advertising two other types of stamps: "Help us survive," showing Jewish men breaking away from a swastika made of barbed wire, and a set depicting the Four Freedoms.3) A full sheet of Szyk’s well-known full-color depictions, on stamps, of the 4 American freedoms celebrated by FDR in his famous Jan 1941 Speech (Of Speech, Of Religion, From Want, From Fear) 4) A full sheet of Szyk’s “Help Us Survive” stamps (adhered together where the sheet was naturally folded in half along the perferations), described in the above brochure, showing a middle aged and older Jewish man fleeing a barbed-wire swastika. 5) A brochure from the American League for a Free Palestine, issued in 1945, titled "There were 4 sons," with nine pages of text updating the story of the four sons from the Passover parable to meet the contemporary situation, followed by four sheets of stamps (one sheet in green, one in purple, one in orange, one in brown) by Szyk depicting the Wise Son from the Hagadah, here dressed as a soldier, with the slogan "For a Free Palestine." This booklet is in very good condition.6) Accompanying these items is a printed cover letter, partly toned, dated September 1944, urging the recipient to use the stamps on the backs of envelopes to draw attention to the ongoing Holocaust, and asking for donations to support the Committee's work. "The Emergency Committee welcomes this opportunity to reproduce the inspiring creations of the virile pen and the creative heart of Arthur Szyk, in the form of Poster Stamps. The Committee hopes that generous support in contributions for and distributions of these Poster Stamps, will be forthcoming from the American people, to enable it to carry on its emergency mission for the rescue of some four million martyred humans. Let it not be said that the two million who have been exterminated have died in vain. The grim stories of Nazi atrocities are true and they cannot be dismissed like a bad dream. Such crimes are a challenge to all civilized persons…" (from the inside back cover of “They Must Not Die: Save Human Lives”). In two cases, the stamps have stuck together because of the glue on the rear, otherwise Very Good Condition, all very displayable. Rare Szyk items (ART-28-10-ECC)‎
