‎Publishers cloth. 8vo. 372, [2] pages. 24 cm. First edition. In Yiddish. Bibliotek fun YIVO. English title page: “The Pogroms in the Ukraine in 1919.” Continuation of the work “Antisemitizm un pogromen in Ukraine, 1917-1918” published 1923. A detailed scholarly study of the terrible Ukrainian pogroms in 1919 written by “Elias Tcherikower (1881–1943) , historian of Russian Jewish life and anti-Jewish violence. …The 1919 Bolshevik suppression of Jewish autonomy and the simultaneous wave of violence and mass murder against Ukrainian Jewish communities by nationalist, White, and other forces (‘the Ukrainian pogroms’) strongly shaped Tsherikover’s subsequent scholarly career. He helped compile an essential collection of documents and testimonies on Jewish autonomy and its dissolution (Di idishe oytonomie un der natsyonaler secretariat in Ukraine; 1920) and later edited a related volume of documents and memoirs on revolutionary-era Jewish life, In der tkufe fun revolutsye (Berlin, 1924) . From 1919, Tsherikover devoted himself especially to gathering evidence about pogroms. By the time he left Russia for Berlin via Kovne/Kaunas in 1921, he had compiled a massive archive (now housed at YIVO) . Settling in Berlin, he began a massive scholarly project on pogroms with other Jewish scholars and activists, including Simon Dubnow, Yosef Schechtman, Nokhem Shtif, Jakob Lestschinsky, and N. Gergel. Tsherikover himself wrote two historical studies on pogroms: Antisemitizm un pogromen in Ukraine, 1917–1918 (published in Yiddish and Russian, 1923) and Di Ukrainer pogromen in 1919, published posthumously (1965) . Tsherikover and his archive also played an important role in the 1926–1927 Paris trial of Shalom Schwarzbard. ” (YIVO Encyclopedia; Tsherikover, Elye) . ‎Tegel Susan‎

‎Jew Suss: Life, Legend, Fiction, Film‎

‎8vo, Hardcover in dj. 281pp. Cloth. Joseph Suss Oppenheimer (1698-1738), better known as Jew Suss, was a court Jew, who advised the Duke of Wurttemberg. Clever and handsome, even ostentatious, he fitted easily into court life, despite his humble origins. However, his unpopular economic policies made him enemies and when the Duke died suddenly Suss was arrested, convicted of 'destestable abuses' and exectued in Stuttgart in an iron cage. His spectacular rise and fall inspired a media outpouring in the eighteenth century and he has been much written about subsequently. In the twentieth century two films were made about him, one British in 1934, the other German in 1940. Goebbels took an active interest in the latter. After the war its director, Veit Harlan, was tried for Crimes against Humanity for having made the film. Despite his acquittal, the film's association with the Holocaust remains controversial to this day. For almost three centuries the life of Jew Suss has been adapted, distorted and transformed. This book tells the story of these transformations.‎

‎Teitelbaum, Eli‎

‎Thoughts on the Haggadah‎

‎Velobound. 4to. 82 pages. 29 cm. Only edition. In English and Hebrew. Rabbi Eli Teitelbaum grew up in Queens, the son of Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Teitelbaum, and later moved to the Boro Park section of Brooklyn. Teitelbaum founded and ran Camp S’dei Chemed International summer camp in Israel. Rabbi Eli Teitelbaum, an ultra-Orthodox educator and innovator, wrote this Haggadah after years of discussions with his students: “One must realize that many of their questions can probably be found in the Meforshim, and a variety of answers can be found in all four different parts of Torah, be it p’shat, remez, drush and sod. However, I’ve tried my best to answer them in the simplest manner possible in order to show them that their questions can be answered even on the very basic level. ” (From the Preface) . Subjects: Passover - Juvenile literature. Haggadah - Commentaries. OCLC lists 7 copies worldwide. Light wear to covers, with bottom right corner bumped. ‎Temchin, Michael‎

‎THE WITCH DOCTOR: MEMOIRS OF A PARTISAN‎

‎Original stiff wrappers . 8vo. 184 pages. 22 cm. First edition. This memoir relates the wartime experiences of Jewish partisan Doctor Michael Temchin. “Dr. Temchin, nicknamed 'Znachor' (Witch Doctor) was at first the commander of the partisan unit of A. L. (Armja Ludowa) , the leftist underground organization in Poland, and after became chief of the medical services of the partisans. The partisan unit under the leadership of Dr. Temchin consisted of Jews and non-Jews, and was active in the area of Krasznik (Lublin district) . The Jewish and Polish partisans planned to rescue Jews in the ghetto of Krasznik before they were taken onto the crematoria, and waited for a sign from the ghetto to start the attack on the little town and liberate the Jews. The ghetto representatives kept postponing their decision to act. The partisans warned them that it might soon be too late, but the inhabitants of the ghetto were in no hurry to call for help from the partisans. A possible reason for their reluctance may have been the fact that they knew of the mass murders of Jews in the partisan units, carried out by Polish fascist groups, living in the woods. Of course the partisans did not want to attack without the consent of those helpless Jews living within the walls. The entire ghetto was wiped out in one night, and only a few succeeded in escaping to the partisans. ” (In the book The Jewish Partisans; Part 2, page 210) “Among the most famous Polish partisans was Major 'Znachor' (Dr. Michael Temchin) . General Rola-Zhimierski, the commander of the A. L. Declared at a meeting of the Polish National Assembly on the 2nd of January 1946: ‘Jewish soldiers fought against the occupation forces with much devotion and courage. They were valiant fighters and very often great heroes; ’ and in his letter to the Organization of Jewish Partisans (F. P. O. ) , the general wrote: ‘Among the Jews who remained alive there were thousands who went into the woods to fight with arms, and fought together with their Polish partisan comrades against the common enemy. ” (M. Kahanovitch, The War of the Jewish Partisans in Eastern Europe; pages 250, 252) Subjects: Jews - Poland - Biography. Jewish physicians - Poland - Biography. ‎Temple Emanu-El, (James Koppel Gutheim) [Felix Adler]‎

‎HYMNS FOR DIVINE SERVICE IN THE TEMPLE EMANU-EL‎

‎8vo; 1st Edition. Modern Cloth, all edges gilt. 12mo. 71 pages ; 18 cm. Contains what are almost certainly the first published works of Felix Adler (at 20 years old), founder of the Ethical Culture Movement. James Koppel Gutheim (1817-1886) was the rabbi of Congregation Shangarai Chasset of New Orleans. He was an influential figure in New Orleans, and served as president of the New Orleans Board of Education. “In 1863… he refused to take the oath of allegiance to the Union after New Orleans was recaptured. He fled New Orleans, and served as rabbi to Jewish congregations in Montgomery, Alabama, and Columbus, Georgia. Gutheim returned to New Orleans after the Civil War, to serve as Shangarai Chasset's rabbi, but left to serve in New York’s Temple Emanuel in 1868. In 1872 he once again returned to New Orleans to become minister of the New Orleans Temple Sinai, where he preached until his death.” (Wikipedia, 2016) This hymnal was compiled while Gutheim served at Temple Emanu-el in New York, where Felix Adler’s father, Samuel Adler, had been the Head Rabbi since 1857. At the time, Emanu-El “was the leading Reform congregation in the US.” (Wikipedia, 2016) Most of the 37 hymnals are by Gutheim, but 6 (including 4 original compositions) are by Felix Adler, Samuel Adler’s son. Felix Adler (1851-1933) would later found the Ethical Culture movement. While training to become a Rabbi in Heidelberg from 1871-1873 he was strongly influenced by neo-Katianism notions that one cannot prove or disprove the existence of a deity or immortality, and that morality can be established independently of theology. Giving up his Rabbinic studies, Adler founded the Ethical Culture Society in 1877 and the Workingman’s School (a free elementary school, which would become the Ethical Culture School) in 1878. The four original hymns, written before Adler rejected the notion of a Jewish God, are religious. They also show Adler’s esteem for Education. In “School Hymn,” he writes, “But what flower is so fragrant, so sweet and so fair/As the flower of truth blooming here—.” OCLC lists 9 copies worldwide. SUBJECT(S): Jewish hymns. Very good+ condition. (AMR-47-15-D)‎

‎Temple, William; Rochester, Ernest Henry Lamb‎

‎NAZI MASSACRES OF THE JEWS & OTHERS : SOME PRACTICAL PROPOSALS FOR IMMEDIATE RESCUE MADE BY THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY AND LORD ROCHESTER IN SPEECHES ON MARCH 23RD 1943 IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS‎

‎1st Edition. Original Paper Wrappers. 8vo. [16] pages ; 19 cm. In English. In this historic speech, Temple concludes, “My chief protest is against procrastination of any kind… The Jews are being slaughtered at the rate of tens of thousands a day on many days. We know that what we can do is small compared with the magnitude of the problem, but we cannot rest so long as there is any sense among us that we are not doing all that might be done. We have discussed the matter on the footing we are not responsible for this great evil… but it is always true that the obligations of decent men are decided for them by contingencies which they did not themselves create… We stand at the bar of history, of humanity, and of God. ” Holocaust-era speeches by the Archbishop of Canterbury and Lord Rochester made to the House of Lords outlining ongoing atrocities and calling for the British government to approach the problem of resettling Jewish refugees with more urgency. “William Temple (1881–1944) was a bishop in the Church of England. He served as Bishop of Manchester (1921–29) , Archbishop of York (1929–42) and Archbishop of Canterbury (1942–44) . A renowned teacher and preacher, Temple is perhaps best known for his 1942 book Christianity and Social Order, which set out an Anglican social theology and a vision for what would constitute a just post-war society…. Against the background of persecution of Jewish people during World War II, Temple jointly founded with Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz the Council of Christians and Jews (CCJ) to combat anti-Semitism and other forms of prejudice in Britain. In March 1943, Temple addressed the House of Lords, urging action to be taken on the atrocities being carried out by Nazi Germany. ” (Wikipedia, 2016) SUBJECT(S) : Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) . World War, 1939-1945 -- Jews -- Rescue. In the US Holocaust Museum rare book collection. Some edgewear. In about very good condition. (HOLO2-130-9)‎
