ADDRESS OF HIS EXCELLENCY MOST REVEREND RICHARD J. CUSHING, ARCHBISHOP OF BOSTON : GIVEN ON THE OCCASION OF THE EIGHTH ANNUAL DINNER OF THE MASSACHUSETTS COMMITTEE, CATHOLICS, PROTESTANTS AND JEWS, MAY 24, 1945.
1st Edition Reprint. Original Wrappers. 8vo. 11 pages ; 22 cm. Holocaust-era publication. Published with Tolerance is Not Enough, reprinted from The Pilot on May 26, 1945, which gave a glowing review of Bishop Richard Cushings speech. This is the first published speech given by Richard Cushing after he became Archbishop of Boston in 1944. He served as Archbishop of Boston from 1944 to 1970, and was created a cardinal in 1958. Cushing's main role was as fundraiser and builder of new churches, schools, and institutions. He was on good terms with practically the entire Boston elite, as he softened the traditional confrontation between the Catholic Irish and the Protestant upper-class. Cushing built useful relationships with Jews, Protestants, and institutions outside the usual Catholic community. He helped presidential candidate John F. Kennedy deflect fears of papal interference in American government if a Catholic became president. Cushing's high energy level allowed him to meet with many people all day, often giving lengthy speeches at night. DOS NAYE LEBN VOLS I-III, 1908-1911, EACH VOLUME 12 ISSUES [COMPLETE FIRST THREE VOLUMES, 36 ISSUES TOTAL]
1st edition. Mixed period and later boards. 8vo. 745 pages; 550, 16, 24, 24, 24 pages; 690 pages. 23 cm. In Yiddish. Title translates to The New Life. The complete first three years of this important Yiddish monthly. Zhitlowsky, an immigrant socialist revolutionary, sought to synthesize socialism with nationalism as early as 1883. He demanded for Jews "national equal rights with all peoples" and asserted that only through the Yiddish language could the social and national revival of the Jewish people be effected. He maintained that one could remain identified with the Jewish nationality even if abandoning the Jewish religion. He urged the Jewish masses to participate in the class struggle as a national unit. Alone among the cosmopolitan Jewish socialists he favored national socialism. In 1897 he began publishing philosophical studies in Jewish history and a comprehensive program of action which later appeared in book form as Pisma o starom I novom yevreystvie ("Letters on Old and Modern Judaism, " 1907) . His main thesis was that national consciousness consists mainly of spiritual-cultural determinants and that these national characteristics can be maintained by the Jews in the future in the lands of their dispersion, just as they have survived the lack of territory or unity of language since the end of the second commonwealth. After emancipation of the individual the Jews as a group should be granted national self-government within the framework of the state along with other national minorities. His secularization of the national idea as opposed to those who saw the essence of Judaism in religion, and his optimistic view of the future of Judaism in the Diaspora, were the main underpinnings of his insistence on national cultural autonomy. Zhitlowsky was "in favor of the centrality of Yiddish in the national Jewish experience and labored toward the recognition of that language, and of those who lived out their lives in it, as one of the several cultural linguistic communities of Eastern Europe, and of the Western world as a whole" (Isaac Levitas, et al, in EJ) . Includes Zhitlowskys original, first volume, 16 page prologue entitled This program and the dissemination of the monograph The New Life. LA BIOGRAPHIE D'ADOLPH CREMIEUX, SENATEUR DE FRANCE ET PRESIDENT DE L'ALLIANCE ISRAELITE UNIVERSELLE = (HAYE KARMIYAH)
1st Edition. Original Boards. 12mo. [xix], 85 pages. 18cm. In Hebrew with French Title Page. Title translates in English as, The Biography of Adolphe Crémieux, French Senator and President of the Alliance Israelite Universelle. Adolphe Crémieux (1796 1880) was a French-Jewish lawyer and statesman and staunch defender of the human rights of the Jews of France
From 1834 until his death, Crémieux served as vice-president of the Consistoire Central des Israélites de France (Central Consistory of the Jews of France) , the administrative agency for all French Jews. On 24 February 1848 he was chosen by the Republicans as a member of the provisional government, and as minister of justice he secured the decrees abolishing the death penalty for political offenses, and making the office of judge immovable. That same year he was instrumental in declaring an end to slavery in all French Colonies, for which some have called him the French Abraham Lincoln. When the conflict between the Republicans and Socialists broke out, he resigned office but continued to sit in the constituent assembly. At first he supported Louis Napoleon, but when he discovered the prince's imperial ambitions he broke with him
Crémieux did much to better the condition of the Jews. In 1827, he advocated the repeal of the More judaico, legislation stigmatizing the Jews left over from pre-revolutionary France
While in the government of the national defence, he secured full citizenship for the Jews in French-ruled Algeria, through the Crémieux Decree
The decree allowed for native Jews to become French citizens while Muslim Arabs and Berbers were excluded and remained under the second-class indigenous status outlined in the Code de l'Indigénat... HA-TSOFEH LE-VET YISRAEL
Original Boards. 8vo, [xv], 145 pages, portrait. In Hebrew. SUBJECT (S) ; Satire, Hebrew. Sacrifice -- Judaism. Purity, Ritual -- Judaism. Erter, Isaac. Other Titles: Dr. Isaak Erter's gesammelte Schriften. Erter (1791-1851) was a Hebrew satirist of the Haskalah. Born in Koniuszek near Przemysl, Erter, during the earlier part of his life, lived in various places including Lvov, where he, together with a group of young maskilim, was excommunicated in 1816 by Rabbi Jacob Ornstein; Budapest, where he studied medicine; and Brody, then an important commercial and cultural center for Galician Jewry, where he settled in 1831 and remained for the rest of his life. In addition to his literary work, Erter was also active communally among Haskalah circles, showing special interest in the plans for a reform of contemporary Jewish society. Toward the end of his life, he collaborated with his friend Y. H. Schorr in the early stages of the founding of He-Halutz, a Hebrew periodical dedicated to the study of Judaica in the spirit of religious reform, and distinguished by a boldly critical treatment of problems relating to Jewish tradition. Erter's only book, Ha-Zofeh le-Veit Yisrael, consists of five satires, all of which had been published separately with the addition of some personal correspondence relevant to his literary career. Noteworthy among the satires are the following: Hasidut ve-Hokhmah, Tashlikh, and Gilgul Nefesh. Written in the form of epistles, several of the satires seem to have been modeled on the work of Lucian, the second-century Greek satirist, whose writings were very popular in European Rationalist literature and which Erter came to know in Wieland's German translation. Lucian's satiric and ironic treatment of Greek mythology and of ignorant and boorish antiquity during its decline was adapted by Erter in his fight against the traditionalist Jewish society of his day. The recurring character a type of "persona satirae" "the watchman of the House of Israel, " has its source in the prophet-castigator of Ezekiel 3: 17; by virtue of the authority of the biblical figure, Erter's watchman reviews the reality of Jewish society in Galicia and Poland in the first half of the 19th century. In this narrative, written in an autobiographical manner, the "observer" gathers evidence and confronts the reader with confessions of figures belonging to an imaginary, fanciful world, confessions made in a dream state or after death. Having endowed them with a keen rhetoric ability, Erter enables these figures to explain their character and experience by ironic exaggeration, coupled with the idealistic pathos characteristic of the Haskalah movement (Werses in EJ, 2007) . OCLC lists 17 copies worldwide. Ex-library with usual markings. With bookplate and photograph of Erter. Some foxing but overall in very good condition. (Rab-40-28A) xx
