‎OYF DI HURVES FUN MAYN HEYM (HURBN SHEDLETS) .‎

‎First edition. Later wrappers, 8vo. 260 pages. 21 cm. In Yiddish. Title translates to "On the Ruins of My Home (The Destruction of Siedlce) . Until the Second World War, like many other cities in Europe, Siedlce had a significant Jewish population. At some times, indeed, Jews were the majority of its population. In 1939, Jews constituted some 37% of the town's population. In March 1941 - still before the formal decision to implement the "Final Solution" which meant the wholesale extermination of the Jews - German Orpo battalions rampaged for three days in Siedlce, killing many of its Jewish inhabitants. In August of the same year the Jews were forced into the new Siedlce Ghetto. It consisted of several small city blocks and over a dozen walkable streets in the city centre. On 1 October 1941 the ghetto was completely cut off from the outside world. In August 1942 some 10, 000 Siedlce Jews were deported to Treblinka and murdered there together with a similar number of Jews from three nearby transit ghettos: in Losice, holding local Jews and families from Huszlew, Olszanka, and Swiniarów; in Sarnaki, with Jews from Górki, Kornica, Lysów; and the third transit ghetto with prisoners from Mordy, Krzesk-Królowa Niwa, Przesmyki, Stok Ruski, and Tarków. The town's remaining Jews imprisoned at the "little ghetto" were sent off to extermination on November 25, 1942. SUBJECTS: Jews -- Poland -- Siedlce. Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) -- Poland -- Siedlce. Jews. Pages are warped, dampstains to outer pages and top of some leaves. Overall Fair Condition, but complete and solid. (YID-27-18)‎

‎SEDER TEFILAH KE-FI MINHAG ITALIA: FORMULARIO DELLE ORAZIONI DEGLI ISRAELITI‎

‎Later Blue Boards with Original Paper Wrappers bound inside. 8vo. 104 pages; 19 cm. In Hebrew with title page in Italian. Title translates to “Form of the Prayers According to the Italian Custom. ” “The customs and religious rites of the Italian-rite Jews can be seen as a bridge between the Ashkenazi and Sephardi traditions, showing similarities to both; they are closer still to the customs of the Romaniotes (native Greek Jews) . A sub-division is recognised between minhag Bene Romi, practiced in Rome, and minhag Italiani, practised in northern cities such as Turin, though the two rites are generally close. In matters of religious law, Italian-rite Jews generally follow the same rules as the Sephardim, in that they accept the authority of Isaac Alfasi and the Shulchan Aruch as opposed to the Ashkenazi customs codified by Moses Isserles (the Rema) . However their liturgy is different from that of both of these groups. One reason for this may be that Italy was the main centre of early Jewish printing, enabling Italian Jews to preserve their own traditions when most other communities had to opt for a standard ‘Sephardi’ or ‘Ashkenazi’ prayer-book. It is often claimed that the Italian prayer-book contains the last remnants of the Judaean/Galilaean Jewish tradition, while both the Sephardi and, to a lesser extent, the Ashkenazi rites reflect the Babylonian tradition” (Wikipedia 2017) . SUBJECT(S) : Judaism, Liturgy, Italian Jews. OCLC lists one holding worldwide (JTS) . Ex-library markings with Jewish Institutional Stamp and Bookplate. There seems to be no book which, as it were, would be quite a new and independent production, and the more one studies the literary currents of the time, the more one realises an inner connection between one book and the other. One can trace an almost interminable chain although in not a few occasions the intermediary links seem to be broken or to be missing. And yet such connections cannot be denied. Often the authors are unconscious of the fact that they are acting upon a common impulse. There may not be a direct contact or an immediate dependance of one author upon the other but one can easily observe that at a given time the very same problem is discussed by authors of various shades and various characters. ” Offprint from Jewish Studies in Memory of George A. Of vol. I. , 1864; 3d vol. , 1869-71) were in the nature of ‘university extension’ courses. Brilliantly presented, his views lost none of their scholarly thoroughness. His introductory lecture, giving his views on revelation, is especially worthy of note: ‘the genius of the people of Israel is the vehicle of revelation’—a view at once liberal and loyal, though hopelessly in opposition to the mechanical theory of revelation held to be orthodox. In these lectures, too, Geiger gave without reserve the results of his studies on the origin of Christianity, while in connection with the second series he prepared a biography of Ibn Gabirol” (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) Subjects: Judaism - History. President John Adams wrote of this literary anthology that it was "worthy to be presented by every father to every child, and deserve a place in every family. " Gomez's Jewish affiliation resonates in the book with his decision to include a selection from The History of Pope Pius V, which is the source for the "pound of flesh" incident in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. As opposed to Shakespeare's telling, in the History of Pope Pius V, it is the Jew who is the victim and the Christian who threatens him. Gomez prefaced the selection by writing: "The following subject shows that Shakespeare altered the character of Shylock, making him to be of the Jewish nation, when in reality he was not. " As Louis Harap notes (The Image of the Jew in American Literature, p. 260) , "Gomez was obviously trying to combat the effects of the Shylock stereotype. " Isaac Gomez (1768-1831) , whose great-grandfather had fled from Portugal to New York in 1703, was active in New York's Jewish community. The few early literary contributions by American Jews "was anything but impressive, but Gomez's book is worth remembering as one of American Jewry's earliest literary efforts… Gomez, both a devotee of the humanities and a committed Jew, lived comfortably ensconced in the two worlds of the Jew and the cultured American" (J. R. Marcus, United States Jewry, vol. 3, page 455) . See also Blau and Baron, The Jews of the United States, 1790-1840, Vol. II, pages 440-2. The last copy to appear at auction in the US, in 2013, sold for over $1800 (with commissions) . Foxing as expected. All endpapers present, and original period binding remains very handsome. A very good copy in outstanding period binding. (AMR-57-12)‎

The author contends here that prior to the 17th century the lingua franca of the Jews of Russia, Poland and Lithuania was the Slavic languages of their neighbors. He proves this by demonstrating that the Jewish community of the region was descended from ancient Jewish settlements in the Caucasus and Crimea, and not from the Yiddish-speaking immigrants who came from German lands much later. ‎1st Edition. Presume Original blue paper wrappers, 8vo, 111 pages; 21 cm. In Hebrew and Yiddish with the Author’s address in Nashua, NH, noted in English on the title page. Title translates as, “The Borrowed Axe: A Pointed Essay on the Song of Songs as a Critique of the State of American Judaism. ” An anti-assimilationist polemic, critical of the Jews of small town New England, including Nashua, NH, written in the form of a running commentary to the Song of Song by a Mir and Volozhin-educated immigrant to Nashua, Goldman 1148. “Harkavy was born in 1859 in Yeremichi, Minsk Province, and he studied in the yeshivot of Mir and Volozhin…. He immigrated to America in 5667 [1907]. In 5671 [1911, the year of publication] he lived with his brother in Nashua, NH, and was a teacher. Sh. Goldman [1993-1, quoted in Yosef Goldman] notes that "Harkavy's Vehu Shaul, a previously unrecorded and unrecognized contribution to the literature of anti-assimilationist polemics, was written in the form of a running commentary on the text of Song of Songs. The Yiddish title of the book is Di Gelihene Hok (The Borrowed Ax) and the commentary on each page is divided into Hebrew and Yiddish sections ... Harkavy's polemic is unique in that is speaks of the Jews in the small rural towns of New England ... Much of his polemic concerns the religious life of small Jewish communities such as Nashua ....Unlike Weinberger [who concurrently wroate about the Jews in New York] who held out some hope for the American Jewish future, Harkavy saw none” (Sh. Goldman [1993-1], 185, 188, 192) . Harkavy writes, "Having dwelt in this land for a number of years and having seen the disgraceful behavior of my people-they have torn up and stomped upon the essentials of their faith and 'there is no one to save them'-and, having considered the leadership of this people: its rabbis, ritual slaughterers, cantors, communal officials and synagogue presidents, I could no longer restrain myself. I had to make public what has weighed so heavily on my heart" (pp. 1-2, trans. In Sh. Goldman [1993-4) , 185) . Appended to this work is "a witty and vitriolic poem entitled The Clock [pp. 104-11] ... The poem, which appears in both Hebrew and Yiddish versions, employs the metaphor of the ticking clock. The hands of the clock are the rabbis of America-who are continually contending with one another" (Sh. Goldman [1993-4], 193) . Sefer ve-hu Sha'ul was positively reviewed in Ha-Mitzpah, Nr. 6, p 24. Herzl’s testimony, as well as a transcript of a question and answer session with the Zionist leader before the British Royal Commission in 1902 to discuss the Jewish Question in Europe and the Likelihood of ongoing Jewish immigration to Britain. With an introduction from Jacob De Haas, the secretary of the First Zionist Congress. In his testimony Herzl says, “The fact that there is now for the first time since Cromwell a perceptible number of our people in England is the true cause of this Commission being called together. Those who deny this are, I feel quite certain, perfectly sincere. When they cry out about Alien Immigration, they are quite unconscious of the true cause of their complaint. They feel the pain and they point to the place which hurts… But I think it right to say that the mere establishment of this Commission has created a difficulty… (The) Commission must either recommend restrictive legislation or not…. To keep out the poor oppressed Jews cannot, I believe, be successful. But if restrictive legislation is not recommended, there mere fact of this Commission having sat will give an impetus to immigration to England; it will have formed an additional notification of the desirability of England as a place for emigration.” OCLC lists 12 copies worldwide.
