Cahan edited the fifth volume of YIVOs Filologishe shriftn (Philological Studies) devoted to Yiddish folklore, which appeared posthumously in 1938, dedicated to his memory. - YIVO Encyclopedia. The most enthusiastic and prolific zamlers were those who had been recruited by the Ethnographic Commission, known after 1930 as the Folklore Commission. In its first year, this part of the institute operated under the joint sponsorship of the An-ski Vilna Jewish Historic-Ethnographic Society. By 1929, the members of 163 zamlerkrayzn (collectors circles) had sent more than 50, 000 copies of proverbs, folktales, and folk songs to YIVO. The analysis and publication of this material proceeded more slowly, in part because the leading folklorist, Y. L. Cahan, was living in New York. Cahans visit to Vilna in 1930 spurred work, but the fruits of the zamlers labor appeared in print only in 1938 as Yidisher folklor (Yiddish Folklore) . - YIVO Encyclopedia. Subjects: Jews - Folklore. Spine stained and rubbed, spine upper edge tattered, spine front hinge upper hinge peeling. Small sticker and several small wormholes on spine front hinge bottom edge. Ex-library copy with sticker on front inner cover, pen marks on whitepage upper edge and stamp on title-page, pages 255, 537 and 1004. Binding slightly visible between first and second whitepages. Page 33-34 bottom edge wrinkled - no damage to text. Pages yellowing and age-stained, several pages dog-eared. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare collection of all 1845 issues of one of the most important 19th century French Jewish periodicals is in good condition.

Born in Munich, Germany, Cahnman [1902-1980] was regional secretary for Bavaria of the national association of German Jewry, the Centralverein deutscher Staatsbuerger juedischen Glaubens, from 1930 to 1934. In 1933 he was arrested for a short time by the Gestapo and at the end of 1938, like many male Jews, was sent to a concentration camp. When he managed to obtain his release he went to the United States, where he studied sociology and anthropology. He then taught at several universities, being appointed professor of sociology at Rutgers University in 1961. Cahnman's contributions are chiefly in the fields of sociological theory and the sociology of the Jews. His earlier theoretical publications, written under the influence of Robert E. Polish historiography and ethnography have avoided delving into the problems of Polish-Jewish relations, probably because it was (and still is) an emotional subject, painful for some and irritating to others. The last half-century has not afforded many opportunities for a dispassionate exchange of opinions as the last war brought about the extermination of the Polish Jews and put an end to the discussion once and for all. The history of the towns and economy of Poland cannot be written without discussing the activities of Jews. Closely connected with this problem is the question of the Jew's place in the social hierarchy and consequently - mutual attitudes. This study is an attempt to present the picture of intergroup contacts as it has been preserved in people's memory. Nella prima metà dell'Ottocento, i timidi segnali di emancipazione degli ebrei visibili nelle società europee più avanzate si manifestano anche a Roma, dove per una breve stagione la repubblica si sostituisce al dominio pontificio. E solo dopo l'unità d'Italia che nella nuova capitale del regno si avverte chiaramente un'impetuosa ondata di cambiamento: gli ebrei iniziano a partecipare con grande passione alla costruzione del Paese che, in virtù del tributo di sangue da essi versato sui campi di battaglia del Risorgimento e della Grande Guerra, considerano a pieno titolo la loro patria. La Chiesa di Roma, tuttavia, sconfitta ma non rassegnata, addebitando l'oltraggio di Porta Pia a un complotto di forze anticattoliche rilancia la propaganda antigiudaica e rinnova contro gli ebrei le tradizionali accuse di deicidio e di omicidio rituale, fornendo argomenti e alibi sia ai ricorrenti episodi di violenza antigiudaica sia all'antisemitismo moderno, che condanna senza appello l'ebreo alla sua presunta identità razziale, negandogli ogni reale possibilità di assimilazione. Esito e culmine di questa martellante campagna d'odio è la pagina nera - vergognosa e incancellabile - delle cosiddette «leggi razziali», promulgate dal regime fascista nel 1938 come atto di adesione all'ideologia del Terzo Reich hitleriano, che sanciscono l'esclusione degli ebrei dal corpo vivo della società italiana. Accolte dapprima con indifferenza e senza un'esplicita protesta della Santa Sede, dopo l'8 settembre 1943 tali leggi spianano la strada alla deportazione ad Auschwitz e alla morte di oltre 2000 ebrei romani. E anche se molti italiani e una parte del clero si riscattano, creando a proprio rischio e pericolo una vasta rete di solidarietà a favore dei perseguitati in fuga, molte ombre continuano a gravare sul silenzio di Pio XII (a cui Riccardo Calimani dedica un'ampia e lucida analisi), che non condannò mai apertamente lo sterminio, pur essendone informato da diversi prelati dei Paesi in cui venne perpetrato. La segreta, ma ferma speranza dell'autore è che questo racconto «sia fonte di ispirazione, affinché tutti i popoli, nessuno escluso, in ogni parte del mondo, sappiano trovare la via della concordia e della giustizia, e possano vivere insieme su questa terra, se non con gioia, almeno in pace fra loro.
