Patterned quarter-leather hardcover. Cover worn and bumped. Cover edges bumped. Cover corners partly missing. Spine worn, bumped, pierced at several places and partly detached from rear cover. Hai Ben Sherira
LIKUTIM ME-RAV HAI GAON: SODOT AMUKOT...INYAN HA-MERKAVAH...AL ESER SEFIROT...
Reprint [ca. 1990]. Hardcover, 12mo, 46 leaves. In Hebrew. SUBJECT(S) : Cabala. Hai Ben Sherira (939-1038) was a gaon of Pumbedita and molder of the halakhah and the most prominent figure of his time. Of his youth nothing is known. From 986 he was the avbet din in the academy of Pumbedita, acting as the deputy to his father Sherira gaon; in this role he left his mark upon the mode of studies and general orientation of the academy. According to some, he had a share in composing the Iggeret Rav Sherira. Some time after he and his father had been released from prison, where they had been kept on a false charge, he became the gaon of Pumbedita, while his father was still alive, a position which he held for 40 years. Although his position had been vied for by Samuel b. Hophni the latter withdrew his claim to the gaonate when Hai married his daughter. Students came to Hais academy from Byzantium and from western Christian countries, from where queries were also sent to Hai. His ties with Spain and his influence upon Samuel ha-Nagid in particular are well known. Aside from his preeminence in rabbinic knowledge, he was well acquainted with the Persian and Arabic languages and with Arabic literature. While he permitted children to be taught Arabic writing and arithmetic, he warned against the study of philosophy. He criticized his father-in-law, Samuel b. Hophni, and others like him, who frequently read the works of non-Jews. Hai occupies a central position in the history of the halakhah. Later generations regarded him as the supreme authority, declaring that he, more than all the geonim, propagated the Torah in Israel
both in the east and in the west.
No one among his predecessors can be compared to him, who was the last of the geonim. The measure of his influence and the volume of his responsa, decisions, and comments can be gauged from the fact that approximately a third of all extant geonic responsaare his. In his writings Hai set out in detail his approach to the principles of faith and to the requirements of community leadership. In his piyyutim he expressed with much bitterness his sense of living in exile from Erez Israel. He was a mystic, who ascribed sanctity to the heikhalot literature, believing that whoever studied it in holiness and purity could ascend to the world of the angels and of the divine chariot...Hai drew special attention to the duty of the dayyanim to guide and admonish the people, to take responsibility for people's conduct and to be accountable for their sins. He demanded that strong measures be taken against dissenters and thieves, and under certain circumstances even permitted recourse to Jewish courts of law. He was opposed to the absolute annulment of vows on the eve of the Day of Atonement, his formulation of the Kol Nidrei prayer being: Of all vows
which we have vowed
and have omitted to fulfill either through neglect or under constraint we pray that the Lord of heaven may absolve and pardon us. He adopted a tolerant attitude towards traditional local liturgical practices, but was opposed to delving into the reasons for them, insisting on the observance of institutions introduced by those superior to our generations in learning and in caliber. He retained his physical and mental energies to the end. At the age of 99, a few months before his death, he replied with remarkable vigor to questions submitted to him. After his death, Samuel ha-Nagid eulogized him, saying: During his lifetime he acquired all the choicest wisdom, and though he left no child, he has, in every land, both east and west, children whom he reared in the Torah. Of Hais works the following are extant: (1) fragments of the Arabic original of Sefer Shevuot, and a Hebrew rendering by an unknown translator of the entire work entitled Mishpetei Shevuot; (2) fragments of the Arabic original of Sefer ha-Mikkah ve-ha-Mimkar. This, his chief literary production, was translated into Hebrew by Isaac Al-Bargeloni, and another version is extant in manuscript; (3) Sefer ha-Shetarot, containing the texts of various documents, such as a ketubbah, a get, etc. Fragments of Hais commentary on several tractates of the Babylonian Talmud have also been preserved. The ascription of certain other works to Hai has, in recent years, been rejected. (4) Hai wrote numerous responsa. In 1986, T. Groner published a complete bibliography of Hais responsa and his other works as well. (5) To aid the study of Arabic, Hai wrote Kitab Al-Hawi, a comprehensive Hebrew/Aramaic-Arabic anagrammatic dictionary. It was very popular and in use through the end of the 13th century. A. Maman published 10 of the 32 folios of the dictionary. Only three folios had been previously published. The rest was extant only in manuscript (Ben-Sasson, Levinger, Derovan in EJ, 2007) . OCLC lists 3 copies worldwide (JTS, YU, Harvard) . Very good condition. (Heb-40-19)

DE HELDENSTRIJD DER MAQUIS; HUN WERK, HUN LIJDEN, HUN STRIJDEN
1st edition. Original photographic Yellow paper wrappers, 12mo, 47 pages. Includes illustrations (portrait, facsimiles) . 21 cm. In the original Flemish. Ehri (2014) writes that This is an eyewitness account by a Jewish survivor who escaped from a deportation train after departure from this transit camp.....The Belgian army barracks named Dossin de Saint-Georges, built in the town of Malines in 1756, were transformed into a Sammellager (Assembly Camp) on July 25, 1942. The first Jews who had received call-up orders arrived two days later, and the first train to Auschwitz left on August 4. This building was chosen for two reasons. It was right next to a railroad and Malines is located between Brussels and Antwerp, where 90% of the Jews in Belgium lived. After the roundups started, the Jews were taken by trucks to the inner square inside the barracks where armed SS were awaiting them. After being registered and stripped of their identity papers and last personal possessions, the prisoners had to wear a card around their neck with their number for the next deportation train. There were various categories of prisoners, the biggest of which were those marked for direct deportation. The barracks could house 1, 000 persons, but at times more than 1, 700 were crammed into them, with about 100 people on bunk beds in dormitories only about 21 to 7 meters wide. Later, they had to sleep on straw bags on the floor. The guard duty on the perimeter was done by Flemish SS members, supervised by German Security Police. THE MULTIFAITH MOVEMENT: GLOBAL RISKS AND COSMOPOLITAN SOLUTIONS
Hardback. 8vo. XVI, 181 pages. 25 cm. First edition. This book documents the ultramodern rise of the multifaith movement, as mulitfaith initiatives have been increasingly deployed as cosmopolitan solutions to counter global risks such as terrorism and climate change at the turn of the 21st century. These projects aim to enhance common security, particularly in Western societies following the events of September 11, 2001 and the July 2005 London bombings, where multifaith engagement has been promoted as a strategy to counter violent extremism. The author draws on interviews with 56 leading figures in the field of multifaith relations, including Paul Knitter, Eboo Patel, Marcus Braybrooke, Katherine Marshall, John Voll and Krista Tippett. Identifying the principle aims of the multifaith movement, the analysis explores the benefitsand challengesof multifaith engagement, as well as the effectiveness of multifaith initiatives in countering the process of radicalization. Building on notions of cosmopolitanism, the work proposes a new theoretical framework termed Netpeace, which recognizes the interconnectedness of global problems and their solutions. In doing so, it acknowledges the capacity of multi-actor peacebuilding networks, including religious and state actors, to address the pressing dilemmas of our times. The primary intention of the book is to assist in the formation of new models of activism and governance, founded on a politics of understanding modeled by the multifaith movement. Publishers Description. Subjects: Religions - Relations. Multiculturalism - Religious aspects. Religious tolerance. Brand new. New Condition. (SPRINGER-1-15) xx

SEFER ZIKARON LI-KEHILAT ROZ'AN (AL HA-NAREV) ROZHAN MEMORIAL BOOK
1st edition, original cloth, 8vo. 518 + 96 pages. In Hebrew and Yiddish with an English section. Eight years have gone by since we first began preparations for this book on the Jewish community of Rozhan, until at long last it can be published now. It was a great effort made by a number of people devoted to the weighty and difficult task to erect a fitting memorial to our community. It is what other communities of Israel have done and no doubt it is the right thing to do for the people of the book. Rozhan was no different from other Jewish townships in Poland that are no more, but to us, who were born and grew up there, she has something unique. It is not only the landscape, the topographic situation on the high bank of the River Narew. It was also the Jews, who had been living at the place for generations, rebuilding it stubbornly and assiduously many times. In fact after each of the many wars that swept over the region, that lies on the road from Russia to Warsaw. Those were homely Jews of all social strata, orthodox and freethinkers, Zionists and anti-Zionists. Above all we have at heart the Jewish youth of Rozhan that took upon itself the task to redeem the world and the nation - and only few of them have reached the final haven of rest here in Israel, while others, of the few who did survive, have found shelter in the West and built their homes there. It is the intention of this book to keep our past alive and to preserve the shining memory of those who lived and were active there, to show that they were not anonymous and to describe their striving and struggling to maintain a definitely Jewish, religious, social and political existence. This book wants to tell future generations how the Jews of Rozhan created Jewish life in the midst of a hostile environment, how they built for themselves the framework of a society and filled it with deep-rooted national values, how they created their own institutions, that were able impose their authority - after democratically arrived at decisions with no governmental powers behind them. The book also wants to keep alive the old Jewish spirit maintained by our people everywhere, the rule Jews stand by each other that found its expression in individual help as well as in organized assistance such as various mutual funds. The book is also meant as a memorial to the tragedy of our people. Jews of Rozhan had to run for their lives during the very first days of the war, and one after the other they fell as victims on the bloodstained roads of Poland. Some survived after having passed through the hell of exile in the vastness of Russia and Siberia and back; only a few were lucky enough to reach Israel and to build new homes here. The book contains about 600 pages and it reflects a collective effort. It was not easy to obtain the material, as there are next to no writers among our people. So we had to apply to as many of our townsfolk as possible in order to make them talk or write - those who did write were a minority and most contributions were given orally and had to be taken down. We endeavoured to get in touch with as many as possible and to give a rounded out picture of the town, its history, people and folklore, but we feel that in spite of all our efforts we could not note everything worth remembering. All we can say is that we have done our best to present a many-sided picture of everything that was human and Jewish and good. (from English preface) SUBJECT(S) : Jews -- Poland -- Ro´z? An -- History. Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) . Ethnic relations.
