Hayim, Yosef
SEDER HAGADAH SHEL PESAH
BAGDAD
Original Cloth. 16mo. [138] pages. 16 cm. In Hebrew and Judeo-Arabic, in Rashi Script. The Haggadah according to the Baghdad Rite, with Judeo-Arabic (Yahudic) . Arranged by Rabbi Yosef Hayim (1832-1909) (Rabbi Yosef Chaim ben Eliahu Tov) , leading Hakham of Baghdad, with his Bakashot [pleas]. This Haggadah was often reprinted and exported, though few copies have survived. Printed at the famous press of Solomon Belforte of Leghorn. Belforte belonged to an Italian Jewish family that settled in Leghorn (Livorno) at the end of the 17th century. He started to edit Hebrew prayer books in 1821 and established his own printing house in 1834. In 1843, the local government authorized the printing of Italian translations of Hebrew liturgical texts. The activity of Salomone Belforte & Co. Was continued by the family with the forced hiatus of the period of Fascist antisemitic laws and the war until 1961, when all the equipment of the printing house was sold to an Israeli company. For almost 100 years, Salomone Belforte & Co. Was one of the most prestigious publishers of Hebrew books, meeting the intellectual and religious needs of Italian, Sephardi, and also Ashkenazi communities. - EJ 2008. Bound in original cloth with gilt title. No illustrations. Subjects: Haggadot - Texts. Seder - Liturgy - Texts. Judaism - Iraq - Baghdad - Liturgy Texts. Hayyim Ben Isaac, Or Zarua, 13th Cent. Jaffe, Mordechai, Michael; 19th Cent. Rosenberg, Judah Ben Alexsandr; 19th Cent.
SEFER SHEELOT U-TESHUVOT MAHARAH OR ZARUA
(FT) Hardcover, 8vo, 91 pages, 8 pages, 23 cm. In Hebrew. SUBJECT(S) : Descriptor: Responsa -- 1040-1600. Jewish law. With: Sefer Hagahot Rabenu Ak? Iva Eger. Akiva ben Moses Guens Eger. Torun: Huva le-bayit ha-defus e. Y. ... Nahum Shtreyzand: Gedruckt bei S. Dombrowski, 629, 1869 -- Sefer K? Ashot meyushav. Isaiah ben Judah Loeb Berlin. [Konigsberg]: [s. N. ], 620, 1860 -- Sefer Sefer H? Idushe ha-Shas. Isaiah ben Judah Loeb Berlin. [Konigsberg]: [s. N. ], 620, 1860 -- Sefer Sefer K? Ore ha-dorot. David Conforte. Berlin: David K? Assel, 606, 1846. Hayyim (Eliezer) ben Isaac Or Zarua (late 13th century) was a German rabbi and halakhic authority, called Or Zarua after the famous work composed by his father, Isaac b. Moses of Vienna. Hayyim was orphaned in his early youth. While his father, Isaac b. Moses, the author of the Or Zarua, is mentioned numerous times throughout the tosafot commentaries, Hayyim is only mentioned in the Tosafot Yeshanim, a variant version of the tosafot commentaries. Hayyims responsa (Leipzig, 1865; reprinted Jerusalem, 2002, with commentary) are especially valuable for the light they shed on the people, places, and events of his time. Some of the responsa provide important source material on Jewish-Christian relations in the 13th century. Most of Hayyims decisions are based on those of the French and German halakhic authorities, particularly on his fathers Or Zarua. Knowledge about the life and teaching of Hayyim Or Zarua derives from a book of responsa of which he was the author and a book of homiletic sermons (derashot) which was published under the title Derashot MHRH, Halakhic Decisions of Rabbi Hayyim Or Zarua, first edition according to Parma MS Moscow by Yitzhak Shimshon Lange (Jerusalem, 1973) . From the copious historical material found in his responsa, much can be learned about the Jewish communities (Kehillot) , their internal organization, leadership, rights, and obligations. We also learn how he grappled with the challenges and dangers of living as a Jew in the midst of a medieval, gentile society (Derovan, Eidelberg and Horowitz in EJ 2010) . OCLS lists 5 copies worldwide (JTS, George Washington University, Harvard, YU, Brandeis) . Bumped corners. Repair to spine. Light yellowing of pages. Good condition. (Heb-19-3)

SUBJECT(S) : Jews -- Education -- New York (State) -- New York. The Hebrew Free School Association was a 19th-century organization that countered efforts of Christian missionaries by founding a group of free schools for New York Citys Jewish immigrant children. In 1864, Christian missionaries had opened a school on the Lower East Side that offered to teach Hebrew to Jewish children, but the offer proved only a lure to convert Jewish children to Christianity. Outraged, a dozen Reform and Orthodox congregations opened a Hebrew free school nearby, with a complete Hebrew studies program that supplemented the standard curriculum of secular public schools. The school was so successful that the organizers formed a Free Hebrew School Association that opened branches in other Jewish neighborhoods. Aside from turning back the threat posed by Christian missionaries, the association, which was made up of successful, Americanized Jews of German origin, became a major instrument for helping newly arrived Jewsmostly from impoverished shtetls and ghettoes of eastern Europeto adapt to their new country. In addition to traditional secular education and studies in the Hebrew language and Jewish religion and history, the schools taught the new arrivals hygiene and other American ways unknown in their homelands. The schools began closing in the 1870s, as the New York public school system expanded and as those Jews who had learned their lessons well emerged from the slums and moved elsewhere to assimilate with other Americans (Encyclopedia of American Education, 2011). OCLC: 236064870. OCLC lists 3 copies (NYPL, Harvard, YIVO) Very light wear to cloth, old spine label and institutional number on title page, faint damp stain along extreme bottom edge of last few leaves, otherwise very clean. Rare in any condition, here a gorgeous association copy. (AMR-39-5-D)
