The North Italian troubadours from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries wrote lyric poetry in Provencal and narrative poetry in French; Italian tended to be restricted to legal prose. Ramon Vidal de Besalu at the end of the twelfth century declared that French was best suited to certain poetic genres - romanz, retronsas and pasturellas -, while Provencal was more appropriate to others - vers, cansos and sirventes.
