The Eyes of History showcases the work of the nation's most distinguished photojournalists. From Ground Zero to the Pentagon the War in Afghanistan Anthrax Gary Condit Barry Bonds Hillary Rodham Clinton and Michael Jordan these images capture raw emotions of rage and despair hope and renewal experienced in 2001 an unforgettable year. The photographs were selected from the White House News Photographers' Association annual contest Eyes of History which names a photographer of the year and recognizes the work of leading still and video photojournalists. "These photographs are incredibly powerful. They tell stories for people and events that have made an lasting impression on the world" says Corcoran President and Director David C. Levy. "The Corcoran is honored to exhibit these memorials to history. Every American should see this exhibition because they provide a deeper context of last year's events and show the ultimate will of Americans to persevere and succeed." Susan Walsh president of WHNPA agrees: "The images created by our members are an amazing visual record of the past year. We have seen many changes in photojournalism during the 81 years of the WHNPA. However this year given the events of September 11 we are reminded that photojournalists though their images help a nation to share its grief and its glory" says Walsh. This year in the stills category 112 awards were presented including "Photographer of the Year" awarded to Stephen Crowley of the New York Times for his dramatic and diverse portfolio that includes a pictorial essay on the people of Afghanistan and the day in the life of President Bush. "Political Photo of the Year" awarded to Doug Mills of the Associated Press for his photo of White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card informing President Bush of the attack on the World Trade Center. White House News Photographers' Association
Eyes of History 2005
Washington DC: White House News Photographers' Association 2005. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Trade paperback. Very good. 111 1 pages. Illustrations mostly in color. Format is approximately 8.75 inches by 11 inches. In the aftermath of the judging of the White House News Photographers' Association's "Eyes of History 2005" contest this last weekend at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC the organization's president and contest chair have set forth new contest guidelines "in an attempt to clarify what 'digital darkroom' tools and PhotoShop methods are acceptable for photographers who enter the annual competition." The WHNPA executive board and the contest committee have agreed that the new guidelines become a permanent part of the WHNPA's annual contest's rules. The rapid move to publish and draw attention to the guidelines came after internal WHNPA discussions regarding three separate issues that arose from the judging including two entries that were disqualified - one for digital alteration and one for not meeting contest rules - and responding to a complaint lodged following the judging about "overuse" of PhotoShop techniques in an image in the winning portfolio of the WHNPA Photographer of the Year Andrea Bruce Woodall of The Washington Post. It's the second time Woodall 31 has won WHNPA's top honor; her first POY title came in 2003. This year she also won first place in the Picture Story/News Feature and Portfolio categories. Portfolio second and third place honors also went to Washington Post photojournalists. Liz O. Baylen of The Washington Times won the Political Photo of the Year category. The White House News Photographers Association is dedicated to promoting protecting and advancing the interests and intellectual property rights of its members which still consists of still and video photographers assigned to cover the White House and other news events in Washington and beyond. The Association strongly believes in the public's natural and legal right to freedom in searching for the truth and the right to be accurately and completely informed about the world in which we live. They believe that there is a direct linkage between the survival of a democratic society and an accurate and free press. Members of the WHNPA maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct in serving the public interest which includes truth accuracy and fairness. Our images strive to be objective and independent. The White House News Photographers Association holds quarterly membership meetings to benefit our members. Topics include grant winners showing their work new product demonstrations by our sponsors and panel discussions to educate the wider community. We offer ongoing educational programs on copyright and intellectual property and workshops to teach new ways of presenting work through multimedia. With our student contest and programming we aim to stimulate and encourage interest in photography either as a future career or as a hobby. White House News Photographers' Association paperback
