‎Unique traduction française, effectuée à partir de plusieurs titres de l'auteur.Friedrich Wilhelm Gerstäcker (1816-1872) est presque un inconnu en France, alors que dans le monde germanique il fut celui qui fit connaître les États-Unis et l'Océanie dans les pays de langue allemande : c'est en 1837 que ce Hambourgeois de naissance effectua son premier voyage en Amérique où il mena une vie itinérante en exerçant quantité de petits métiers ni plus ni moins bien traité que la plupart des émigrants européens qui suivaient alors le même chemin. Il revint en Allemagne en 1843 après avoir parcouru le pays en tous sens, de la frontière canadienne au Texas, et de l'Arkansas à la Louisiane. Il repartit en Amérique en 1849, visita notamment la Californie, avant de découvrir l'Amérique du Sud, l'Australie et Tahiti. Ses expériences, notamment celles des ruées sur l'or, lui fournirent la matière de relations personnelles, de romans d'aventures et le conduisirent également à traduire plusieurs écrivains américains (Melville, Farnham, Bill Truck, etc.).Seulement deux exemplaires au CCF (BnF et Soteville-lès-Rouen).‎
