Status of Women in Rural Societies [Hardcover]
In India, about three fourth of the population, still live in rural areas. The notion that women in rural societies enjoy relatively higher social status appears to be a myth. Gender discrimination is a social reality irrespective of the nature of societies and no universally applicable rule exist to measure the degree of status of women in various societies. There is an imperative need to delineate the factors determining the social and economic status of women and to make efforts to strengthen the process that help women to raise their status in the society through educational, political and economic empowerment. The present volume contains 18 papers by eminent scholars who are authorities in the field of Social Anthropology. The papers included in this book explore recent issues related to the socio-economic positions of women in tribal and rural societies. First American edition. Contents clean. Hardbound. Very Good. Hannah Mary Rathbone (1798-1878) was an English writer and the author of The Diary of Lady Willoughby. Influenced by her father's tastes, she had read many histories and memoirs of the Civil war and adjacent periods, and her publisher (Thomas Longman) took great pride in bringing out the Diary as an exact reproduction of a book of the seventeenth century, in which it was supposed to be written. He had a new fount specially cast at the Chiswick Press. In some quarters the Diary was at once accepted as genuine; in others, author and publisher incurred indignant reproof as having conspired in an intentional deception. Readers speculated on the identity of the writer; and Robert Southey, Lord John Manners, and Mr. John Murray were in turn suggested. In the third edition the publishers and author inserted a joint note avowing the real character of the book. In 1847 Mrs. Rathbone issued a sequel under the title Some further Portions of the Diary of Lady Willoughby which do relate to her Domestic History and to the of the latter Years of the Reign of King Charles the First, the Protectorate, and the Revolution. The two parts were in 1848 re-published together. The general excellence of Mrs. Rathbone's workmanship, when she is at her best, becomes most clearly evident if Lady Willoughby's Diary is compared with Anne Manning's Life of Mary Powell (1850), which manifestly owed its origin to the success of the earlier work, but is altogether inferior to it. Front free endpaper bears gift inscription dated Christmas 1910. The author Myrtle Reed 1874-1911 was an American poet journalist and novelist who also published cookbooks under the name Olive Green. The illustrator Isaac A. Morgan 1871-1913 was a Chicago newspaper artist who also illustrated works by L. Frank Baum and others. The composer Eva Cruzen Hart also wrote The Delta Gamma Waltzes and the Nicosis Waltzes; little else is known about her. In Good Condition: cover is rubbed and lightly soiled; significant loss of paper over lower corner of front board; minor loss at other corners and along edges; very faint dampstain along lower gutter throughout; light soiling throughout; stitching is loose; a few tears of 2 cm. or less from lower edges without loss. <br/><br/> G.P.
