Radway, Janice A.
Reading the Romance: Women, Patriarchy, and Popular Literature
Originally published in 1984 and now re-issued with a new introduction by the author. "Reading the Romance" challenges popular (and often demeaning) myths about why romantic fiction, one of publishing's most lucrative categories, captivates millions of women readers. Among those who have disparaged romance reading are feminists, literary critics, and theorists of mass culture. They claim that romances enforce the woman reader's dependence on men and acceptance of the repressive ideology purveyed by popular culture. Radway questions such claims, arguing that critical attention "must shift from the text itself, taken in isolation, to the complex social event of reading." She examines that event, from the complicated business of publishing and distribution to the individual reader's engagement with the text. Radway's provocative approach combines reader-response criticism with anthropology and feminist psychology. Asking readers themselves to explore their reading motives, habits, and rewards, she conducted interviews in a midwestern town with forty-two romance readers whom she met through Dorothy Evans, a chain bookstore employee who has earned a reputation as an expert on romantic fiction. Evans defends her customers' choice of entertainment; reading romances, she tells Radway, is no more harmful than watching sports on television. "We read books so we won't cry" is the poignant explanation one woman offers for her reading habit. Indeed, Radway found that while the women she studied devote themselves to nurturing their families, these wives and mothers receive insufficient devotion or nurturance in return. In romances the women find not only escape from the demanding and often tiresome routines of their lives but also a hero who supplies the tenderness and admiring attention that they have learned not to expect. The heroines admired by Radway's group defy the expected stereotypes; they are strong, independent, and intelligent. That such characters often find themselves to be victims of male aggression and almost always resign themselves to accepting conventional roles in life has less to do, Radway argues, with the women readers' fantasies and choices than with their need to deal with a fear of masculine dominance. These romance readers resent not only the limited choices in their own lives but the patronizing atitude that men especially express toward their reading tastes. In fact, women read romances both to protest and to escape temporarily the narrowly defined role prescribed for them by a patriarchal culture. Paradoxically, the books that they read make conventional roles for women seem desirable. It is this complex relationship between culture, text, and woman reader that Radway urges feminists to address. Romance readers, she argues, should be encouraged to deliver their protests in the arena of actual social relations rather than to act them out in the solitude of the imagination. In a new introduction, Janice Radway places the book within the context of current scholarship and offers both an explanation and critique of the study's limitations. 276p. bibliography.index. Book

Status of Women in Rural Societies [Hardcover]
In India, about three fourth of the population, still live in rural areas. The notion that women in rural societies enjoy relatively higher social status appears to be a myth. Gender discrimination is a social reality irrespective of the nature of societies and no universally applicable rule exist to measure the degree of status of women in various societies. There is an imperative need to delineate the factors determining the social and economic status of women and to make efforts to strengthen the process that help women to raise their status in the society through educational, political and economic empowerment. The present volume contains 18 papers by eminent scholars who are authorities in the field of Social Anthropology. The papers included in this book explore recent issues related to the socio-economic positions of women in tribal and rural societies. The issues include-Health, Nutrition, Education, Adoption, Inheritance, Succession, Marriage, Divorce and participation in Panchayat Raj. The papers of the volume also conclude that in spite of Government’s so called efforts, the agony of rural women continues. It is hope that the material incorporated in this volume will provide fresh information to the researchers and scholars alike. Rathbone, Hannah Mary.
LADY WILLOUGHBY: Or Passages from the Dairy of a Wife and Mother in the Seventeenth Century. From the Second London Edition.
pp. iv, 193, (10 unnumbered pages of publishers advertisements) 12mo. 200mm. Original publisher's full red cloth binding embossed and in blind with center cartouche of Barnes & Co. Spine ruled in blind and lettered plainly in gilt. Boards rubbed with light soiling. Spine darkened and brittle with wear to head and base. Corners frayed. End papers with publishers advertisements. First American edition. Contents clean. Hardbound. Very Good. Hannah Mary Rathbone (1798-1878) was an English writer and the author of The Diary of Lady Willoughby. Influenced by her father's tastes, she had read many histories and memoirs of the Civil war and adjacent periods, and her publisher (Thomas Longman) took great pride in bringing out the Diary as an exact reproduction of a book of the seventeenth century, in which it was supposed to be written. He had a new fount specially cast at the Chiswick Press. In some quarters the Diary was at once accepted as genuine; in others, author and publisher incurred indignant reproof as having conspired in an intentional deception. Readers speculated on the identity of the writer; and Robert Southey, Lord John Manners, and Mr. John Murray were in turn suggested. In the third edition the publishers and author inserted a joint note avowing the real character of the book. In 1847 Mrs. Rathbone issued a sequel under the title Some further Portions of the Diary of Lady Willoughby which do relate to her Domestic History and to the of the latter Years of the Reign of King Charles the First, the Protectorate, and the Revolution. The two parts were in 1848 re-published together. The general excellence of Mrs. Rathbone's workmanship, when she is at her best, becomes most clearly evident if Lady Willoughby's Diary is compared with Anne Manning's Life of Mary Powell (1850), which manifestly owed its origin to the success of the earlier work, but is altogether inferior to it.
