‎WOMEN ICE SKATING PHOTO ARCHIVE. MUNSTER BLOW Sharlee Janet.‎

‎A sensational archive documenting the exceptional career of a Flushing NY professional ice skater during World War II and afterwards encompassing 300 silver gelatin photographs studio photos over 100 clippings ice show theatre programs and other ephemera. She performed and starred with Sonja Henie’s Rockefeller Center ice shows as well as 100s of ice shows from 1941 through 1948 on and off Broadway often appearing twice a night at the Iridium Room at the St. Regis or The Bowman Room at the Biltmore. The photographs clippings and documents reveal she was not only an excellent ice skater but also professional fencer skier and by the age of 20 had earned her pilot’s license with the intent to become a charter pilot after the War.‎

‎Flushing NY & Beverly Hills CA: Sharlee Janet Munster Blow Raymond Blow 42-20 Kissena Blvd.; 9168 Beverly Blvd. 1941-1968. Two vols. Thick 4to. 163 mylar sleeves with 300 silver gelatin photographs sized from 2.5 x 3.5 in. up to 8 x 10 in. 35 of the photographs are signed or dedicated either to Sharlee or Ray many have photographer’s stamp on versos or embossed photographer’s stamps some have lengthy explanatory location and/or identifying annotations on versos several are sleeved in nightclub portfolio sleeves 10 colour transparency slides & 20 snapshot negatives in photo lab sleeves over 100 newspaper clippings magazine clippings articles printed certificates brochures theatre programs etc. Recent 3-ring binders with stamping on front covers. This amazing photo and ephemera archive offers an invaluable visual record of a young Flushing NY ice skater performing at Rockefeller Center with Sonja Henie’s ice shows off-Broadway cabaret and night club venue during World War II and post-War New York. Munster 1924-2016 was one of the thousands of young girls inspired to become professional ice skaters by Sonia Henie’s ice skating movies ice shows glittering costumes and production numbers. By 1941 Munster was appearing in “It Happens on Ice†which ran for 386 performances and included such ice skating performers as Dorothy Allan Jo Ann Dean Paul Castle Edwina Blades and Mary Jane Yeo. Photos in the archive show her early practice sessions as a teenager in Flushing Queens NY signed photos from Betty Atkinson Paul Castle and other stars who appeared in the production along with newspaper clippings and program. Within two years she was appearing in the Iridium Room Ice Shows which were twice nightly affairs and designed for before & after Broadway shows featuring a 20 foot square ice rink and often elaborate sets. She would perform in the “Newfangles†Ice Show at the Terrace Room alongside Carol Lynne Rudy Richards Dorothy Lewis Bob & Peggy White; “Ice Capers†at The Bowman Room in 1944 at the Biltmore Hotel; the “Circus Haze Ice Review†at the Hotel Roosevelt; and finally the long running “Hats Off to Ice†which ran for 889 performances from 1944 through 1946 and was Henie’s most popular show also represented in this collection by the souvenir Center Theatre Orchestra Seat Stub for the first performance in June 1944. The Iridium Room and other New York supper club ice shows featured live music during and after the war often featuring Freddie Miller Cab Calloway -- represented here in the archive with a signed photo showing Cab and his band dedicated to Sharlee The Harmonicats -- another signed photo all signed by the trio Gus Martel and others thriving through 1947. After a cabaret tax was imposed by the city on the supper clubs offering live entertainment hotels across New York eliminated the very popular ice skating shows. Of additional interest are the many production photos showing performance practices publicity shots while dressed in elaborate costumes the chorus lines of male and female ice skaters and the tremendous stage backdrops for such productions as Hats on Ice. Some of the photos show Sharlee Munster and her future husband Ray Blow in skates in costume along with many of their costars in these large productions. Sharlee had tremendous drive and in addition to her passion for skating and performing was inspired to become a pilot and at 18 years old began flying lessons 2-3 times a week weather permitting often working around her show and social schedule. There are photos of her at the Bendix airfield her standing beside a Piper J-3 Cub in which she had purchased a half-interest and successfully completed her first solo flight at Lime Ridge Airport in Poughquag NY August 11 1944 with Norman Sylvia as her flight instructor. She joined the Women Fliers Club and began studying and taking the tests for a commercial pilot’s rating intending to become a charter pilot after the War. Following the closing of most of the ice shows in New York Sharlee and her cousin Ray Munster became ski instructors fencing instructors and performed in ice shows at at the famed Concord Resort Hotel in the Borscht Belt part of the Catskills. In January 1948 she marries one of her fellow skaters Raymond Kenneth Blow 1924-1992 who had also appeared in many of Sonja Henie’s productions at Rockefeller Center as well as the Roxy Theatre and as a couple continued living in the family apartment on Kissena Blvd. through 1950 while Ray performed. By 1952 the young couple and their son Greg had moved to an apartment in Beverly Hills CA with photos showing the family frolicking and fishing at the California beaches visiting Palm Desert in 105 degree heat the opening of Disneyland and more. ‎WOMEN CONDUCT LITERATURE. N. H.‎

‎THE LADIES DICTIONARY; BEING A GENERAL ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE FAIR-SEX: A WORK NEVER ATTEMPTED BEFORE IN ENGLISH‎

‎London: Printed for John Dunton at the Raven in the Poultrey 1694. FIRST EDITION. 183 x 104 mm. 7 1/4 x 4 1/2". 4 p.l. 240 161-352 301-484 401-528 pp. i.e. 744 pp. as noted in 18th century bookseller's declaration on flyleaf. FIRST EDITION. Attractive period-style calf by Richard Smart cover with blind-ruled borders blind-stamped floral tools at corners raised bands spine gilt in compartments with intricate lozenge centerpieces and scrolling cornerpieces red morocco label endleaves of period paper. Recto of front flyleaf with pasted-on "Memoriae Causa" dated Friday 15 March 1782 noting the errors in page numbering and attesting that the work is complete and is 744 pp.; verso of flyleaf with pasted-on manuscript bookseller's description in the same hand. Wing H-99; ESTC R6632. Overall minor browning due to paper stock never offensive occasional minor foxing smudges rust spots or tiny burn holes but a very good copy internally generally clean and crisp in a fine new replica binding. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single woman of marriageable age must be in want of a book telling her how to get a husband and our anonymous 17th century author is here to help with advice on beauty fashion deportment and of course love courtship and marriage. Drawing on the confidences of female friends the advice they have shared with him and "MY OWN EXPERIENCE IN LOVE AFFAIRS" capitals in original "N. H." provides in roughly alphabetical order everything from the meaning and etymology of females names and brief biographies of famous or infamous women from history and legend to recipes for beauty concoctions candies and preserves and home remedies. He addresses in depth the characteristics and duties of a good husband and wife the problems that may arise in a marriage the Indifference of Husbands Jealousy Inconstancy the pleasures and dangers of Kissing and the day-to-day concerns of Keeping House and managing Household Expenses. It is especially interesting that the text addresses topics of concern for women of different classes. For example the entries on Laundresses and House-maids do not as we might expect offer advice to women of means on managing servants but are addressed to young women who go into service letting them know what to expect and how to succeed. We can scarcely improve upon the description of our 18th century colleague whose pasted-in description observes: "After an attentive Perusal of the Work . . . the Judgement and Opinion of the Proprietor concerning the whole is: That for the many rare Secrets excellent Directions in Conduct & Behavior notable Counsels in Morals Religious & Pious Documents remarkable Relations & other singular matters it contains; 'tis richly worth far above its original Value . . . as 'tis very Scarce & out of Print." Copies are not commonly seen in the marketplace and when they do appear they are usually in unfortunate condition. Printed for John Dunton at the Raven in the Poultrey unknown‎

‎WOMEN EDUCATION DUNBAR Charles F.‎

‎Reply to Dr. Stillé's Strictures on the Harvard Examinations for Women wrapper title‎

‎Philadelphia: Penn Monthly 1878. Offprint. First separate edition. Octavo. Sewn pamphlet; printed blue paper wrappers; 12pp; errata slip bound in after final leaf of text. Rear wrapper neatly detached; old tide-line to upper margin of front wrapper; text tight and unmarked - a Good complete and sound copy. Signed in type and end of text by Charles F. Dunbar. Article reprinted from the April 1878 issue of Otis Kendall's Penn Monthly in which Stillé's original article had appeared two months earlier. Dunbar an eminent Harvard economist answers the criticisms of Stillé then provost of the University of Pennsylvania who had taken issue with the profferment of the Harvard Preliminary Examination for Women in the city of Philadelphia. Stillé's argument appears to have been based as much on parochialism as criticism of the exam's content; he was at this time working to raise the profile of Penn among elite American universities and resented the incursion of Harvard onto Penn's home turf. But Stillé evinces more than a little snobbery to say nothing of chauvinism in his assertion that ".no hot-house treatment which forces a precocious and unnatural development can ever produce that fruit which is the support and comfort of human life" - an assertion which Dr. Dunbar answers somewhat caustically: "These truths are well-worn and not denied but if they serve in connection any other purpose than that of a modest rhetorical embellishment it is because the relate to some fancied system quite different from that under discussion."

Despite widespread criticisms similar to the ones ably answered by Dunbar in the present essay The Harvard Examinations for Women - quite stringent covering a wide range of subjects and requiring their subjects to answer in at least two languages other than English - eventually became a national standard for the accreditation of young women who were unable whether for reasons of gender or circumstance to attend four-year universities. Stillé meanwhile became one of the University of Pennsylvania's historical icons; ".the extraordinary progress begun in his administration initiated the great expansion that was to continue under his immediate successors." DAB. The pamphlet appears uncommon - though widely catalogued in WorldCat nearly all holdings examined appear to be digital copies of the original held at Harvard's Schlesinger Library. unknown books‎

‎WOMEN TRAVEL WRITING. PARDOE MISS JULIA. BARTLETT WILLIAM H. Illustrator‎

‎THE BEAUTIES OF THE BOSPHORUS‎

‎London: Published for the proprietors by George Virtue 1838. FIRST EDITION. 298 x 220 mm. 11 1/4 x 8 3/4". iv 164 pp. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary half calf over rose-colored cloth by John Gray of Edinburgh with his ticket on front pastedown raised bands spine gilt in compartments. With frontispiece portrait of the author engraved title and 79 plates after William H. Bartlett including one map of the area. Front free endpaper with tipped-in letter signed by the author; with two-page biography of the author and transcription of the letter loosely laid in. Ross pp. 43-44; Blackmer Catalogue 888; Hunnisett p. 114. Spine and top edge of covers just slightly faded silk with a little minor spotting contents with scattered light foxing mostly confined to margins and versos of plates persistent light marginal stain in upper gutter but these issues all quite minor and on the whole a clean solid attractive copy with no major defects. This is a notable item for at least three reasons: it was one of the major books in the canon of illustrated volumes produced by Bartlett; it was significant as an early work on the region by a woman; and in the words of the Blackmer Catalogue it "had much influence in terms of increasing popular appreciation of its subject." Reviewers praised Bartlett's work as Virtue published volume after volume the illustrations of which--varied and picturesque--reminded readers of places as far apart as the Golden Horn and the Catterskill Falls. About the region depicted in the present work Ross quotes a letter from Bartlett to William Beattie in which he describes Constantinople and surroundings as "a vast phantasmagoria--very much like a moving diorama full of scenes from fairy tales." A writer of fiction biography and travel accounts Pardoe 1806-62 devoted her adult life to unremitting study and literary production. The "Feminist Companion" indicates that her travel books including this one but especially her work dealing with Hungary were well researched and even if they are "somewhat florid" they are also "sympathetic to unfamiliar customs and beliefs." This is a common book but our volume is distinguished from other copies by its condition without any extensive foxing as is often the case as well as the tipped-in letter from Pardoe to someone associated with Harper's Magazine regarding possible contributions to the periodical. Her tone is delightfully frank noting that she would "forward a submission with pleasure if I have time to do so" but warns that she "must in all cases select my own subjects. Published for the proprietors, by George Virtue unknown‎

‎Women Americana‎

‎Three Sisters: An Intimate Photo Album of the Midwest Between World Wars‎

‎Women. Photo Album: Three Sisters. Midwest 1918-1927. Oblong octavo. Covers are brown cloth boards held by ties. Oblong octavo 11" x 7" inches. Title "Photographs" in gilt. 230 snapshots in a variety of sizes most 3.5" x 4.5" inches but also 2.25" x 3.5" 1.5" x 2.25" and 7" x 5". Both black and white and sepia in glossy and matte finishes. Very occasionally torn along the fold and minor silvering to a few photos. The life of three sisters growing up in the Midwest is captured with warmth and incredible detail creating a culturally significant document of middle-class family life between the World Wars. The majority are captioned in white pencil or white ink with the name of the person in the photo and a brief description like "Sunday best"; some are a little ironic tone such as "Seeking sunburn" underneath a photo of two of the sisters sweaty and bare armed in a row boat and "No water but our tongues" under a picture of the sisters as little children in bathing suits on their porch pulling silly faces. We follow the women from childhood through early adulthood through their schools and summer camps across suburban Ohio the shores of Michigan and the wooded Ozarks. The private lives of these young girls are revealed to be impish spirited and silly in these intimate photographs; At the same time they were growing up in a period of great change. With the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920 they were the first generation of women to come of age in a time when they could exercise the right to vote. Bumping at corners and a half-inch tear at top of spine otherwise clean. First page separated. A fascinating cultural artifact of a historically significant period for women's rights. unknown books‎

‎Antique Needlepoint Sampler 1815‎

‎Girls' Education Original vintage cross-stitch sampler. 1815. 11.5" x 15" in. Alphabet cross-stitched in capital and lower case letters with decorative embroidered border and information on maker stitched at bottom: "Mary Ruffle October 25 1815 Aged 9". Samplers were valuable parts of girls' education from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries as it demonstrated both their skill in needlepoint and their achievements in literacy. From the 1800s the very first schools and academies for young women in America had their students create needlepoint pieces with decorative motifs such as verses or the entire alphabet being stitched on the sampler. The parents of these young women proudly displayed their embroideries as showpieces of their daughter's talent and status. In recent years these samplers have become important in museum collections as representations of early American female education. Alphabet "&" numbers 1 through 8 and motif of trees vines flowers and a crown in navy orange pink dark green brown and white thread. C. Toned. Few threads frayed. Very good. unknown books‎

All the women wear hijabs and have powerful expressions on their faces. Behind the cart is a classic Arab door frame with Arabic or Egyptian motifs. The bottom of the photo reads in gold lettering "2187. P.Z. - Kairo. Charrette Transportant des Femmes Arabes." Overall a very attractive and sharp image. In very good condition overall with some minor imperfections. unknown books‎

‎Women midwives‎

‎Four 18th century decrees for Mainz School of Midwifery‎

‎Childbirth Midwives were responsible for the safe delivery of the foetus. Their work could be a steady and chosen occupation. Initially there was no formal training or the need to obtain a license but this changed within Europe in the 1700's since some town authorities recognized the need for trained midwives in order to protect the safety of the public. In contrast to the 'norm' of the 15th and 16th centuries midwives were women concerned with public affairs since they were employed by the municipal authorities and were entitled to a salary. They were also paid by their private clients. Hence in a male oriented society midwives -who came from the lower middle class were called to challenge gender divisions.

Four decrees printed in German block lettering related to the Mainz School of Midwifery from 1784-1785. 5 sheets 12 ½ x 7 ½ in. Decrees relate to registration exam protocols and professor approbation's issued by Baron von Frankenstein. Documents contain handwritten notes at bottom. Light scattered foxing and thumb-soiling. Horizontal crease in all sheets. Very good condition. unknown books‎
