Eleni is representative of a generation of immigrant women who were, in effect, ghettoized. Their ethnicity was preserved and isolated without the ameliorating effects of growth and sharing in a land of strong multicultural roots and traditions. Alexander takes these materials, which might have constituted only another book about the immigrant experience, and fashions a deeply moving and subtle tale of one womans odyssey towards articulation and light. Tirage limité à 430 exemplaires numérotés, celui-ci 1/30 sur papier Vidalon (tirage de tête), enrichi d’une suite des illustrations sur Chine. Dernier livre de Jean Voilier (pseudonyme littéraire de l'éditrice Jeanne Loviton), ce roman, qui débute au moment où les citadins ont quitté leur ville avant l'entrée de l'armée ennemie, a pour personnage principal un improbable pochard qui divague dans les rues de la ville abandonnée. Valéry travailla longtemps à l'illustration du livre qu'il dessina et grava dans l'atelier de Daragnès. Jean Voilier (1903-1996) reste une personnalité fascinante et mystérieuse, pas follement sympathique, de l'édition française et certains lui prêtent un rôle dans la mort, non élucidée, de l'éditeur Robert Denoël. Très rare en tirage de tête.‎
