‎Drawing of Grapes awarded 1st prize for the year 1829 from the French drawing school "cole Royalle et Gratuite de Dessin pour les Jeunes Personnes"‎

‎1829. An intricate drawing of a bunch of grapes a survival from the Age of Enlightenment in France first prize in the annual competition given to a young woman by one of the women who ran the school. Free drawing schools were established in France from the 1740s onward with the aim of training and supporting poor children. The painter Ferrand de Monthelon was concerned about idleness of children after leaving school age 10 and before beginning apprenticeship age 15. The schools were supported by charitable donations and aimed to form the sound basis for further training in a dizzying list of trades. One of the most prominent free drawing schools was established in Paris by the painter Jean-Jacques Bachelier former artistic director of the royal porcelain manufacture at Sevres in 1766. Called "Ecole royale gratuite de dessin" it was initially only open to men. Bachelier was critical of the Guilds apprenticeship training as expensive and uninspiring. It continues today as "cole nationale superieur des arts decoratifs". This drawing is a survival from another school that also trained women run by women. According to the "Almanach Royal et National pour l'An 1839" this school was directed by two sisters the Misses Frre de Montizon for young people destined to working in the arts and industrial professions. They were instructed in drawing & lithography. There was an annual prize awarded and honorable mentions instituted in 1828 the year before this drawing was done. The judges were the "Membres de la Commission de surveillance" and the artwork was publicly exhibited. The drawing is signed by Mlle Justine Frre de Montizon M. David and M. Garnier the judges & members of the "Commission". Inscribed "cole royalle et gratuite de dessin pour les jeunes personnes / concours pour les prix de l'an 1829 ce 27 juillet. Mlle. T. Frre de Montizon professeur. Premier Acuellir dserv a Mlle. Flore Lcoufler le 30 Septre.1829. Par le Membres de la Commission de Surveillance. Par les Membres de la Commission de Surveillance / Garnier President Membres de l'Institute / David Membres de l'Institut". Exquisite pencil drawing approx. 6 x 9" on paper 9 1/4 x 12 3/4". Manuscript inscriptions beneath the drawing. Small pinholes in the lower left corner perhaps where the award was first pinned on exhibition. In remarkable condition. A rare survival and an accomplished drawing. De Munck Bert Steven L. Kaplan Hugo Soly edit. "Learning on the Shop Floor: Historical Perspectives on Apprenticeship" 2007.

unknown‎

‎Women; Equal Pay‎

‎McClure vs. the Salvation Army. Supreme Court of the United States Case No. 72-134‎

‎New York 1972. Hardcover. Very good condition. Personal copy of the inside documents which won the sex discrimination case in favor of the Salvation Army belonging to William J. Moss 1921 - 2005 partner at Cadwalader Wickersham and Taft and valued advisor to The Salvation Army. The McClure case was a leading case for establishing the doctrine of "ministerial exception" having settled the law upon all points involved in such case in 1964. This is the private record of newspaper articles motions filed complaints opinion and orders and briefs concerning the important 1972 sex discrimination suit brought against the Salvation Army by a female plaintiff who sued the organization for receiving lower pay as a female employee than her male counterparts. Billie B. McClure served as a Salvation Army officer the equivalent of an ordained minister; after complaining that male officers were receiving higher salaries and better benefits than females she was fired. The case was pursued all the way to the Supreme Court with the decision rendered in the favor of the Salvation Army with the stipulation that as a religious institution the Salvation Army was not subject to the equal employment requirements as established in Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The doctrine announced in McClure became known as the "ministerial exception" and in the years since the ruling nearly all of the nation's federal appeals courts have embraced it. The record is a presentation copy from Harry Lamon to William Moss partner Cadwalader Wickersham and Taft New York. Presentation inscription at ffe thanking Moss for his "wise counsel" in the McClure case; signed Harry Lamon dated 5/15/73. Lamon was an Atlanta attorney for the Salvation Army. ‎Women; Suffrage; Victoria Woodhull & Emily Faithful‎

‎'The Anvil'. Woman's Rights article in Dartmouth College newspaper‎

‎Hanover NH: Dartmouth Press 1873. Vol. I No. 1. Good overall. First issue of the Dartmouth newspaper which ran for only the year 1873-1874 with an article supporting women's suffrage but attacking Victoria Woodhull titled "A Hindrance and a Snare" accompanied with 2 additional numbers No's. 12 & 19. There is also an article about suffragette Emily Faithful. The editor argues in favor of the notion that "women may soon be allowed to go to the ballot box without being arrested and imprisoned therefor" and reasons that the movement and change should be "allowed to grow" rather than "to thrust it prematurely upon an unwilling people". This change by the way took another 46 before the constitutional amendment extending the right of suffrage to women was approved. Next however the editor quickly moves on to single out and attack Victoria Woodhull a leader of the American women's suffrage movement who had just run for president as the candidate for the Equal Rights Party. 'The Anvil' denies that Woodhull is a leader of the movement states that she "sounded her own trumpet" has no followers that she is "her own worst enemy" and "a garrulous bundle of absurdities". Woodhull is viciously badmouthed and called irrelevant: "It is certainly a little singular that so slight a snag can entangle so large a ship. We do not anticipate that this woman will serve as any permanent barrier to the progress of the suffrage movement ." Woodhull is dismissed as insane: "We do not regard her as responsible for her own actions" and is compared to Mrs. Sherman "the murderess". Lydia Sherman was a serial killer who poisoned 3 husbands and 8 children 6 of whom were her own. Vol. I No. 1 p5. Interestingly the very next article is one praising Miss Emily Faithful sic an English women's rights activist and publisher and her "hearty reception on this side of the water". ."she has won the hearts of all classes in England and . gained for herself many friends among the best people in America". A New York reception held by the city's working women for Faithfull is recorded. Emily Faithfull 1835 - 1895 established a female run printing press The Victoria Press which published the feminist 'English Woman's Journal 1860-1866. Many newspaper readers and editors of the day were offended by Woodhull's 1872 publishing of a graphic account in her paper 'Woodhull & Claflin's Weekly' of the alleged adulterous affair of Henry Ward Beecher with parishioner Elizabeth Tilton which had resulted in Woodhull's arrest on obscenity charges. Woodhull reported on this well known and nationally covered scandal as part of her campaign against society's acceptance of influential married men having mistresses on the side. She was duly punished for it. 'The Anvil' was the personal venture of a talented graduate of Dartmouth 1873 Fred A. Thayer. with Vol. I Number 12 April 24 1873 and Vol. I Number 19 June 12 1873. 4to 9 3/4 x 12 1/2" partially unopened copies. Vol. I chipped at edges cover detached Vols 12 & 19 very good condition. ‎WOMEN; WORLD WAR II.‎

‎Original manuscript notebook.‎

‎Ramsgate: April 1942 - March 1943. Unique manuscript account of the friendship and exploits of six young women during the Second World War Small quarto pp. 70 230 x 180 mm. Commercial lined notebook of green cloth-backed paper-covered boards green endpapers 31 pages neatly written in English in black ink 4 pages in green ink "Teddy Bears Picnic" song typed on blue paper and pasted in poster drawn in blue red and black paint tipped-in to rear pastedown. Illustrated with original ink and watercolour drawings 10 of which are full-page. A little wear to spine ends front hinge tender split to lower part of gutter at first page unused final pages neatly excised. In very good condition. A poignant manuscript notebook amusingly illustrated recording the friendship and lively exploits of a group of six young women from Ramsgate during the Second World War. The group who named themselves "the Order of Little Bears" consisted of Maud Isabella Milgate the primary author of this manuscript her sister Blanche Adelaide Milgate "Bibs" and their friends Rose Anne James Margaret Hessie Vince "Meg" Elsie May Smith "Smut" and Dorothy Eccleston Back "Pat" who drew the illustrations. The notebook covers the creation of the "Order" and how they created entertainment for themselves against the constant backdrop of the war bombing raids and their work. Opening on 7 April 1942 at Easter the six head out for their first picnic of the year on Easter Monday: "we viewed with horror the devastation caused by the bombs on Sturry and were glad to take ourselves up into the woods". Rose a teacher is based in Stafford for most of the year where she finds life very dull and relies on the girls for most of her amusement. The Milgate sisters work in a shop owned by the father their mother died two years prior in 1940. Smut leaves Ramsgate to train with the WAAF from which she returns on leave intermittently and the girls throw her a farewell party at which they get rather merry: in the centre of the table was a "glass bowl. in which floated two pink roses. Pat insisted on giving these roses frequent drops of wine. She said she was toasting Rose who was of course in Stafford". Two of them are reprimanded by policeman on their way home from one of their "binges" who sternly "informed them that singing in the street after 10.30pm is not allowed ladies!" In the summer of 1942 the four remaining in Ramsgate acquire an allotment: "this walled in garden gave us sunny recreation among sylvan surroundings and sea breezes. I did not care whether the allotment grew potatoes or dandelions". The girls go to visit Smut who is rather miserable in her WAAF posting to take her for a river outing and do some country dancing in the lanes while waiting for her: "not even life in a bombed town. can damp the vivid life in some people especially if those people happen to be little bears and to see those four dancing in the middle of the road that glorious summer day in August is something I shall not soon forget. the scene was more reminiscent of Merrie England than of bomb shattered Britain". On their return to the station the girls get drenched in a sudden shower and hang their wet clothes from the luggage rack to dry "the compartment soon looked like a gipsy encampment so much so that a man attempting to enter our carriage at a wayside station gave one look at our wet belongings exclaimed 'Good Lord!' and shut the door again quickly!". Towards the end of the summer they celebrate Rose's homecoming after she is recalled to Ramsgate to teach at the local school and Maud's birthday "however the company had hangovers the next morning and drank tea and smoked cigarettes while lolling on my bed in an attempt to pull themselves together". Rose clears up her bombed-out house in Ramsgate and the "Bears" hold a house-warming party for her new home - Rose adds to the notebook an amusing account in verse of the raucous evening. Smut has her confirmation on 17 December 1942 by the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr William Temple: "not even the wailing of the siren nor the broken bomb shattered window above the quiet altar could destroy the illusion of peace that age-old ceremony inspired. two things he said remain in my mind. One was that one of God's best gifts was friendship and we were not sufficiently thankful to God for our friends"; a news clipping about the Archbishop's visit is pasted in. The year concludes with the staging of a Little Bears Variety Show in their local church hall at Holy Trinity on 18 December worked up from a number of items that "we had done for our own amusement to keep our minds off raids": the girls sang performed skits and played the violin piano mandolin and accordion. A hand-drawn poster for the night is included at the rear of the notebook and a newspaper clipping on the evening is pasted in. Pat's brother Wilfred is reported killed just before Christmas in Libya and Maud writes that "such however was Mrs Back's fortitude that she did not allow her personal grief to intrude upon the pleasures of Christmas". The account finishes at March 1943 with a brief report on the first part of the year. Loosely inserted is a sheet of paper in manuscript proposing the creation of associates of the "Order" 13 months after its creation. Ramsgate: hardcover‎

‎258 p. + Plus lovely mezotint style portrait, engraved by R. Rawdon after the painting by William Doyle. Damp stained. Foxed. Small 12mo. Worn original leather backed boards. Early (Pennsylvania?) manuscript ownerships of Mary S. Grubb and Mrs. Albert E. Landis. Called the Eighth Edition on the title page. On the half-title is a notice, printed in black letter, not frequently mentioned in descriptions of this edition: "The Profits of this Work are devoted to the Support of the Foreign Mission from America." Harriet Newell made the passage to India from America as a young wife and missionary in 1812 at the age of 19. She and her husband arrived in Calcutta in late June, but reembarked for France that October. On the voyage a daughter was born but died within a week. Harriet subsequently fell ill and died in France seven weeks later. The majority of the text is taken from Harriet's often high spirited letters and journals. She describes the ocean voyage in detail. Leonard Woods was among the founders of the American Tract Society in 1814 and American Temperance Society in 1826. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PA 55‎
