‎Davis, Natalie Zemon‎

‎Women on the margins : three seventeenth-century lives‎

‎Black glossy illustrated dj with archival mylar sleeve and burgundy cloth boards; 360 pages, 28 unnumbered pages of plates : b&w illustrations, maps ; 24 cm; bibliographical references (pages 219-339) and index. "As she did with Martin Guerre, Natalie Zemon Davis here retrieves individual lives from historical obscurity to give us a window onto the early modern world. As women living in the seventeenth century, Glikl bas Judah Leib, Marie de l'Incarnation, and Maria Sibylla Merian, equally remarkable though very different, were not queens or noblewomen, their every move publicly noted. Rather, they were living "on the margins" in seventeenth-century Europe, North America, and South America. Yet these women - one Jewish, one Catholic, one Protestant - left behind memoirs and writings that make for a spellbinding tale and that, in Davis' deft narrative, tell us more about the life of early modern Europe than many an official history. All these women were originally city folk. Glikl bas Judah Leib was a merchant of Hamburg and Metz whose Yiddish autobiography blends folktales with anecdotes about her two marriages, her twelve children, and her business. Marie de L'Incarnation, widowed young, became a mystic visionary among the Ursuline sisters and cofounder of the first Christian school for Amerindian women in North America. Maria Sibylla Merian, a German painter and naturalist, produced an innovative work on tropical insects based on lore she gathered from the Carib, Arawak, and African women of Suriname. The resulting triptych suggests the range of experience, self-consciousness, and expression possible in seventeenth-century Europe and its outposts. It also shows how persons removed from the centers of power and learning ventured in novel directions, modifying in their own way Europe's troubled and ambivalent relations with other "marginal" peoples." óPublisher.‎

Two years after the Great Earthquake that destroyed San Francisco and a year after the bitter misunderstanding that almost destroyed their budding romance Fremont Jones and Michael Archer are back in the City by the Bay this time committed to being "partners in life and work." Their life is shared as equals and their work is the private investigations agency they have opened together but--not surprisingly where Fremont is concerned--it's sometimes difficult to separate the two.

In fact it's her friendship with a slightly flighty pretty and troubled young woman that gets Fremont involved in her first murder investigation. Then two mediums are murdered Frances begins to discover her own talent for telepathy and takes a lover and Fremont becomes dangerously embroiled in her friend's illicit liaison.

While Fremont hones her investigative skills she also comes to a new appreciation of Michael's professional talents and his other special qualities as well. As in her three earlier mysteries Dianne Day provides "foggy period atmosphere a dash of dangerous romance" Minneapolis Star Tribune and a twisty new adventure for her intrepid sleuth.

Dianne Day spent her early years in the Mississippi Delta before moving to the San Francisco Bay area. Fremont Jones has appeared in three previous mysteries: The Strange Files of Fremont Jones which won the Macavity Award for Best First Novel and two bestselling sequels--Fire and Fog and The Bohemian Murders. Day who now lives in San Francisco is at work on her fifth Fremont Jones mystery Death Train to Boston. .

‎Of Love and Wars‎

‎New York: Stein and Day Publishers 1984. First edition. Hardcover. Good/fair. Red and black hardcover 1st edition in dustjacket. Signed and inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Ruth Carter with very best wishes from the author Theresa De Kerpely. Nov. 1984." A fair to good copy with heavy wear at the board edges and some soiling to the text block edges. Pages are clean and unmarked and the binding is solid but lacking in tightness as if read and handled extensively. The dustjacket is fair only with many chips and tears at all edges some of which have been repaired with scotch tape and a damp stain to the top of the rear panel spineward. Unfortunate condition for a riveting autobiography detailing the author's survival of both World Wars.

Stein and Day Publishers hardcover‎
